Because christianity is cool as shit in MYTHOLOGY AND FANTASY not when you shove it in people's faces irl. Plus, really. Even if you don't believe in god don't we all secretly yearn for a deeper personal spirituality?
This.
It's a nice idea that some people take too serious and push this shit into peoples throats.
"Holy" lore in fantasy games usually take the most polytheist old testament esque take on christianity which usually appeals to nerds
Faith in video games/fantasy actually does something, unlike in real life.
Because having a god that actually does stuff and empowers their believers is actually really cool stuff. Telling people they can't eat certain foods or do certain things because of a unprovable god isn't. If worshiping a god could give me powers you bet I'd be praying for hours every day.
God gives you eternal life, what better power is there than that?
I see this has quickly turned into some cancerous faux philosophy forum instead of a question of rpg archetypes
Playing Paladin because it's epic fantasy/fiction
Allegedly by an unprovable god out of the other hundreds of religions. Try again. Also you already have eternal life, the different is how you end up spending it as far as religions go and none of them seem particularly pleasant from the most popular religions.
the idea of not eating certain foods probably comes from people getting sick by them thousands of years ago
Because their holy power, and perhaps even the source that they call upon it from, is demonstrably real. Also shining knights are fucking cool as fuck
So my brother is thinking about becoming a Buddhist. I don't know if this is good or bad, though it seems like he might enjoy it a bit. Anybody here have experience with Buddhists?
Naturally. A lot of what is told within holy books are due to cultural issues at the region where they were created. Such as Christmas having pagan origins. Personally it doesn't help the case of the respective religions when they still push it now.
I can't explain it. I just know I like it. Healing people is awesome. Also, generally speaking, in fantasy games the dieties you serve occasionally communicate with you or show their presence rather than not existing at all. :^)
Does he like to play monk classes?
>Confusing atheism with mal-atheism
One doesn't believe, the other hates God.
Everyone can believe in ______-zoth and his _____ Order of the ______. Oh but then there's the evil cabal of _____-rak!
It's a good FANTASY thing to get behind. Holy warrior who is kind and receives aid from a higher power, dedicated to staying pure and courageous in the face of those who oppose. You could be a priest who heals or a paladin who wields an awesome hammer or mace.
You could be an atheist and still appreciate the music sung at church, how generous religious organizations can be, and the dedication true believers have to their scripture and practices. Everyone needs hope, whether you're an atheist hoping for good grades or a praying theist with family in the morning. Hope isn't tied to religion, it's inner refuge and a means to focus on a goal.
I don't believe in warlocks and witches either but I like them playing them in games too, don't have to be wiccan to love playing one.
I don't know, maybe. He stopped playing vidya awhile ago.
Because the idea of a god is in all of us, and if we choose to not admit it, it shows unconsciously
t. atheist who mains paladins (I do faith builds too but suck at using them so I end up using something else on my other chars)
Gods actually exist in video games
I've briefly read a few books on it and it's not really a bad religion. It's about introspection and improving yourself. Though depending on the sect they can get violent towards aggressors such as the Buddhists that retaliated against Muslims and killed them. That being said make sure he isn't a huge faggot about it because Western people who become Buddhists are really just "Buddhists" in name only and use it for snowflake points.
Holy/Angelic motifs are always cool as shit
Personally, I roll Rogue/Thief when given the option
I asked an Atheist friend of mine why they play Paladin and their answer was basically this.
>Dude, it makes sense because in this world they actually have evidence for Gods existing. The people that don't follow the beings that can vaporize them with a thought are the stupid ones.
Careful with that edge, user.
Sounds like a decent dude
as an atheist i love the idea of paradise and life after death, but i just don't see it happening irl.
video games can and i can look like a holy harlot while i pray the boners away
>thief
>edge
shut the fuck up. I'm being Robin Hood not Sasuke Uchiha. Learn your fucking archetypes
This yes
>real life
>God does not seem to give a fuck
>video games
>God FUCKING SMITES NIGGAS WITH LIGHTNING IF YOU ASK NICELY
Gee I wonder
This
Because if God was TRULY real and he gave me magical powers I would be the most faithful, devoted son of a bitch on the planet.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that many atheists are atheists in the first place out of disappointment that there's no God in real life but in a fantasy world where these forces are objective there's no problem.
>i can look like a holy harlot
this
i love playing as high cha seductive cleric females
even better if i can tease little boys with my huge holy tits
She would be if she had a dick and didn't try to shove her athism in people's faces or bring it up when it has no relevance to the conversation.
>disappointment that there's no God in real life
Who /Apatheist/ here?
I personally do not believe in God but do like playing all kinds of holy fuckers in video games. Why? Well why the fuck not. I like all kinds of mythological stuff and your generic religious stuff kinda fits that bill.
got it
>she
please tell me she is in london
This thread is making me wonder if there really is a connection between being an atheist and enjoying healing/holy knights.
I played a faith/str build in all Dark souls games, and mained a whm in ffxiv.
Now I wonder what roles christianfriends like to play? Is there something about these holy archetypes that bore them? Are they instead drawn to occult classes/roleplay?
Agreed. Modern Christianity is shit. I'd even rather marry a traditionalist Muslim girl than some fake American Christian girl who doesn't act Christian
>not playing holy MILF nun warriors who are overly protective and kind while super fucking slutty with their #1 hero-in-training
It's novel to roleplay faith as someone without it.
>I'd even rather marry a traditionalist Muslim girl
then you better be ready to convert to Islam if you want her family to accept you, kaffir
I don't think he cares about video games OP
I'd much rather play as a super seductive tease assassin that NEVER puts out.
If there was a world where gods actively made their presence known, they would almost certainly fight with each other, and you damn well believe that I'm choosing sides to get holy powers so I can smite some heathens.
>Because christianity is cool as shit in MYTHOLOGY AND FANTASY not when you shove it in people's faces irl.
This. Being an EVIL DEMOLISHING MAN OF THE HIGHEST ORDER is fun fun fun to roleplay. Especially in games where you have a lot of freedom to how you play, like New Vegas.
>Got any chems?
>PETULANT SCUM
>Even if you don't believe in god don't we all secretly yearn for a deeper personal spirituality?
I just want to sleep endlessly. Fuck whatever meaning life may hold or not, give me a coma or just obliterate my consciousness so I can't perceive existence anymore. I covet that feeling of the dreamless sleep that is nothing.
It's just a game. Also, I may be a non-believer, but I'm endlessly fascinated by religion. It's interesting stuff, even if you don't necessarily buy into it.
>tfw play as a holy shortstack guardian of light (futa)
>tfw christian and always roleplay as demon summoner
Partially, it just doesn´t make sense that god is both omnipotent and loving, while allowing all sort of fucked up shit happen to people. Gods is fiction are usually loving towards subjects and really powerful, but not omnipotent which helps justify that they sometimes fail. They try to look out for their folk, it just doesn´t always work out. Which is way more easier to symphytise with than
>lol god works in misterious ways, you just don´t get it dipshit
I hope that message is true.
I'm pretty sure most atheists would believe if they were in a world where the divine can actually manifest and smite evil and so forth.
I think religion and the traditions behind all of it is all very interesting but that doesn't mean I believe in the grand poobah of heaven.
Real world faith is a tool to control the masses.
Fictional faith is about busting a cap in a gobo's ass and looking fly as fuck while your doing it.
They like hammers.
>I covet that feeling of the dreamless sleep that is nothing.
Congrats, you're one of the few who have figured it out. Now all you have to do is live your life uninhibited and with absolute true intention and you would have ascended beyond the cycle.
Praying actually heals my character in fantasy games, instead of just killing my polio-afflicted children.
>there are healsluts out there who don't thank God for every rope of alpha-tank cum that flings across their faces, despite being atheists irl
commit to public service and convert these heathens
Elegan/tg/entleman here to tell you you're being silly user, the entire point of roleplaying is to be something you're not.
This is why you see smelly hamplanets roleplaying an elf seductress, or the meek geek everyone bullies becoming a champion of justice, or the dull as fuck guy trying to roleplay a suave party face type of character, etc.
One of the best storytimes to come out of /tg/, Shadowrun Storytime by TwoDee had one player being a grimdark black mage simply cause he's a churchgoing goody-two shoes and wanted to see what the big deal was with being evil.
If anything the true annoyance of an atheist in a tabletop setting is the one fedora fucktard who brings his atheist beliefs into a game where Gods are legit forces of good/evil in the game.
>Paladin uses lay-on-hands, grated to him by his belief on his deity to heal atheist fucktard
>Said fucktard begins his usual speech about gods not existing and how the Paladin does that by secretly having learned it from a wizzard and lying to everyone to get them into his cult.
I'm an atheist but I think many religions are very inspiring and interesting, both real and fantasy ones
>Said fucktard begins his usual speech about gods not existing and how the Paladin does that by secretly having learned it from a wizzard and lying to everyone to get them into his cult.
I kinda wanna play a character like this now.
>Try to pray the boners away at the confession booth
>Can hear them feverishly masturbating on the other side while I explain the importance of not straying too far from your healer during battles in Satan's dungeons
Omnipotent isn't a thing but loving, powerful Gods? There are lots of them. Matter can only be combined in so many ways before those combinations repeat.
Ive told my friends multiple times that if satan were real and offered dark powers they'd be fucked and hope they arent in my house when the blood sacrifices happen.
Evil or not theres always a draw to playing an ironclad knight whos mission is serving a higher power and channelling sheer awesome into their enemies. What sorta faggot doesnt enjoy deus vult?
>If anything the true annoyance of an atheist in a tabletop setting is the one fedora fucktard who brings his atheist beliefs into a game where Gods are legit forces of good/evil in the game.
The SJWs at Anet did this in Guild Wars 2. They spent the entirety of Guild Wars building up The Gods and guys that worship them called Paragons (Paladins) and in Guild Wars 2 the new Paragons get their holy abilities just like your greentext. It made me fucking cringe all over the place.
Because in real life believing in a god serves no other purpose but to alleviate the fear of death.
In videogames being a paladin/leveling faith serves the purpose of giving you superhuman powers/fucking lightning arrows
>Because in real life believing in a god serves no other purpose but to alleviate the fear of death.
I hope you never cross a zealot.
You have an idealized view of religion that the real world does not fulfill, the idea of playing as a genuinely religious person is fun because in the real world religion rarely goes beyond social conventions and rituals.
>mfw this thread
>I don't believe in God, but I sure love killing shit in the name of faith!
Sounds like you people are salty were born in the wrong generation, at least back then it was considered cool
>while allowing all sort of fucked up shit happen to people.
But what if the people that die/suffer get a free Heaven ticket?
>tfw you will never go on a holy crusade with your fellow men because you're promised a small plot of land for it
>tfw you will never march for days on end to the holy land
>tfw you will never get to slay the saracens in glorious, PTSD-inducing combat
>tfw you will never die of an infection on your way to the holy land
Because role playing is fun. You don't play D&D to play as yourself unless you're an idiot. You okay D&D to play as whoever the fuck you want, and someone you could never be in real life.
From a Lawful Evil Gnome to a Chaotic Good Barbarian Half-Orc to a Lawful Good Paladin, all offer fun and unique ways to role play you could never be like in real life.
I dunno I've been an atheist forever but I've been going to mass just to have something to do. Catholics RP way better than proteshits. Better level design and sound engineering too
If a god came to earth and said whoever partook in their holy war would be granted strength I'd join in a heartbeat desu. Unless it's a Jew or Islamic god.
Another aspect is that perhaps religious people take their belief too seriously to play around with it, so to speak. At least in the privacy of an RP group, atheists don't have any reason to treat religion with the respect its adherents think it deserves.
...
seriously though, maybe not the bible but the popular mythology like the warrior looking angels with armor that started in the renaissance are sick as shit, and the popular image of the red devil with hoofs and horns is cool as fuck
if we're going by the bible, what he actually gives you is eternal boredom in the form of endless worship in heaven with him, other people and angels and shit like that.
White Knighting. Paladin seems to be mostly played by betas who don't understand how to be a Paladin. Which is sad because a good Paladin can easily wind up becoming Team Dad.
Same. I honestly wonder how I'm gonna explain beating YHVH up when it's time for judgment.
>sorry, God, it's just chinese cartoons
>Unless it's a Jew or Islamic god.
You've just excluded Christianity too, m8.
>the light is the exact same as any of the 3628 religions currently practiced on this planet
>muh religion is the right one because mommy and daddy said so and they have been alive for 30000 years
>you cant play a mage in vidyagames unless you believe that magic is a real life thing
Shit bait thread kike
