FFXIII's battle theme. Covers it's severe mediocrity with cheap parlour tricks that have (ironically) blinded far too many people when it's a tonally inconsistent mess with an intro that lasts just short AND long enough for it to make the transition terribly awkward to something that doesn't fit anything whatsoever.
As a bonus here's a battle theme that actually shares some similar instrumentation and theming as what it tried to do but is better in just about every way since it understands the structure it's going for and stays consistent with itself even as it shifts.

Agreed. The singer they use in 4 is shit compared with based old lady they used for 3. Her voice is so fucking flat and she can barely hold a note even when the song isn't straining her at all. When they both sing the same battle theme it really shows her up.

Also I think it's funny that while a better song, that's the example you decide to post to show his hard work in action, since it doesn't go very far and is a bit repetitive. Maybe it's supposed to be though. It's also funny since many of his songs I've heard barely last longer than a minute.

Don't get me wrong, when he can actually be bothered to do some work Sakuraba is great, but he is the laziest man in the business and you can't even argue it. His work on Golden Sun was stellar, he managed to make the GBA sound chip sing which is difficult, and a lot of the tracks sounded very fresh apart from the standard Tales world map themes. Compare that to the last few Tales games he's worked on, he puts out a couple of solid battle themes and the rest of the OST is a rehash. I really don't know what your issue with Hamauzu is, his most recent work is one of my favorite battle themes of all time.

The riffs are different, you're confusing riffs with instrumentation, and that he can still make enjoyable music to listen to in a similar vein with their own unique traits is a talent in itself, even if some games aren't as unique as others due to him working on so many, though you're very wrong on SO5's OST even with it intended to have a similar feel to SO3. My only issue with Hamauzu is he has made many bad uninspiring tracks, FFXIII's battle theme being chief among them that everyone praises for no reason, you're the only one implying there's anything beyond that and turning it into some kind of composer contest like it's The World Ends With You. From what I've heard of it, World of Final Fantasy's OST is pretty solid (aside from the remixes) and I think FFXIII's boss theme by comparison is very underrated, but aside from that I haven't heard much that's praiseworthy, most are too focused on orchestra wanking or fall apart if they have to last any reasonable amount of time. He also ruined FFXHD's soundtrack.

The soundtrack for the PSP sounds like unused tracks for Persona 3, pretty sure it's the same singer too. The music isn't bad on its own, but it really doesn't fit with the game at all compared to its original soundtrack. There's also less tracks in the remake overall.

Yeah honestly there's very few good tunes from X-2, I can dig the YRP fight #1 track (the funky one from the prologue) because that went really fit for missions and for the overall tone. The default battle theme is just so terribly bland, and that's worse than being bad. At least a bad track can be hammy, cheesy, or interesting.
