Because people have busy lives and like to play vidya. But typical tablets didn't have the buttons and what not for traditional vidya, so Nintendo made one that did. You also don't ALWAYS want to play on the tablet (especially when you get home from work), so they let you use it on the TV as well.

It serves a lot of purposes you wouldn't expect, It's really versatile.
