The biggest upset about this game above all else is that it's at that point of polish that you know that this game would have been a really good game if they didn't essentially give us a batch of cookies where you can still smell the dough.

I hate it even more now because it helped cement the "Sonic is bad" meme even though it's pretty much the only bad Sonic game outside of Sonic Boom.

That explains it. It's a terribly unpolished game, especially when this was supposed to be the step into the next generation in a company's flagship series. And even underneath the glitches, the core gameplay is bland.

Honestly I tried to like this game when it first came out, else I wouldn't of even got it but the loading screens and constant bugs just drove me insane and my data got erased 3 times so I just lost my patience

Sonic levels are decent at best. They drag on forever and those mach speed segments reduce the game to trial and error. Shadow levels are decent as well but could do without the vehicle sections. Also I hate that, without warning, you're forced to play as other characters. I hated it in SA2 and hate it in this game as well. I hate that there seems to be a tradition of a game with Sonic in title and Sonic being the only character on the cover, he's only represented in one third of the game.

The worst parts by far is the Silver campaign though. Silver runs slowly and you have to basically come to a complete stop to use your mind powers. You barely have a reliable way to aim projectiles either and there are some parts of the game that require precision.

Also the story is fucking ridiculous but that is something you have to expect with Sonic games. Stories about ancient prophecies, civilizations and princesses that can't cry are supposed to be taken seriously alongside woodland creatures of varying primary colors.

Yes, people exaggerate how shitty Sonic 06 is, but it's in no way a good game at all. It's playable for what it is, but not a fun experience. It is definitely the worst 3D Sonic game.

Sonic 2006 was supposed to be THE DEFINITIVE Sonic game of the century and it was hyped up to be so.

Unleashed Sonic is still to this day the model with the most polygons in any Sonic game. They really wanted to make a visually good looking game. Shame about the fact that it's boring as fuck to play.

I love Sonic 06, must have finished it over 10 times now, know it like the back of my hand, but it is an awful fucking game. Pick it up only if you like breaking games, it's like a mad scientist experince in that regard. The glitches you see on lets plays and on the internet are the tip of the iceberg. Once you buy the Sky Gem, a whole new universe opens up.

Did you play the early demo? That one was actually faster and less buggy than the final game.

It's not just that. Sonic Unleashed was the first game to utilize the hedgehog engine. An advanced(for it's time) lighting engine that accounted for global illumination. Meaning that light bounces from object to object, creating varying degrees of intensity. What this does, is create the effect that objects exist inside of the same space, giving the feeling of a realistic atmosphere.

Honestly, Sonic's story was hit and miss, Shadow's was pretty fun but Silver's was fucking awful. Coupled with the glitches and absolutely awful plot (I know it's a Sonic game but still the romance shit was awful), plus load times left a bad taste in my mouth and this is from a guy who would put Shadow the Hedgehog in his top 5 Sonic games.
OST was great though.

I dunno user, I was in the same boat as you about six years ago, but having replayed it, it's honestly really hard to defend. Best thing about it (aside from the OST) is the level design. Decent stuff, almost SA1 tier. I think there's a total of three good cutscenes with nice character moments. Blaze is genuinely fun to play as. I wish she was playable in more levels.

Aside from that though, this game is trash. Maybe not as trash as everyone makes it out to be, but it's pretty damn terrible. I give it a 3/10

It is one of the worst games of all time. It worse than Ride to Hell, Ride to Hell was at least playable and had funny moments because the developers clearly had no talent whatsoever so the cut scenes are cringe worthy.
Sonic 06 is just horrible in every way. It's not entertaining bad, it's just bad, horrible graphics, bad camera, game breaking bugs, bad controls... even 40% rating is too high for that game.

Sonic Boom is bad, but not nearly as bad as Sonic 06. At least it's playable from beginning to end.

What bothers me most is that Sonic 06 is basically Sonic Adventure 3 storywise.

It's effectively held together by duct tape, chewing gum, and the will of the Lord Almighty and even then it chugs badly at certain scenes.
The bosses are lame even by modern sonic standards
The robot designs are hot liquid shit
The billiard puzzle room
Silver's campaign which was a special kind of shit because of the aforementioned glitches and buggy-ness get worsen when you actively try to add physics on top of it
The story somehow makes SA2 (a game where a sizable chunk of the story has to operate on "GUN can't tell the difference between two radically different looking hedgehogs, one of which is a hero multiple times over, and another apparently being recognized by sight by the organization's commanding officer if you take Shadow's game into account) look solid.
And finally, if you take a singular playthrough of a game, all three campaigns plus the last bonus one, several hours of it will be devoted to load exclusively.
The only reason why I won't say its the worst game ever because the idea of the worst thing ever is immensely subjective and Superman 64 exists, which I also played.

If you look past his kidnapping of children and raping them in his basement Marc Dutroux is a pretty good guy
