It's a nod to the Christmas special where Bart considers stealing a video game and different characters (Mario, Luigi, DK, and Sonic) all encourage him to do so.

Not him, but I've seen every Simpsons season up to about 14 and Didn't get it. There's just not much motivation to rewatch it knowing how awful it's gotten

Witcher 2's clear the mines quest is riddled with Lord of The Rings memes. Even the dwarves are called Balin and Duin. I think it was unnecessary.
