Are you guys retarded? 3 divided by 1/3 equals 9, not 1. That would be multiplication instead.
How do you get 9?
9*[3*(3/1)]+1=1
By having trouble with Bioshock Infinite, duh.
...
Let's kill this shit thread already

OH MY FUCKING LEL
7 8/9
How the fuck do so many people fail at order of operations?
I was a fucking retard at math and even I could easily learn that multiplication comes before addition etc.
SpaceChem
wrong
the real answer is group your equations in a way that isn't fucking ambiguous, OP
Both answers are correct:
Once again a shittily written problem causes incertainty and confusion
9 - ( 3 x 3 ) + 1 = 1
9 - 3:1:3 + 1 = 9 - 1 + 1 = 9

Jesus I got fucked by this idiotic division sign. Nobody ever uses that shit at university anymore so of course I assumed a multiplication
Good one!
I can't remember how to divide fractions
>not even bothering to check them.
Sad
>Both answers are correct:
That's wrong. 3/1/3 = 9
Sorry, got your 5 here. There you go.
Me neither but it's easy in this case because you can think of it as "how many thirds are in 3?"
>people call this ambiguous
god damn it americans are fucking retarded
>both anwers are correct
no you fucking american pig
no wonder the nasa rocket exploded lmao
>ambiguous
are you retarded?
Is this some subtle way to get my credit card number?
No, see 3 divided by 1/3 in this case would be like 3/1 multiplied by 1/3, which would be one. Then you would add both ones together which would be 2, and 9-2 is 7
>Sup Forums could get beaten by a 12 year old when it comes to math, episode 13663
>he didn't learn order of operations in elementary
i was taught to treat fractions as decimals, but you know non repeating
...
it's a convention you fucking retard
Is it 1, or am I being retarded?
Portal 2. Couldn't figure out this one fuckin puzzle for about a week and after pretty much giving up it literally came to me in my sleep. Wasn't even thinking about it.
It's 1
Anybody who intentionally uses inline division instead of fractions should be executed via firing squad.
By convention: 9 - 3/(1/3) +1 = 9 -
9 + 1 = 1
It's 1, because when you divide by a fraction it's the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.
3 / ⅓ = 3 * 3
The problem is that there's no parentheses around 1/3.
It's a matter of interpretation, at that point. The "correct" way to interpret it would be as a fraction, but it's completely valid to think that it could also mean 3 divided by 1 divided by 3, which would be 1
This. Shit is useless
...
>but it's completely valid to think that it could also mean 3 divided by 1 divided by 3, which would be 1
that's not valid at all, the 1 is OVER the 3, making it a fraction
fractions are self contained, thus the parentheses are implicit when writing it out as (1/3)
In the original problem, because you can multiply a reciprocal to achieve the same effect as division, you can simply reverse the fractional expression
...
Technically, 1/3 just means 1÷3. Nothing about the problem told you to divide 1 by 3 FIRST, therefor order of operations says to do all operations of the same type in linear order, so 9 is also acceptable
check my 1
>spend hours thinking to complete it?
Persona 4. I got to the last dungeon and as soon as the song started playing I stopped playing. I didn't want the game to end. It took me days to start to actually finish the game
check this 1
3 divided by 1 equals? 3
3 divided by 3 equals? 1
Eat shit you stupid mother fucker. Go to school and learn how to format your fucking equations instead of shitposting on Sup Forums
...
Because the problem uses division symbols to denote when division is used, it seems pretty implicit that it wasn't an expression of 1 ÷ 3, as the problem would have written it as just that.
$1.9999999999999999999999999999999~
The only correct answer to this is 9. 1 is never correct with the equation written the way it is in the OP.
>Initially thought the answer was 9
>Anons state it's wrong
>Notice that I somehow, in my head, did "3 times 1/3" instead of "3 divided by 1/3"
>Answer is actually 1
I can't read for shit.
Learn to do fractions
I like this thread.
1/3 can be rewritten as 3^-1
9 - 3*3 + 1
= 9 - 9 + 1
= 1
But implication =/= specification
It's because the division sign is never used outside of primary school
how are you supposed to read it? I havent seen a division symbol used since before middleschool alebra.
It's not used for this very reason, its so fucking unclear.
Who died?
Someone didn't go to school for very long. It's called order of operations user, if there are no brackets you work left to right with multiplication/division then left to right with addition/subtraction
>x = 1 + x/2
>x/2 = 1
>x = 2
?
Nothing if I pirate it
Can you guys get this one right?
Is that leaves or kids?
9-3 = 6
6/(1/3) = 18
18+1= 19
The result is 19
the number at the end of this post
Nice
75%
3/(1/3) = 3x3...
1 over 3 means (1/3), not 1/3. Fractions only exist to make this distinction. You can't remove the parenthesis to make your dumbass answer acceptable.
but this isn't ambiguous at all
This dude is right, there is absolutely no way an equation written as such would ever appear in upper mathematics. Hell, I can't even remember the last time I saw an actual division sign like that in a math course. It just isn't used.
Question doesn't make sense.
you multiply them but inverse the second one
It's quicker and easier just to reformat the problem into something standard.
9 - 3÷⅓ + 1 = 9 - 3*3 + 1
It's somewhat moot, because, while this is probably not a good method, I was taught to convert all division into multiplication to streamline everything so there's no confusion.
>0.25*0.25 + 0.25*0.5 + 0 + 0.25*0.25 = 0.25.
excuse me what
you can't just erase the first x and if you move the x/2 over it should become negative
>Both answers are correct
Order of operations. Both answers are not correct.
C.
>1/3 means (1/3) not 1/3
?
>this question
kys
9-9+1=1
Put the question under a box.
Now all answers are right and wrong.
Let me show all my work:
>x = 1 + x/2
>x - x/2 = 1 + x/2 - x/2
>x/2 = 1
>x/2 * 2 = 1 * 2
>x = 2
Suppose you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has a goat. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice?
This one is really old, you should know the answer to this by now
If you can't understand, its because you're retarded. Give up.
>paying for games
I got 19 :3
I pick door number 3.
