I've never got it. Sure she suffers a bit in ME3 but a lot of characters did. Thought her attitudes on religion, other alien races and duty were always interesting to listen to and I ended up romancing her across the trilogy in the end. Garrus was bland in ME1, it was a cool idea having your dialogue choices affect his morality but when you learn latter it all means jack shit and he goes renegade no matter what it pretty much ruins him because he had nothing else in ME1

Why didn't they just explain that the reapers were running experiments, creating new troops for the oncoming invasion and humans on the fringe of the galaxy were just a convenient source?

They explained earlier that Collectors often traded with slavers. Would've made sense that they were preparing troops for the Reapers long before their scheduled invasion and the last 6 months or so was basically just over time to meet demand now that they had to fight a conventional war when Sovereign failed.

Would've played into ME3 pretty well, explaining all the new enemy types and showing that the Reapers weren't some mystical invincible force, just a powerful foe who was always a step ahead of the galactic species until the events of ME1 threw their plans into disarray. Making the war in ME3 feel alot more believable

Because Reapers are made from chosen races to preserve that society in synthetic form, the Harvest is the Reapers primary mission. If you listened to Harbinger's banter during battle, you'll hear him discount every race but humans, humanity is the chosen society to ascend to Reaper-hood this Cycle.

The Reaper wasnt finished and that's why it still resembled human form. They were building a Human Reaper there in the first place to replace Sovereign so it could access the Citadel Relay to let the Reapers back into the Galaxy.

Arrival DLC was done after the main writers quit the project. That was the point where things started sliding and the retcons began. Before Arrival it was established that the Relays were indestructible, not even a Supernova had previously been able to scratch them. It had also been established that the Reapers were way out in Dark Space, too far to make the trip back by FTL travel, which is why opening the Citadel Relay was so damn important.

Then Arrival retconned everything, hey a simple asteroid strike can take out a Relay, hey the Reapers are just a few years away from the outer rim, hey instead of the Mass Effect problem(you know the fucking TITLE of the series) the heart of the plot is about synthetics killing organics to stop synthetics from killing organics...

Arrival is where things got stupid.

But she is also useless and annoying. Garrus and Wrex are the most spacebro characters in the trilogy. They are objectively better characters in nearly every way.
