I recall the game working differently, but it didn't look dumbed down, more like just done differently.

They didn't dumb it down. The sequel was just tedious and frustrating because the hero AI was stupid as hell combined with a high spawnrate of enemies and quests.

>Heroes aren't attached to guilds/castles/guardhouses meaning they won't EVER defend ANYTHING unless you put up a bounty, another byproduct of AI being lobotomized
