I played through the game several times, and each time I only romanced Rise.

I think it's more the ultimate proof that Bioware had become a zombie company; the one thing they sold Mass Effect on was that it was going to be this epic space adventure where your choices and decisions mattered and it caps off with a room where you just pick an ending and nothing you did changed a fucking thing

I honestly think the Extended Cut is adequate. Not great, but it gets the job done.

Either way the ending had a huge amount of hype, and took the risk of going for a tragic plot-hole riddled ambiguous ending rather than deliver on the closure people were expecting. The whole debacle was blown way out of proportion though. I don't think I've ever seen a negative reaction to a game's ending that widespread before.

It's on purpose, it's a cultural touchstone in a way that's stronger than cliches here.

Essentially there's a "contract" between viewer and author that certain scenes play out in familiar, funny ways they enjoy. They expect, literally from the moment that scene is setup, that it'll involve some variance on the guys walking in on the girls and something happening.

It doesn't translate well into the west obviously, but they enjoy it.
