This game aged like milk, right?

This game aged like milk, right?

I tried really hard to play it but end up dropping the ball at moonside: The story isn't that great, dialogues are simple and extra short, characters are blands, and everything is slowed by intense session of xp farming. I don't get it.
I want to say that I had no problem with others rpg like ff6 or chrono trigger, with earthbound I dunno.
Even fucking pokemon seems to have more depth.

Where's the masterpiece I was promised by the nintenbros? Is mother 3 acceptable or am I going to suffer the same?

Music and art is great tho. Still not enough to keep me playing.

The combat is pretty shit but it's a pretty charming game with good writing. Music is GOAT and it's just an overall pleasant game to look at and listen to.

>Where's the masterpiece I was promised by the nintenbros?
Who said earthbound was a masterpiece? There are a million better RPGs on SNES.

I think the charm of the game is still great as ever. That's the appeal of the game. It does last too long though. It should be a 15-20 hour game but instead its 30-40 hours long.

Yeah I'm sorry, people were probably talking about mother 3 then.

I'm going to watch the plot with some walktrough and start m3 on gba.

It's one of my favorite games ever made but I agree with It's not for everyone.

Do try mother 3 though, it is quite different and the battle system is a bit more refined.

it's not a terribly strong rpg but it's noteworthy for trying to be different in a sea of sameness.

i personally never had a grinding issue though i found that by the end of the game outside of ness everyone was getting one-shotted by party wide attacks resulting in quite a bit of luck but not enough to prevent me beating the final boss in only a few attempts once i figured out what i was supposed to do.

jrpg as a whole aged like shit, they were liked just because of presentation and length

The characters are certainly bland and the story isn't some masterwork, don't go into it expecting FF6 or Chrono Trigger. But it's very unique, presents many interesting locations, scenarios, and funny NPC dialogue and stuff, and it really feels like a big adventure. And it's pretty fucking long.
I'd say Earthbound and Mother 3 are two extremes. Earthbound is about a grand adventure and Mother 3 is about story, and they're both lacking in the other.

This, fucking this and the " you narrowly missed your target " drove me insane.

Why does nes miss so much + the homesick gimmick forcing you to call your mother every two seconds. What the fuck.

oh, i figured that out. there is what appears to be a really strong baseball bat that significantly ups your chance to miss found around mid-game.

i think the developers put that in to troll people who don't inspect items before they use them.

to add to this i looked it up

Casey Bat
Description: Ness can equip this weapon. You can't help but swing this bat with all your might. There's a good chance that you may just whiff.

Offense +125
Misses 75% of the time

>Weapon and body armor have uninteresting descriptions
>let's troll people who don't like to struggle in this hellish inventory to read uninteresting stuff.
>also let's not allow people to have access to the description of an item before buying cuz lmao

looks like it's obtained from a boss drop so it's likely a troll item since you don't actually have to buy it.

copied from a wiki:

The Casey Bat is a weapon in EarthBound. It is obtained after defeating Master Barf in Deep Darkness, and can be equipped by Ness. The Casey Bat is named after the baseball poem, "Casey at the Bat; A Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year 1888". The bat's stats are heavily linked to the context of this poem.

It increases Ness' Offense stat by 125, making it the strongest overall of his weapons, but will only hit 25% of the time under normal circumstances. However, its accuracy and the chance of it scoring SMAAAASH!! hits increases as Ness' party members are knocked out, and while fighting opponents much stronger than the party. In addition, if used directly from the inventory, its accuracy is increased.

While appearing largely useless, the Casey Bat is useful in getting Instant Wins while not necessarily being at the required level. This proves helpful in instances such as retrieving items with a 1/128 chance of appearing (e.g. Starman Super and the Sword of Kings).

If you use the Casey Bat or Yo-Yos you're doing it wrong.

They suck balls.

>complaining about muh grinding
If you had to grind long enough for it to become a problem then you must be a fucking casual, plain and simple.

It saddens me that people get memed into thinking this is some sort of best-game-ever and end up dropping it when they realize it's not. It's actually a pretty good game.

I remember using the Casey Bat on my very first playthrough and wondering why Ness was sucking so much dick. The minute I found another bat, I equipped it and wonder why I was weaker but hitting everything like normal.

I send it to Tracy the minute I get it.

You can't say a game aged like milk when the game was already woefully outdated compared to its contemporaries

Alright, nes and pink use the yoyo. But there's nothing in the desc warning me about the hitrate.

I don't mind grinding if it happen when the story became interesting. Maybe I just left at the wrong moment and mindblowing stuff was about to hit the fan. I left after moonside. Was it a mistake?

second half of the game is better than the first i think, i took a solid year break at moonside then continued until end of the game just recently.

Earthbound is in a weird spot where at the time it came out certain aspects were very new while at the same time it has aspects that are archaic by today's standards. The battle system is kinda dumb, the difficulty curve is REALLY weird, but the setting is great, and it just has little quirks and stuff that can be both charming and frustrating. The inventory is interesting in how you can carry random worthless shit and not realize that it's worthless and not to mention the money and saving system.

If they made a game with Earthbound's setting and vibe but with a Mario & Luigi / Paper Mario battle system it'd be incredible.
