I think Automata has pretty good voice acting. You don't get that overacting sound that pops up in a lot of other dubs.

Specially in Nier where a lot of conversations are happening in the middle of fights.
And a lot of times not everything has subs, like is emil's shop song even subtitled?

If the dub is good (rare) then I'll play the dub. Most of the time Sub it is.

Only recent example I can think of for a good dub is Nier: Automata.

If every Japanese voice acting sounds the same in a game I'll choose the dub.

You should always choose the voice language the game was designed in. It's what the director intended, reflects his artistic vision for the game and represents the actors he chose for his characters.
This should be obvious for anyone but the philistine who does not understand art.

A dub was created by a third-party localisation team and does not represent the vision of the creator.

The dub doesn't even represent the original dialogue, because its based on the subtitles that are wrong or don't have the same meaning.

If the dub is at least decent I'll use that. I usually read the text anyways so the voice acting is just background noise. But I prefer background noise I can understand over background noise I can't. Now, if the dub is legit bad and I have the option to switch I'll use the original audio.
Or in Automata's case I used both since I played through several times.
