Well, its a peer-to-peer (speak: person2person) network, so unlike usual sites like megaupload which always upload at the same speed, the amount of people using the same torrent "stream" the download for you
So if no ones downloading (therefor uploading) the torrent, you cant aswell

Not exactly. To download a torrent you need a client aka software like utorrent or BitTorrent.
When your download is finished and you leave the client running and the download intact you seed it, kind of like uploading it. The more seeders the faster a torrent downloads. Don't know the exact specifics but that's the gist of seeding.
Leeching is when you delete the download or never leave the client running after you're done .You're not contributing to the "community" so to speak and it actively, though in a small scale, hurts the torrent.

most sites that sell apples have many apples on a server that everyone can pull the apples from
torrenting uses p2p so that means there is no server
one person has the apple and makes a few copies of it and shares the copies
the people downloading the copies of the apples get the apple in slices
once the first slice is done, that person is now sharing that slice for everyone who wants it as a copy
he is still getting more apple slices(leeching) and the more he gets the more he can share(seeding)
now he finally has a full apple and he shared enough slices someone else got an apple and those people are sharing too
now it wouldnt be that effective if that was everything
now you have your apple and your eating it, you can share a full copy of the apple
i usually share an apple i get 5 times and i quit
that way i took 1 apple but made 5 and if everyone does this the torrent is healthy and a fast download
if everyone just gets their slices and leaves without letting people copy it then the torrent is unhealthy and slow and will eventually die
