Are female characters really underrepresented?

Why do people keep saying that the number of male characters is overwhelming when compared to the amount of female ones when in fact males make the 16,77% of the total?

I think there's less impetus to tag a game as a game with a male in it because that concept doesn't get you brownie points. I can guarantee you there's more than 300 games with male protags in them, they just aren't stated as such because it's assumed to be the norm.

No, they aren't. The story writer has no obligation to represent any sex, race, or religion if it does not fit within the context of the story itself. There is no natural way to include such without it feeling forced, see every game that has done it in the past 5 years as example. The only thing that needs representation is the authors original concept and the story they pour their heart into.

Female characters are "underrepresented" in that a lot of major triple a games feature a male protagonist. Further more people ignore female characters because they don't fit within self centered parameters. Like Cammy from Street Fighter doesn't count because she is dressed like a whore, even though she is a perfectly likable character and role model. It is stupid, but that is how some people view it.

I've said the games are still ok to play, just less fun than games that let you feel like you're the one playing, and I'm too tired to articulate why it feels that way more and more in modern gaming. Eg. Snake eater vs MGSV. Something is different about the story telling and gameplay, and I find myself less sympathetic toward the main character.
