now that the dust has settled and this game will no longer be updated, can we all agree it was a really good open world shooter, with some flawed RPG mechanics?
Now that the dust has settled and this game will no longer be updated...

Yes, but the Sup Forums contrarian screechers are coming, so safe yourself from any other reply when you're still in tme.
I just realized after playing BotW and then coming back to Fallout 4, it makes FO4 seem like it is just bursting with content.
It wasn't an RPG. A role-playing game implies that you get to have a character you get to role-play as and make decisions for that character in the setting, whether it's plot related or how you want to build the character to survive in that world. In Fallout 4 you have a pre-set character, so you can't really customize them, and further than that you don't get to choose anything in the plot beyond which faction you want to win in the end. There are first-person shooters with more varied endings than that. Every quest you only had varying degrees of saying yes, a voiced protagonist was the worst move Bethesda could have made for the game, and this includes what they did to the SPECIAL system. I could nitpick, like how guns are reversed for no reason and how the AI is bad, but I won't do that in this post. The game is lazy and somehow a step down from Fallout 3 which once upon a time I thought would have been an impossible feat to accomplish. Bethesda keeps surprising me in all the wrong ways.
You're going to call me an elitist for saying the game is bad, so whatever fuck it. I'm going back to playing Underrail.
I enjoyed it like the rest. My only complaint was it didn't feel as gritty and scary as the other. Particularly Fallout 3. FO3 would have my adrenaline going during combat.
FO4 is a good fps, but a terrible Fallout game.
Good thing OP said it was a "really good open world shooter" and not an RPG, then, didn't he?
Typical sperg can't read the OP and then writes a wall of text about how it's not an RPG.
Yeah, I've spent hours playing it as nothing more than a shooter with a handful of fun quests. I don't expect a FNV-style playthrough, I just play it as the pre-war veteran looking for his son and I find that fun enough.
I literally do not believe anyone who says the shooting is good. You do not hold this opinion. Nobody does.
More or less. Waiting for modders to finally stop sucking Skyrim's dick and make SexLab for FO4 so I can attempt to play it for real.
youre retarded
PSA: Playable children mod is up for grabs on PS4 again
It was blacklisted before & the author still seems to be banned but it was updated today somehow and you can download it again. I'd grab it now because it could be gone before the end of the day, I think it's a hiccup on Bethesda's site and not intentional.
Which is, of course, an illusion created by lack of BotW's content. You know that user, right?
Good shooter, terrible Fallout.
Also, feels like most of content was not entirely completed - significant omissions in most categories. Also, no 10mm SMG, DKS Sniper Rifle, proper M4 or G3, and LMG. All you get are those crappy pistol, hunting rifle and WW1 machinegun. Rifle, like the Pipe version, are left handed.
I mean, who the fuck makes left-handed receivers... Bethesda ofcourse.
of course but its not a niche weebshit game no one knows about so Sup Forums hates it
>you think you do, but you don't
It needed to have literally any RPG mechanics in the first place before they could even be flawed.
It's a better management/world building sim than it is an RPG. I preferred bossing around a bunch of mindless drones over doing the shitty quests.
>with some flawed RPG mechanics?
that which does not exist cannot be flawed
Fallout 4 is the most solid reason why we can use "a good game but not an x game" phrase. In this scenario though, it's predecessors even 3 were so good in their own terms that this game instantly becomes mediocre because it's not a "Fallout" game. For example, I enjoyed CoD: AW even though it's not "realistic tacticool" like CoD4 but I can safely say it's still a shooter and therefore a CoD game. They just altered the formula. But things that made 1-2-3-NV good were absent in this game, and the things they lacked were implemented decently at most (like shooting, extensive modding and sprinting). So we have a shooter which has RPG sprinkles all over it. Is it a good shooter? No. Does it have great RPG elements. Absu-fucking-lutely not. So what it is?
It's an abomination. Not an awful one, but still an abomination.
Far Harbor excluded.
What about the shooting is great, exactly?
Everything is bulletsponges.
It was an okay open world shooter with a terrible story, and terrible RPG mechanics.
It's a mediocre shooter at best.
The only thing i'm willing to give FO4 is that it's the best mix between shooter and sandbox i guess.
It's not what I want out of Fallout, and I'm very sad that the series took the direction it did because as far as I know, there's no other games quite like it, and now there won't be any others ever again.
>get to goodneighbor
>cool, it's like an off brand new reno
>there are literally 4 side quests, most are just collecting scrap out in the wastes
it is a good open world game, the RPG and shooter parts are not its strong points
>hitscan weapons
>bullet sponge enemies
>no ammunition types
>linear weapon modding
yah, no.
Actually, I've been meaning to ask this. Are there any other RPGs like Fallout?
What I like about it is that it's a solo RPG in which you're given a lot of narrative and mechanical roleplaying tools to create an individual within the world of the game. Everything from the SPECIAL stats to the skills and dialog options reinforce this.
Most other RPGs I've played just give you a big party to micromanage and downplay the PC as a character, and some like Wasteland 2 just don't give you much in the way of narrative roleplaying at all.
The only other game I can think of that comes close is Arcanum, but even that's not as good as Fallout.
What is it's strong points user? Its Jetsons art direction?
Nah, it sucked. I tried my best to enjoy it, but it's not Fallout. If you have fun doing literally the same thing over and over and over without any sort of interesting plot or story to justify or carry the gameplay then you're the kind of tard this game is geared towards and you should die.
Mods.
It was a solid FPS. If it'd been just an FPS, it might've even been enjoyable. But they forced in a shit as fuck RPG element with a bunch of shit that made no sense and wrecked pre-existing lore, even if you only ever played Fallout 3.
honestly, it wasn't even a good open world shooter. it was mediocre as that. maybe they should concentrated on it being a shooter or an rpg, hell even concentrate fully on the whole town building aspect but not all of them and fail.
tl;dr falls short on the rpg, on shooter and town building mechanics
It was a shit open world game. Environments were frequently empty or could not be interacted with in a meaningful way. It was populated with MMO tier fetch quests and "endless" quests which manage to be even worse.
It had such barebones RPG mechanics it might as well not had any at all. Voiced protagonists will always be awful in RPG's.
I'm interested in what people whose first Fallout games were FO3 and NV think about it. I haven't played it yet, but from what I understood it disappointed both new and old fans?
It's the only Fallout game that doesn't look like absolute ass, and the first game since 2 to have diagonal running animations
It was fun for the first dozen hours or so, but then the amount of wasted potential starts getting frustrating and you realize that the game has no staying power whatsoever.
Still, I enjoyed those first hours of running around the commonwealth roleplaying as my dad.
it's a good game for exploring, but as soon the character opens its mouth I want to kill myself
Game felt small desu. Was quickly running out of places to explore and the gun play felt average at best. Good animation though.
No mods can fix most of the garbage Beth put in there.
I tried, but goddamn it aint working.
>game wants you to care enough about your son to try and find him
>can't even name the little fucker
Is Bethesda completely run by idiots? Why would you have Codsworth call your character by name instead of your kid if they wanted to make you care about him?
Hell, they could have done both and they still didn't think of it. I don't understand.
They should just remake FO1.
The game would be great if it were like that first trailer - cyberpunk/steampunk world, dark, deep characters, big cities...
I wouldn't even care the lore is faulty, or that it isn't an RPG.
It was a mediocre open world shooter with retarded RPG mechanics.
The modding can't save this game since the base is so terrible compared to the other Fallouts, that should tell you something about the settled dust
>finally find him
>he's an old man
It would be cool to see it in Unity engine, but keep it 2D, I hate 3D isometric / top down view.
I enjoyed it yes but honestly i wouldve stoped playing it by now if it wasnt for the mods. It's extremely flawed
i give it 7/10 but as always, mods save beth games. if you mod it right to your likings it can be a 9/10
After playing New Vegas, I have a hard time going back to the boring-as-fuck dialogue, and in FO4. That I could choose to be a goody two shoes, or a terrible villain, or anything in between, (see, cheeky dickwaffle) in NV was just wonderful. Though I do enjoy the combat and the movement in FO4 a lot more, so I'll give it that. FO4 needs a true first-person mod so I can see my player model in first person. NV has that and it adds so much to my suspension of disbelief.
FO4 was my first, but NV captured my heart.
I got spurs, that jingle jangle jingle...
I'd rather have a new Fallout game in the style of the old ones. Fallout 1 is still gonna be there, after all.
Even if the new game isn't quite as good, it'd still be more classic Fallout.
Was it hitscan? Not saying I don't believe you, just don't know. I remember leading some shots, mostly with just the sniper only.
Its a really shallow game
Whenever you get out of the vault your first few hours are great with all the shit you think you can do but then you begin to notice how little there actually is to do. Also every side qest sucked dick, the main quest too but that's expected
I got more fun out of building a base that would 'lure' settlers in and then throw them through a meat grinder. I miss the karma system, at least it made me feel like I did something evil.
There's a mod that adds projectile physics to the bullets, so that's probably what you're talking about.
I actually liked the game, (mostly due to playing it on piece of shit PC that was barely able to run it, so that made me enjoy it more and be happy about it) I felt good when I just dipped my toe in it; First time in Diamond City, the atmosphere, soundtrack, radio, starting the first settlement, but after 10 hours I realized there isn't more, there's nothing actually, Diamond City is small, without quests, the "Atom bomb baby" is playing every five minutes and the DJ is an annoying tard, and when you kill him he gets replaced by even more annoying kid that has 10 lines to say, the settlements are EVERYWHERE, without a meaningful city to visit.
Where is your source that it will no longer be updated?
To add to - and this is just the way games go in iteration, as far as graphics.
I do appreciate the amount of mod capability this game has, and how much that lends to character customization. I am pretty annoyed that there haven't been any real add-on campaigns by anyone yet. Most things on Nexus are just aesthetic mods.
Skyrims Elyswer was awesome.
Is there?? I didn't know that, what's it called?
his asshole contains all sort of facts
its a very strong world design, never really feels that empty but not cluttered with tons of stupid shit. the art direction helps too.
the piss poor RPG systems, quests, and retarded gun mechanics ruined the game for me
Weapons of Fate on Nexus. It makes a big difference, especially on sniper rifles. Calculating the trajectory just right is always satisfying
Maybe I didn't mean literally, but all they need to do is read the book on FO1 and rip it off completely and we'll be fine.
Oh, ok.
the settlement system was cancer, the shooting was cancer, the questing was cancer
i had cancer by the time i finished the story, and i fucking hated what they did with it
FNV was easily the better game
Oh yes. I spent too many hours as a camping sniper pussy in BF3, and god was that satisfying.
My first Fallout was New Vegas. I prefer 4. It's fun and doesn't look like a brown and yellow turd. Body morphing doesn't make all NPCs the same. Non potato characters in a Bethesda game. Satisfying combat. Couldn't give a shit less if it's not a real Fallout. It's a fun stand alone game.
Wow, you are shallow.
>tfw FO4 is my first game
>everytime i want to try an older one, i get turned off by the garbage, barely playable combat of NV and 3
feels bad man
> I'm going back to playing Underrail.
What build you doing? I'm not playing it again until the DLC gets released but I was thinking I'd start a completely new game with it. I did psi monk last time but that was just a tad bit too OP I think, although I have to say psi was a lot of fun.
If you liked Fallout 4 at all the chances are you wouldn't like NV or 3.
Find me something as good as this conversation in FO4.
Who gives a shit? Go be autistic someplace else.
Play 1 and 2. Combat isn't very good in those either but at least you can turn it down to easy and breeze through encounters.
Plus the critical hit descriptions are pretty funny.
why
>now that the dust has settled and this game will no longer be updated, can we all agree it was a really good open world shooter, with some flawed RPG mechanics?
No. It was a mediocre at best shooter, with some increidbly bad writing, threadbare RPG mechanics, and a whole bunch of half-baked crafting, collecting, and settling mechanics.
The armor mechanic, although I'd say it's the best one Bethesda has implemented to date, strongly favors high damage per projectile, to the point where (non legendary) shotguns are all worthless. Full auto, for some reason, is balanced not just by the availability of ammunition, but it also does like half the damage per bullet for whatever reason, and so against armored targets is often strictly worse than semi-auto. The minigun, which ought to be awesome, is kind of crap, and as such, they give you one straight off.
It's only noteworthy feature is how much "content" there is. it's fucking overflowing with shit to do. There's just not much reason to do it. Spend hours playing the sims, except your sims don't actually fucking do anything. Craft weapons, except that barring legendaries, there's no reason to use anything except the highest damage per projectile weapon with common ammo you can make, with all the most expensive mods, because it's mostly all straight upgrades. Do endless procedurally generated quests which are all "go to x, kill y"
Strip away all the filler, and you have, what, five actual towns? Diamond City, Goodneighbor, Vault whatever, Bunker Hill, and the Institute? A fair number of places to explore, but hardly Bethesda's best effort.
It's a prime example of a shallow sandbox. 7/10, it's wide enough to keep you entertained for a fair number of hours, but not deep enough to bother replaying.
>REEEEEE YOU LIKE SOMETHING I DON'T!
the mods are cool
holy fuck
Same man. Mods will save that game though, at least makes the controls and combat modern enough by todays standards.
Look up 'Project Nevada' on Nexus, it is perfect for it. Then load up on as many visual mods as you can.
>15fps
I made it to whatever city and met piper, haven't played since
HUD is awful, shooting is awful and seems to force you into that slowmo shit, NPCs are ugly and the main story of FINDIJG YOUR SON is completely stupid since it just clashes with your attempts to RPG (oh I had a son and husband but I really wanna be a raging lesbian now!!)
Its a very different game. NV and 3 are primarily RPG's, although the latter is not a very good one at that. Fallout 4 is more like an open world shooter.
>tfw this is better than any settlement Bethesda have ever designed
>Sup Forums is basically Reddit now
>still can't have a fallout thread without faggot fedora tipping Obsidian shills ruining it
Autism was a mistake.
It was barely above average, didn't live up to the previous games at all, the gameplay was the only thing that was even improved upon, and it still felt below the industry standard. don't suck Todd's dick too hard fag
>tfw we could have kept getting classic Fallout games under Troika
>not roleplaying a cougar on a midlife crisis wondering if saving her son is the best choice or not
>Projecting this hard
Didn't say I didn't like it - I've got the same number of hours in both NV and FO4 -just said that conversations and dialogue were way better.
I'm guessing you're the one still going "Man, FO4 sucks but I cant go and admit it because of how hyped I got for it, cause my friends on Sup Forums will think I'm a loser if I change my mind."
Got news for you buddy...
...
2/5 game, not being contrarian. Everything is bad in this game except the companions who actually have a lot of dialogue for different missions and locations. Not a single interesting location in the game, not a single good quest except for the bar one in Diamond city. Terrible dialogue, awful writing that constantly ruins the lore. Haven't even tried the settlement shit. Dumb loot system that doesn't make quests rewarding, it's more rewarding to kill legendary mole rats. Instead of having skills to improve your PC and perks to change the game and make it more fun, now you just have to use your perks to improve your stats. Fun perks like lady killer are now useless. No skill checks, no options to roleplay. No skill cap and no difference in choices so there's no reason to replay the game. Literally can't find a single place in the game where I get to be evil, or screw someone over for monetary gain.
Play another Fallout game for the RPG elements or play Borderlands if you want to shoot shit. Fallout 4 has no value.
On the other hand, Fallout 1-2 NV makes me fucking cum.
>tfw Diamond City isn't as good as this
I have over 1000 hours in it and I still play it pretty much every day. Nice armchair psychology though.
Never going to happen under Bethe$da's imprisonment.
fuck off, Sup Forumsedditor. fo4 is garbage with no redeeming merits
>HUD is awful
It's pretty much the same as it was in 3 and NV
>shooting is awful and seems to force you into that slowmo shit
You're fucking mental, this is far and away the easiest 3D Fallout to just shoot normally in without VATS
>NPCs are ugly
So the same as in 3 and NV then
>and the main story of FINDIJG YOUR SON is completely stupid since it just clashes with your attempts to RPG
So just like 3 and the MUH DAD story then
>tfw that looks sick as hell
>tfw that if you actually had that in your game, it'd just be full of a bunch of glassy-eyed slack jawed retards saying shit like
>"You've got a dangerous look about you. Hope you ain't here for me."
>"If you work, you eat, It's as simple as that"
>"Easy livin', this ain't."
>"Hope you aint' one of those synths, here to spy on me"
>"Ain't looking for trouble, I hope"
Bitch I'm the fucking Mayor.
Welcome to the city of 1 FPS, Massachusettes.
How much of that was settlement building?
I WISH THERE WAS SOME CONTENT IN THERE.
Because your idiot mind wouldn't be able to comprehend the non-retarded game design with actual depth and shit. Stick to CoD and Uncharted, bro.
Fallout 4 is the only game from 2015 I still play long after getting bored of TW3 and MGSV
What do you do in it all day?
Genuine question, I tried getting back into it a few times but I always stop playing after building a base for myself.
