Starting from the PS2 games and up I plan to play this chronologically by release, is there any reason as to not?

Also I come from a lot of Final Fantasy so what is this like in comparison? I am looking forward to it.

Also Atlus was so smart to put 5 on PS3, its what kind of helped push me to want to start this series. Don't have a PS4 and don't plan on it anytime soon.

If you're coming from Final Fantasy, you should start with Digital Devil Saga duology on PS2.
Mind you it's not two different games, it's the same game in two halves.
The reason I'm recommending it is because the gameplay is closest to traditional JRPG like Final Fantasy.

I get that but my biggest issue is going back to older titles where little QoL changes have been made that would make going backwards harder.

At least this is what I've been told about some of them and if true that would be annoying for sure.

Maybe safe to assume the games that are in the same year(couting DDS as one) would be more okay to play in any order.

Then again it seems every year since 03 they have made one of these games.

Also aren't all of these games like 40-60 hours?

DDS is not even SMT, neither is Persona, they're their own series with their own gameplay mechanics you fucking retard.

>not playing the PS1 games

Skipping Persona 1 is probably a good idea, but 2 is fucking amazing.

>I get that but my biggest issue is going back to older titles where little QoL changes have been made that would make going backwards harder.
t. I get my opinions from Super Best Friends Cast

How about you stop parroting Pats retardation and just play the games.

Just saying what I heard others say, I also would like your opinion, no need to be mean user.

I didn't hate what I saw when I looked it up and I considered it. I guess I still wil, its just I'd play it and want to get it over with the whole time to start one of the 3D ones.

I don't watch youtube fags sorry, just saying what other anons have said and they make a good point. If you have a differing opinion, thats what this thread is for I ask you share it.

You should start the games within SAME SERIES from oldest entry, but DDS is not Persona or SMT, and SMT is not Persona or DDS and so on.
MegaTen have various series.
You've got the Megami Tensei which is:
Megami Tensei 1 -> Megami Tensei 2 -> Shin Megami Tensei 1 -> Shin Megami Tensei 2 -> Shin Megami Tensei If... (untranslated, spinoff with its own mechanics) -> Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne -> Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey (spinoff with its own mechanics) -> Shin Megami Tensei 4 -> Shin Megami Tensei 4-2: Apocalypse

Then you've got Devil Summoner:
Devil Summoner -> Soul Hackers -> Raidou 1 (completely new mechanics, became Action RPG) -> Raidou 2 (evolved Raidou 1 mechanics)

Then you've got Persona:
Persona 1 -> Persona 2 Innocent Sin -> Persona 2 Eternal Punishment -> Persona 3 FES -> Persona 4 Golden -> Persona 5

Then you're got fucking Arena, which is a fighting game:
Arena 1 -> Arena 2 Ultimax

Digital Devil Saga:
DDS1 -> DDS2

Devil Survivor:
DeSu1 OC -> DeSu 2 RB

Get it now faggot?

No.

>they make a good point
They don't. And you can't tell either way because you don't even know what they're referring to. You're a parroting faggot one way or the other.

Just play one of the games that looks interesting to you

Don't listen to faggots that tell you to start with P1 or an SMT earlier than Nocturne, those will just put you off, and you can return to them later if you want more anyways

Just play a good series like Wizardry, or Might & Magic. There's no need to destroy your braincells with this weebed-up and watered-down turd of a franchise.

They all look very interesting user. Thanks for the opinion though, it is considered.

Either explain yourself or leave, you're literally offering nothing here. At least tell me why its wrong. You are the worst kind of faggot.

Also I don't need to know specifics faggot, I have played other video games franchises with multiple games, its a very real thing. Some games more, some less.

I'd like some second opinion on this pic from fans of the series.

I wanna get weeb'd tho.

Any specifics?

Honestly the best entry points are in my opinion:

Persona 3 FES for Persona (if you play 4 or 5 first you will not be able to appreciate it properly anymore due to lack of direct party control in 3)
Nocturne or SMT4 for SMT
Raidou 1 for Raidou
DDS1 for DDS

All those are PS2 games.

>At least tell me why its wrong.
I already did.
> You are the worst kind of faggot.
Oh no, whatever will I do now, some asswipe thinks lesser of me.

Every single QoL change is convenience, nothing more and nothing less. If you think that being unable to teleport at will is gonna destroy your drive to play a game, then don't bother playing any of them.

DDS, Nocturne, SMTIV, P3 and P4 are all really strong starting points. I personally believe SMT1 holds up real well but it may not be the easiest to digest for your first time.

I started the franchise with Nocturne back in the day and then played Persona 2 Eternal Punishment which was enjoyable but kind of a slog.

>doesnt explain
>says he did
>ends up doing so

ha ha thanks you helped me anyways

>PS2 up
>Not playing SMT 1, Jack Bros, etc.

>Every single QoL change is convenience, nothing more and nothing less. If you think that being unable to teleport at will is gonna destroy your drive to play a game, then don't bother playing any of them.

This is all I asked for, do you have more examples? Things like that I don't care about so this could help me decide better.

I played Persona 1 and 2 after 5 and despite being obviously worse in the gameplay department, I still enjoyed the story and characters a lot. Since you can emulate them you can play the combat at 4x speed, which always helps.

Anyways, either Persona 3/4/5 or Digital Devil Saga are good entry points that will teach you the systems and spell terminology. You can always go back to older games later.

> Don't have a PS4 and don't plan on it anytime soon.
Well, you'll miss out on the upcoming mainline SMT game and "Project Re Fantasy" that way. You'll need to get one regardless sooner or later, but I guess to play P5 specifically you don't need one right now.

>Also I come from a lot of Final Fantasy so what is this like in comparison?
Better combat system, pokemon/digimon-like capturing and fusion/evolution of monsters, and a social life simulator, as well as a time mechanic that adds a bit of weight to your daily decisions.
Persona is pretty unique, you got to have first hand experience with it to get a full picture.

Digital Devil Saga is a spin-off.

Fucking hell, and you wonder why more people don't get into MegaTen with these attitudes?

The only issue is that Nocturne doesnt tell you what its weird ass spell names mean in combat unlike the other PS2 games so you might want some megaten experience before hand

Play the PSP version of Persona 1 and Persona 2 Innocent Sin, PSX version of Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, then PS2's Persona 3 FES and Persona 4, if you liked P3 enough you can play Persona 3 Portable which allows you to play a female protagonist on a visualnovel-ish style gameplay. As for SMT, you can play Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 and least you can check Raidou's games Devil Summoner 1 and 2, which are very differente from other SMT entries but very fun nonethless, (you control a freaking cool detective that can summon demons and slash and shoot enemy demons too)

>Also Atlus was so smart to put 5 on PS3
It was originally a PS3 game anyways

Forgot to add you can play all games on PC if you have a semi-decent pc for PS2 on PCSX2 games and any potato will run the PSP ones on PPSPP, if you want to play in the original platform for muh intended experience there are sealed copies of the PS2 games for $15, but nothing compares the full hd experience of PCSX2 to the blurred jaggie mess that is the PS2.

I myself bought the games and ripped my own ISOs of them to play on the PCSX2

Just start wherever you want. The devil survivor games are pretty friendly to newcomers to SMT.
