I started thinking about upgrading today because I was going to play Telltale's new meme game but you cannot run it on win7 without the evil update and it got me wondering about how long will it be before good games I actually want to play start requiring newer operating sytems

Well if you absolutely must run 10 what you can do is run it in a virtual machine and pass the GPU to it then install shutup 10 to reduce the amount of invasive bullshit as much as you can.
That way most of the spying will be contained in the VM while your main activity will be on your host OS.
That's what I am doing at the moment, but the catch is that you need to have hardware that supports it. Not sure if you can do it with windows 7, probably can with VMWare.
Currently using linux as host OS and open up windows whenever I feel like a game. No problems so far, even managed to get the HTC vive working without a hitch.

No. Ads are still there. Now there are issues where some people cannot install specific applications and other people are trying to install some pirated applications and those are blocked.
if you have the option to, DO NOT UPDATE TO IT. This OS has been nothing but suffering for me and I'm at the point where I'd rather risk downloading a cracked version from Sup Forums. It's not even the retarded telemetry, but the poor optimization, and the updates just made it worse and worse. I just disabled them altogether.
It takes like 30 seconds to turn off the ads and telemetry with the new update and 5 minutes to uninstall the crap that periodically gets installed with updates.
If you don't want to deal with that, pirate the Enterprise version of Windows 10 or switch to Linux (where your problems will be a million times worse).
Win 10 does so much shit behind the hood that I feel like going back to Win 7.
Even when I'm playing a game, I still notice it doing shit which it shouldn't be. I'm guessing "game mode" disables that, but I fucking disabled all the xbox shit which also shouldn't be on Win 10, so I have no fucking idea if it's even working.

I don't have any games on Steam that require DX12 only, so there's no way I'm updating from 7. Also tried it on release day back in 2015, not impressed.

Unfortunately the spyware is still there. Microsoft recently published a list of everything it collects and it includes keystrokes, voice data, .doc/.ppt/etc. files and even the ability to grab binary files from your hard drive on demand.
Every time there's a major update the privacy options all reset to the most permissive. Presumably it sends a big batch of telemetry data before you can turn them down again.
The game features they added offer no performance gain (look up the benchmarks) and actually break things like OBS. People who care about performance are having to disable it all.
It's a shame the PC platform is getting screwed over so badly.

Install Windows 7 instead and disable windows update.
Use the Sup Forums wiki to decide which updates you actually need for shit to function, after a certain point they all become reliant on the spyware updates that you have to avoid however.
Updates are force-installed and non-optional. Telemetry is hard-coded into system critical programs now, causing crashes if disabled. System settings and default programs (Edge browser, Groove music) are known to reset to Microsoft preferred in the background without knowledge on resets and updates.
Windows 7 > Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB > Shit > Windows 10

I finally upgraded a couple of months back from windows 7.
Windows 7 has a bug with some memory configurations that limits you to 8 gb. This happened to me.
Windows 10 has been great. It's much sleeker looking, it doesn't have all of that big square app bullshit.
I recommend it highly. (Though I'd really just prefer linux).

Honestly I've been fine so far. If you're using any version of windows you should be using win10 at this point, all of them are shit but win10 is less shit. People who put win7 on a pedestal like to ignore the issues it has and nitpick the issues win10 has.

As far as JUST the operating system, as an operating system, its fine. You’ll even notice some performance gains in regards to gaming. There are ads in the start menu, you can remove them with some tweaking… I’ve seen people post images with ads in file explorer but I never see anything in there on my system.
But it is still 100% a data collecting tool and you should keep this in mind. Nothing you do on the system is private. Just assume everything you do is being logged and act accordingly.
I would highly recommend switching to Linux for non gaming purposes. Or hell, even Mac OS.

dual booting is far more annoying on a pre-built computer because of secureboot
installing on a computer you assembled from parts though is as easy as disconnecting all the hard drives and SSDs except the one you want to put the new OS on and installing it

Only if the file system the other OS is using isn't readable by windows, like EXT4, windows uses NTFS or that new file system they came up with
Its only a pain because Windows has the bad habit of intentionally deleting other disc drives and nuking the boot records of other platforms.
So if you're going to dual boot be aware of that and install Windows first, or yank drives.
Also be aware that if you want to share files between platforms that while Linux can read everything Windows is restricted to only supporting a few file systems so you'll want to go with the lowest common denominator for a shared drive.

People keep spouting that meme, but it hasn't been true in a decade or more.
The installers tend to be nicer than you get with either Windows, or OS X, and the only real complexity is deciding what interface you want since there's everything from classic MacOS inspired desktops, to post-desktop experimental stuff that Microsoft ripped off their new interface from.
Depending on your hardware everything should just work. That's really the issue that most people run into. Building a Linux machine isn't quite the same as building a Windows machine, but isn't quite as obnoxious as getting a Hackintosh together. You just have to be aware of things like:
Nvidia didn't really start optimizing their Linux drivers for gaming until the 700 series and still doesn't really play that nicely with Linux so they can be more problematic than they should and require their own tools for some things.
AMD only really fully supports GCN hardware, and then if you want the latest features you need 3rd or 4th gen GCN but if you've got that and you're up to date everything will just work because the support is built in no external drivers requried (though on Ubuntu you need a PPA to keep them up to date)
