Tales of

>Zestiria gets a bad rep
>the game is genuinely fun with a good cast of characters that will make you chuckle more often than not

I can see why people hate it because the story is just meh when compared to older titles, but I think the ending was a refresher from the typical "Hero lives happily ever after" bullshit. The ending felt bittersweet.

How did you feel about Zestiria?

As someone who started and ended the series with this game, it was boring and unfun

All of the characters were bland or unlikeable.

The story was utterly forgettable.

The combat was the most mashy it's ever been, and was just really boring.

The exploration was non-existant.

It's marginally better than Innocence, which is my least favourite game.

That's a damn shame, Tales of games have an underwhelming budgets when compared to other franchised JRPG series, but usually their combat and story make up greatly for it. Have you considered trying out any older titles? Eternia is my all my time favorite with Berseria a close second.

>Can't multiplayer properly

Games bad.

The characters, I found, were a lot better when compared to Xillia's cast where I can't even name the characters apart from Jude and Milla. Meebo was a complete bro who wanted to go adventuring with Sorrey, Sorrey was your typical Tales of protagonist who wants to save the world, Rose was a tomboy (that makes up for her shortcomings) and Zaveid was just all around bro. Edna and Leilah were underwhelming yeah, but Leilah was genuinely fun at times

I simply dont have enough time to play games anymore to give second chances. I play maybe 2 hours a week now

>The exploration was non-existant.

as opposed to what? every tales game before this was just hallway and corridor with the overworld, you could never explore in tales of games.

Most newer Tales games are going with bittersweet ends.

The game had severe camera issues, the equipment upgrade system was a grindfest to use properly, battles were spammier than ever (Armatize + spell spam), and multiplayer was gutted past 2 players because of battle mechanics.

>Most newer Tales games are going with bittersweet ends.

pretty sure it's only because Zestiria was originally planned to be a trilogy of games. I don't know if they still plan on releasing the third installment, but we'll find out at Tales fest in a few months.

I haven't played any Tales game yet but I'm planning to try it out soon. Where should I start? Is this game like a turn-based game?

I would honestly prefer if they left the zesty/berseria universe in the next game. The endings hold well enough on their own, and berseria as a prequel did just fine in expanding the universe while working seamlessly into the end result that is zestiria.

>Is this game like a turn-based game?

It's more action rpg esque, if you want to start with a Tales game your best entry is Berseria. Zestiria has a bad reps for some of the reasons that anons in this thread pointed out, but Berseria seems to be well loved thus far.

Just play Berseria since it's the best one in a while- and if you enjoy the gameplay and character banter then work your way back while at least hitting the popular titles.

Personally I feel the same way, but Japs love their happy endings in video games so we'll see. I just hope the next tales game has a similiar cast to Berseria, I can't remember the last tales game I played that made me love the characters like Berseria did.

As opposed to actually having treasure worth finding.

It's a trend in new tales games to just put fucking consumables in chests.

Fuck off, even Symphonia and games around that time period had weapons and shit in chests. It wasn't just buy your next weapon at the next shop, it felt like you might find something good by looking around. Now it's almost like you're penalized for exploring.

Fucking Abyss with its Sword Dancer was amazing, had to search him out to get one of Luke's best weapons, and certainly one of his best looking weapons.

>game has multiple party members
>all but two of them are basically gimmicks thanks to the elemental and fusion systems and are not worth even trying to control yourself

Thank you for the insights. Beseria it is then, I hope I will enjoy the series.

I was severely disappointed with it
Everything felt restrained in terms of how characters could react to situations, how gameplay was dumbed down to death, how the equipment system is dumb even when you get how it works
The charcters felt a little forced like "we are your new favorite characters, look how fun we are and how happy we are as a party" it didn't feel natural at all
The lack of content in the game and the clear underhandedness of Scamco trying to make everything dlc to make even more money for a half ass game like Zestiria pained me for I genuinely really like the series

I'm just gonna hope Tales festival in june can deliver something fresh and new to clean the terrible taste out of my mouth that was Zestiria

>weapons in chests is why I didn't like this game

but if you actually explored some of the dungeons you would have gotten weapons from chests, not a lot but a good deal of them drop shit for Sorrey.

Plus, some of the mid boss monsters also dropped equipment for your party members if you managed to kill them on normal or higher

This.

I liked how in Symphonia/Abyss you had to solve mini-puzzles to go around or get chests. new Tales games just feel like go from A to B, and don't you dare to fight the lord of Calamity early :^)

>The lack of content in the game and the clear underhandedness of Scamco trying to make everything dlc to make even more money for a half ass game like Zestiria pained me for I genuinely really like the series

to be totally fair, the reason for it wasn't namco but fucking Baba being producer for the game. Half the world felt like they were planning to put something there, and then scrapped it last minute to maybe release it as DLC. The ruined city for example was supposed to be destroyed during the course of the game and the reaper to be a mid game boss for you to fight, but instead they made it into a shitty little sidequest.

So, this is coming from a longtime fan of the series.

None of the new games have been particularly amazing, to me. I'm not saying don't play them, but I do suggest giving older titles a chance if you end up not liking the new ones.

There seem to be big divides in the fanbase; some really like the new ones, some like the middle titles, and some are fond of the early ones.

Prior to Xillia (which I'll say is the start of the "new" games), there were 2 teams, distinguished by the main artists, or the games they're credited with. Team Destiny (Inomata) and Symphonia (Fujishima).

I'm personally a big fan of team Symphonia. I suggest trying Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia. In my opinion, Symphonia is a good bit worse than the other two for a few reasons (combat is good, but you can tell it's a middlepoint between full 3D combat, and 2D combat, in a bad way), but it'll also be difficult to play it after playing newer titles.

Vesperia is my favourite in the series.

Sound like you're talking about xillia

Right, I was using that as an example, it's one of the things that makes me quite disappointed in the newer games.

Why are dungeons just fucking corridors with nothing? Not even the semblance of a puzzle. Symphonia didn't always have good puzzles, but at least it had a shitload of them. Abyss too.

Who the fuck wants a corridor of a dungeon, without anything even worth looking for?

The newer games feel like on-rails adventures, with areas just as excuses for you to encounter monster fights.

In the old ones, fights were a focus, but the areas weren't fucking devoid of life or reason.

>Vesperia is my favourite in the series.

the art in vesperia was on point, the story was really good but the one flaw I can find with Vesperia was that the story was too short. I think I beat the game my first time around in 25 or 30 hours. Symphonia is a fantastic place to start, the story itself is 40 hours long, with twists and turns all over the place. My biggest advice to you is to NOT spoil yourself if you choose symphonia.

Well, I'm really talking about all the games after Vesperia.

I haven't been a fan of any of the new ones, though granted I haven't played Xillia 2. Mostly because Xillia made me want to fall asleep, and Graces f made me want to kill myself to mitigate the loss of 60 hours.

I should have stopped fucking playing that game so much earlier, rather than sitting through it, hoping it would get good.

I really blame that on Baba than anything else, ever since he became producer of Tales the series has really went on a downhill spiral that recently came up with Berseria. But Berseria's small size is more to do with the fact that it's funding was peanuts when compared to other titles.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hideo_Baba

seriously every Tales game that he's worked on past 2009 has been absolute garbage

Yet you spend more than 2 hours on Sup Forums :^)

Whatever the change to Baba's title meant to the Tales series appears to be a good thing because Berseria instantly rebounded after Zestiria fallout and his removal as game producer.

Yup, ever since Zestiria's shitty reception Baba was demoted to a strawman position, and after Berseria launched he left to go work at Square. So whoever the new producer is, I'd say Tales is in good hands.

Fuck yeah Gurumin.
