Think of all of the games they only produced in Japan.

Despite being able to play foreign cartridge games, you can't have another count used simultaneously, so if you want digital content, you need to reset your whole vita (or so I remember) and set it up for the other region, and proceed further.

This means you had to buy two to not deal with all of that.

That was just very sporadic with only a few weeks of sub 8K-9K, according to Famitsu's sales figures, Vita sold around 850K units in 2016, Vita is currently the third most successful platform in japan with a bit more than 5 million units sold, first is 3DS with almost 22 million units, second is PS3 with 10+ million units, then there's the PS4 and Wii U and 360.

Generally, the vita sells about one million units a year, with some occasional spikes.

Haven't played operation abyss yet but moe chronicle is really fun, it's a good game for when you're lying in bed listening to a podcast and you just want to mindlessly grind until you feel sleepy plus the gameplay and graphics are great

Persona is a big reason but there have also been some huge breakthroughs with unlocking PSP and Ps1 emulation in the past few weeks.

Kinda sounds like a waste of money, but I guess you won't have problems if one of your Vita dies for some reason.
The Vita did indeed slow down a few weeks during the Switch launch, however, it's also true no big games came out for it during the launch, and some games that did come out were digital only.

It will probably see a decrease due to the Switch taking the spotlight or get the usual sale spikes once some of the "bigger" titles like God Wars come out, it all depends on how the Switch performs and if Sony decides to do something else than watching paint dry when it comes to the Vita.
If they slash prices chances are they'll get a hefty boost in sales for instance, but Sony is lead by a bunch of imbeciles so I doubt they'll do that anyway, there's also the rumours about a new handheld in the works but those are just rumours that don't really reflect Sony's official stance on handhelds right now.

Of course, one must keep in mind that JP third parties at large aren't really on the Switch hypetrain for now, so it's possible Vita will get some surprise releases while JP devs gauge the Switch and its market by porting some Vita or mobile stuff like they're currently doing, Vita is still the console with the highest attachment rate in the market so far, so devs aren't really willing to leave it yet when the Vita prints money for them.
Depends on the titles, some do sell better on PS4, others sell better on 3, others sell better on Vita, the total physical sales tend to be in favor of PS3 though, I don't know about digitals.

So far, the PS tripple is undeniably the main home console in the market, by a long shot, the PS quadrupple has around 3.2 million units, which is pretty much the same exact number of Wii Us around, but the Wii U is as dead as the 360 and the Xbone is a wet fart in Japanland, it didn't even sell one million units.
