All dialogue during fights is subtitled, retard.

The only times dialogue isn't subtitled is when it repeats something that has already been said, like in one of the recovery units when machines keep saying don't kill me etc. It's subtitled the first time but not when it repeats.

Because they're usually told -not- to, for whatever reason. A lot of the time voice actors for dubs are specifically told to avoid watching or listening to the original performances so it doesn't influence their own performances by making them unconsciously try to imitate it.

I know it doesn't make sense.

It just pissed me off how the subtitles clearly evoke a different personality altogether for 9S.

Yeah, I have a mediocre understanding of Japanese (I spent some time there, so I kind of had to).

I would have trouble sitting down and having a conversation with someone, but I can generally understand it alright. I still play with subs tho and 2bh it throws me the fuck off in this game.

It's so confusing to hear one thing then read something that is absolutely irrelevant to what they actually say.

The other point (which is the only one in my post) still stands.
Taro simply does a lot of story/character exposition during combat. Always did. Dod3 especially, trash fights had a lot of dialogue from the soldiers, while boss fights I constantly had to hold back so the bosses could finish saying their lines before I killed them.

This is my other issue with subtitles, I already understand enough of japanese to always notice if the subs are not just a bit, but way off. Its terribly annoying, whenever I watched english movies with my friends and had subs on it for our language, I get constantly distracted by noticing the completely needless differences in dialogue.
God knows why they do it...

I played with the jap audio and enjoyed it but I'm not going to lie when shit gets real in combat and there is dialogue I ain't got time to read the subtitles so I missed quite a bit of dialogue there, not a big deal since I'm planning to replay the game again entirely and might as well try the eng dub this time

i played the 2B route in JP, now I'm doing the 9S portion in english. its bearable but I really fucking hate the way 2B sounds. everyone else seems to be fine, though, with the exception of Pascal - i have no idea why the him sound like a little girl

Nier 1 dub is objectively better than the jap dub, especially with the hacked together subs.
