The education system in existence today was born out of the Industrial Revolution and the need to teach kids systemised skills that would help make them productive workers.

Since then, however, society has changed in totally unexpected ways and the idea of teaching kids a series of set subjects for six to eight hours a day until they're 16 or 18 is just so pants-on-head retarded and out of date I'm honestly baffled it still exists largely unchanged.

I know this is a shitpost, but it genuinely saddens me to think what effect smartphones are having on school students today. I was lucky that stuff like iphones only really took off towards the end of my education, so my early impressionable years were OK. If there has been one thing I have learned from finishing my masters, is that it's completely worthless to have primary and secondary them as they are.

I used to have parents who beat me up for anything worse than a C and even when I had a B+ (very rarely) it was never enough to appease them. School days were usually around 8-9 hours, which is ridiculous and I found myself daydreaming through most of it anyway or even skipping class entirely. Basically I was a pretty horrible student.

Because I couldn't go to college at that point I went to a vocational school instead, learned a bit about finances and law, which enabled an admission into college. I started to figure out what I really liked to learn about and I was treated like an adult and could make decisions, such as whenever to go to class or not, myself. Companies never cared about what I did prior to college and all that worrying had been completely useless.

In retrospect I think primary and secondary school should be reduced to a maximum of 3-5 hours a day. It should enable children to figure out where their interests lie, rather than overloading them with stress or homework that serves no purpose.

That's what bothered me in primary school as well.
I used to be able to read, write, as well as addition/subtraction/division with numbers from 1 to 100 in kindergarten, simply because I taught it myself with books my parents had.
It was such a pain in the ass to go through primary school, because it was just a place to keep us there for a part-time work day until our parents finished work. In 3rd grade we finally learned addition from 1 to 10. In 4th grade 1 to 20 and division was still not a thing. It was honestly the most frustrating time to my school life because it was incredibly boring and I was so eager to go to school too. It ended up with my math skills decaying because I thought it wasn't required and then they suddenly ramped it up again later down the line.
