You can choose where to spawn, I started in Emerald so Firered was just on the side to me. They also said they are changing the base rom to the ds because the gba roms are garbage

Honestly, I thought it was gay as fuck too but after playing I actually really like it. It adds and extra layer to catching and evaluating pokemon. Especially since in this game you can buy and sell pokemon to other players, catching or breeding a good pokemon with perfect or near perfect EVs is like hitting the jackpot. It's really fun, it also encourages catching multiple of the same pokemon to find the strongest one you can.

Seems unlikely, since gen 5 isn't gen 1. But it's why they added gen 1 first. It's why you put gen 1 in to make the game a success, and demote gen 5 to additional optional content. But then you knew that.

You can play through the story as normal.
