Persona

Which is the best starting point for the Persona series, should I start with the first game, or should I skip any of them?

3 then 4 then 5, then 2 if you really want more
you can skip 1

You could start at which one you want but 3-4-5 is recommended.
1 and 2 are basically SMT Lite.

Shin Megami Tensei for the Super Famicom.

Don't listen to the people who tell you to play 3, you have no control over your party unless you are playing the VN PSP version, which isn't complete since it doesn't have the extra story The Answer from P3 FES.

Start with 4 and then play whatever you want knowing the past games are never going to be as good

1 and 2 are pretty damn different gameplay wise from 3 onward.

3 onward is when it became popular again, so I'd star there honestly. As much love as I have for the first two they're not exactly easy to get into these days.

I'm tempted to say 5 just because of how pretty much everything about the game is head and shoulders above anything else in the series, but I have a feeling if someone plays it first they will have trouble enjoying any of the others.

This. The order isn't too important but this way is best cos playing 3 after 4 or 5 makes its gameplay flaws stand out more.

How much of a fucking casual are you? Do you like RPGs or do you want a comfy meme game?

3 4 and 5.
3 I'd actually recommend the psp version just for the direct control option , then play the answer from the FES version .

P4 play Golden.

And p5 is p5 .

2 and 1 are good but they aren't really what persona is today

>Telling someone to actually suffer through The Answer.
>Telling someone to play Golden when all the changes just make the game easier or shot on the story.
Shut the fuck up.

Play 1 if you want a proper MegaTen game with more down-to-earth themes. It has an interesting story and cool dungeons, but play it on an emulator with speed up or you'll hate yourself. Avoid the NTSC PS1 version, it was butchered to the core.
2 is like 1 but with better story/characters and different (definitely easier and not as slow, but not really better in my opinion) gameplay. Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are separate halves of one story, EP being a sequel to IS.
3 and 4 are the current face of Persona, with the former having better story and characters (in my opinion) while the latter has less fucky gameplay. Neither have particularly interesting gameplay though, and are mostly just VNs with a sub-par dungeon crawling aspect. Avoid the PSP version of 3, though the Vita version of 4 is an improvement unless undubbing is important to you (which it may well be, the English dubs have spoken honorifics which triggers the fuck out of me, not to mention all the usual jank associated with being a localized Japanese game)
5 takes the structure of the previous two games and improves it greatly, having some actually good dungeon crawling along with the VN stuff.

Fuck Persona 4, that game is a complete shit stain. Shitty story and characters, absolutely garbage straight hallways dungeons with dumbed down gameplay from Persona 3, which was also already dumbed down SMT gameplay. Anyone that seriously recommends P4 is a waifu fag with the absolute worst taste

>Sup Forums tells me to start with P3
>go for it
>smooth sailing for the first month
>then this fucking thing blocks my path
Jesus christ what

Catherine.

Hit it until it dies.

Not him but do you have control over what skills are carried over in Persona 3 FES/portable? Remember playing the first 3 when I preordered it and I just had to quit because I just got too annoyed at that shit.

The Answer is not worth playing as 90% of it is just grinding.

You can chose what skills in portable but not FES

Guess I'm going to be playing portable. Also remember them having annoying AI but I'm guessing they let me have direct control in portable as well.

Correct again this is only in portable not in FES

Is there any good reason to play FES over portable?

Funny when I did preorder Persona 3 I had no idea how anything worked. So when it told me that sport club was open I just shrugged it off and through "why the fuck would I do that I have more dungeon exploring to do!" and missed pretty much 90% of the game and by the time I reached I think the 2nd or 3rd boss I had to quit because I was so fucking screwed.

I'm guessing you haven't encountered death

Other than the answer not really although FES looks considerably better then portable

W-wait, death?

Only works until it oneshots half the party.

Hit it harder then. World of STR.

Basically if you stay on a floor for too long (or something like that) then an enemy called death will attack you he's strong but is beatable by the end game

>We will never get a remake of SMT Nocturne where we have more control over abilities of demons/angels and can pick which abilities we want to equip like DDS
Nocturne might be my favorite Atlus game but I honestly can never got back because of how annoying everything is about that game.

P3p has way worse graphics, MC can only use swords instead of every weapon, took out fusion skills, uses p4's style of content, and doesn't let you explore the town.

FES lets you choose any weapon type, has a fully modeled overworld and lets you use the dual Persona attacks, which can only be used with items in Portable. My recommendation is to play FES first and play Portable on replays.

Seem like it's a weird mixture of good and bad. Seem weird they will do that. And no if I'm going to play it I really don't want to play it once and play it again without NG+. So it's either FES or portable and seem while there's a bit of annoying shit I might just go with portable.

I hate how you equip skills in DDS and if they did remake Nocturne, I would just be upset that they're remaking it, which is still fine as is, of the most part, instead of SMT1 or 2 which would actually benefit greatly from a remake, which is pretty much my thoughts on Deep Strange Journey. The only thing that really keeps me form wanting to replay Nocturne is fucking Puzzle Boy.

I just hate how you had to keep canceling fusing and trying again over and over again hoping to get the right skills to carry over. As for equipping skills it's more that I hate the idea of losing skills without any way of getting it back. Hell if you want just have it so that you can only do it at the large save points instead of any time. Personally it's just that Nocturne has way too many annoyances that I just can never really go back to even when I love it so fucking much.

Start at P3, play the FES version. Then P4, go with standard. Then P5. It'll help show you how the gameplay has evolved and you won't be weak like these people here telling you P4 is any good because 'muh comfy game'.

When it comes too persona the only corrrect move is too never play them at all.

There's no reason to play the PS2 version of Persona 4 over Golden. Unlike Persona 3 which which each version has it's own weird benefits Persona 4 Golden is literally Persona 4 just with more stuff.

>Not want to see Fuhrer in all his glory

>Only official translation is on an iOS port of the GBA version
Nah.

Cancelling fusing to get the right skills is a pain, but I'm typically okay with having imperfect demons so I never have to spend too long on it. Being able to re-use old skills is fine for DDS because you're playing with a five person party, but for Nocturne where you're always switching out your demons, I feel like it would make the game far too easy and discourage fusion.

That and how the demons love to go "hey I want to change this skill" without telling me what it will change to which leads to more of me just getting even more annoying. I to am fine with not a perfect fusion but it really does make me not want to deal with dumb shit like that. As for having more control over your skills is that it leads to too many times you are just going to try to look up a guide on skills and not really try them all out since you are going to completely lose a skill permanently which is pretty bullshit.

>no reason

You mean besides having to buy a Vita/PS TV, overpriced memory card and the game?

Surely this will work.

Spooky. I got a card that said something like "Death looms", but nothing came of it.

I just used demons to test out skills I wasn't sure of and a lot of the ones the Demifiend gets that are exclusive to him are obviously the best. The only exceptions is whether Gaea Rage or the one with the high crit rate is better, but even then, you're not going to be at a serious disadvantage regardless of your choice. Stuff like Freikugel is clearly the best you can get.

You probably summed death but went up a floor before you encountered him

While I agree with you I do feel like you really should have the option of regaining those skills in some way. Permanent lost really is a dumb idea in general personally. And if you are playing blind it can honestly fuck you up if you have no idea what you are doing and just trying things out. I'm not trying to say Nocturne is bad since it really is my favorite Atlus game. I just feel that with all the improvements they did with fusing it really is something that's hard to go back to the moment you start to really fuse demons.

Start with Persona 3, playing after P4 and P5 will feel shitty, it's not as good but pretty good.
Skip P1 and P2 for now, play P4 or P5.
After those, You will have to decide if you are fat enough to dive in the rest of the series. If you are, P2 and then P1. If you are even fatter after that, you can dive into the Shin Megami Tensei series forever and argue with me afterwards how my help is retarded and I should kill myself and P3 is better than P4. If you do, then fuck you I hope you kys.

depends on if you're a waifufag/casual or if you actually like games

just follow this simple guide:

youtube.com/watch?v=seNMCgcc0Kw

Tyrone was in the right, Louisa Ferre a shit.

So is Persona's gameplay good enough to play it for that alone?

I like turn-based games.

Better than most turn based imo, but if you don't like the over-in-one-turn nature of random mob fights it might bother you. That being said bosses are usually very enjoyable.

The SMT series has a good gameplay gimmick. Plus like nobody does turn based anymore, so your options are limited

>1 and 5
Yes
>2 3 and 4
No

It's certainly not the most amazing combat I've ever seen in a turn based game, but it's fun enough that I was still having fun just fighting generic enemies by the end of the game in 5. 3 and 4 become complete slogs by the end and I haven't played the first two.

If you're really interest in just having some good turn based combat, I'd recommend Nocturne. Persona is great, but Nocturne has better combat. Digital Devil Saga has great combat too, but it's not as good as Nocturne's in my opinion due to a few small changes.

How do I know if I'm fucking myself over/getting into an unwinnable state with my choices in P3?

If you can beat the Tartarus bosses and get to the lock that happens each month you are doing fine.
