Localizer said “I don’t think it’s right to make any change, no matter how minor, for the purpose of ‘sanitizing’ a game.”
>Lipschultz wrote in an XSEED forum post, had to do with a parody of the Japanese light switch company NKK Switches. A sign in the original Japanese version of the game read “KKK witches,” a play on the phrase. He wrote on XSEED’s forum, “I personally felt ‘KKK witches’ was pretty funny for its shock value, but when I mentioned it to my coworkers, they... were not as amused.” Lipschultz has long been an advocate against what he sees as censorship in localization, and he says his priority is retaining as much of Akiba’s Beat’s original meaning as possible.
seems like XSEED is just another victim of "localization"
Tyler Hernandez
It was kind of a dumb choice on Japan's part. It could have be WKK or TKK or anything like that.
Brayden Gomez
people who whine about every little localization change in a game are just as bad as those who whine for a something to be censored.
Xavier Cooper
Nah that's stupid.
Nolan Parker
Only Sup Forums would actually welcome the original joke.
Carter Moore
>Change the meaning of a statement entirely, depriving people not playing in the original language and understanding it a part of the experience >This is somehow acceptable 1 or 2 here and there are fine, but when you are changing dozens of things visual or written to make it "safe," there's a serious problem.
Jason Bailey
This is the dumbest fucking shit. They didn't remove costumes or change the intended meaning of the dialogue. The Japanese devs made a parody of a company and made it an abbreviation for an American white supremacist group. Unless the intended meaning was to invoke the Klu Klux Klan specifically there's nothing wrong with changing the abbreviation so the intended meaning doesn't get confused.
Is the Japanese language being censored by making it English here?
Evan Fisher
Well after their refusal to give me subs they can go fuck themselves I hope akiba's beat kills them .
Ian Price
When every change gets people as triggered as the those that they claim to be against, they then just the same problem but on the other side of the spectrum.
Thomas Martin
The parody wasn't supposed to be referring to any racial supremacy groups though, it was a parody of a company that ended up with an abbreviation that brought up very different connotations in the West. The meaning would change more if it was left as is.
Oliver Roberts
>Japan should tip toe around America's nigger shit history No.
Jordan Flores
> A reference to a group of white supremacists > Is somehow going to confuse people playing a weeaboo videogame Imagine being this dumb
Gabriel Robinson
>localizer asks to be removed from game's credits
I don't understand. Usually it's the localizers who fuck up everything. Are they saying the original Japanese devs removed "KKK Witches" from even the Japanese version, and now the localizer wants to take its name off the game?
Brody Murphy
Have you actually read his posts on the XSeed forums? He's literally recusing himself over the most innocuous bullshit imaginable all because of his self-righteous stance about "censorship".
Matthew Thomas
What a scummy misleading title.
William Hall
Honestly this is the one case where changing it is the correct thing, because leaving it as-is inadvertently introduces a new joke not found in the original.
I don't get why this guy has to fall on his sword for this.
Jace Hall
Reminder they wasted millions of dollars in this game that didn't even chart and failed so hard in Japan.
Nathan Jackson
Yes, no one could possibly think of the KKK due to the abbreviation.
Joshua Sanchez
You must be pretty fucking dumb to think of the ku klux klan when KKK comes up in a japanese anime videogame.
Isaiah Ross
Maybe he just wants a reason to leave.
Juan Clark
This single guy on the localization team wanted his name removed from the credits because he didn't agree with the changes the publisher decided to go with. The original Japanese version was untouched.
Eli Thompson
>inadvertently introduces a joke
(Source Needed) unless you were in the writer's board meeting during the Japanese development of the game.
Jaxson Garcia
Please, by all means, what is the first thing you think of when you hear the letters KKK?
Angel Richardson
everytime xseed drama popsup, I recall when a bunch of angry trannies got the PR guy booted cause he defended the term "traps" in akiba beat
Gavin Richardson
Depending on the context of the videogame I'm playing it might be the abbreviation to something else Do you think of nazis when you see a swastika?
Ayden Baker
>I speak for all non-bigots
Brody Wright
That's not a swastika though you mong, it's a manja.
Samuel Myers
keep shaking those tiny hands, you can't do anything to stop people from erasing your hate symbols :^)
Chase Wood
To be perfectly honest? Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo.
Xavier Barnes
i play multiplayer japanese games meant for children and teens and type the n-word into chat.
i don't enjoy the games or understand japanese.
am i part of the problem?
Julian Martinez
>tfw they will fire Tom He's based as fuck, just a little autistic.
Blake Jones
How much autism do you have to have to care this much about a single sign in a video game
Gabriel Brown
That is DEFINITELY a svastika.
Robert Sanders
...
Joseph Morgan
Yes, because like any normal person my mind will automatically go to the thing it is most known for, which is Nazis.
>Being against the incessant whining of muh censorship faggots means I'm an SJW back to Sup Forums you faggot.
Cameron Sanchez
I thought it was mildly clever.
Brayden Howard
It's an ura manji, retard.
Nathaniel Richardson
They're drawn differently, retard.
Ayden Williams
Well yeah being Pro-censorship is a pretty SJW thing nowadays.
Logan Brown
This
Xseed would have joined the list of notorious white supremacists that have made such vile jokes like Dave Chappelle for example, just makes me sick
Ethan Thompson
associations and connotation are built from culture
most people in the united states will associate with the nazi symbol
Aaron Powell
some hardcore leftist furry i follow who never talked to but i find it amusing how he thinks he is btfo-ing rightwingers with his tweets
Asher Allen
(((localization)))
Jaxon Rodriguez
Probably some Twitter tranny.
Jeremiah Gray
You misunderstand. It was intentional.
Eli Anderson
Shitting on people who complain about every little change in a game is not being pro censorship, it's being anti whiner.
Jeremiah Bailey
>some hardcore leftist furry i follow
Christian Hall
Yeah because i!m not a drumpfscum
Robert Phillips
alright, so was the "kkk" an actual reference to the black hating kind or something in japan land?
Benjamin Morales
Nah you sound pretty pro-censorship.
Cooper Miller
KKK = Philippine revolutionaries
Andrew Sanchez
>I don't particularly care about the issue, but I'll make damn sure everybody knows I'm on the "right side" :^) Wow, so brave
Jose Evans
Was the KKK thing intentional in the original version or not?
Cooper Richardson
Nigga, this isn't the first time Tom fought for something in Xseed, and it surly won't be his last time.
Cooper Thompson
>muh horseshoe theory same coin different side ur triggered too hurr durr durr Nah fuck you
Owen Young
Wanting to eliminate all the jews isn't anti-0semitic, It's pro-zero-intrest-rate.
Jacob Hernandez
Kajiri Kamui Kagura
Liam Allen
>caring about localization instead of importing and Akiba's Beat is shit anyway
Asher Fisher
...
Kayden Reyes
>making jokes or references to the KKK is supporting them Then every edgy performer like Marilyn Manson is a Nazi for dressing like one
Christopher Lee
Fucking Indians and Chinese what a bunch of Nazis.
Jaxson Bell
If I were to imagine anyone "stomping their feet and shaking their tiny hands", I would imagine the literal thousands of "NOT MY PRESIDENT" people who rioted and refuse to accept reality, piss and moan at literally anything Trump does, spanning from extreme shit like wall to innocuous things like the annual White House Easter Egg Roll.
Brody Anderson
Well then it's settled Lets replace all japanese food references for hamburguers and french fries because that's what americans think off when they see food
Aaron Gonzalez
Japan probably doesn't even know what KKK is desu
Evan Anderson
Xseed is dying, they can't afford his antics anymore
Nicholas Phillips
>They were not amused.
Have you ever been so broken that even goofy idiot jokes make you mad?
Samuel Diaz
>when I mentioned it to my coworkers, they... were not as amused.”
easily offended faggets should not be working in localisation
Evan Bennett
Except people know what Japanese food is. The "KKK" abbreviation isn't a Japanese cultural thing, it's just random letters put together to parody NKK.
Benjamin James
No, it has another meaning but XSEED is afraid of letters so they wanted it changed.
It would be a bit like wanting to change the name of the demon Isis in Persona/Megaten games because it could also mean something else in a totally different context.
Easton Perry
No. The sign in the game was for a company called "KKK Witches", a parody of the real-life Japanese company, NKK Switches. It's pretty much the same thing as some anime parodying McDonald's by changing it to WcDonald's.
Owen Barnes
At least I know it is KKK witches now
Aiden Gray
The place where I buy my groceries.
Lincoln Walker
The headline makes it out like the KKK sign was an actual reference to the kukluxklan, which it wasnt in anyway
tom is going to get made out like hes defending white supremency shit now, undeserved
Jace Kelly
>wow a gay bug chasing fat balding furry that shits in diapers is trying to speak ill of other people.
Zachary Ramirez
In the original, the joke was basically just an off-brand version of "NKK," a light bulb manufacturer based in Akihabara. Nothing to do with the Klu Klux Klan. When they emailed the devs, they pretty much just said, "hey, KKK is a well known hate group in america," and with nothing more than that, the next build the devs sent XSeed had the abbreviation changed to something else.
Chase Johnson
I remember reading Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock didn't know what the KKK was until he did some heavy research. I want to go back to those times.
Connor Nguyen
So couldn't they just change it to MKK or something?
Dylan Campbell
>Let me just ignore him and be a smart ass, surely that will mean I'm right.
Zachary Peterson
that's not what association is
its more like americans first think of hamburgers and french fries when someone asks him to name food
Brody Phillips
The idea of witches in the KKK is pretty funny though.
Ian Stewart
Having any abbreviation like that at all won't satisfy all of these dumb faggots. They're too dumb to look into it and realise that it has nothing to do with the KKK, politics, Drumpf or the US at all.
Oliver Ward
I'll admit it was an odd choice on their part.
Julian Price
>Lipschultz
David Wilson
>let me just pretend I'm not him and dismiss all your posts and be a smart ass, surely it will mean I'm right
Jaxon Hall
They could have, the the jap devs just gave them the other thing without their input, from the looks of it.
Hudson Mitchell
Just popping in to say there was nothing wrong with the name being changed and Tom is acting like a faggot. They simply changed the name because it's a reference that has a different meaning in the US that is offensive. It's simple localization.
Ayden Morales
XSEED would have wanted it changed anyway.
Nathaniel Price
Japanese version still has KKK witches.
He asked to have his name removed because back during the senran shit he said he would do that if xseed ever actually censored a title. as minor and almost accidental as this was, it is still censorship so he's making good. That said he didn't know acquire did the change without being asked to before putting in the request but what's done is done.
Brandon Cook
it would've been "censorship" in Tom's mind.
Brayden Nguyen
My nigga
Ian Ramirez
Speaking of KKK why do they have titles like Grand master dragon or supreme wizard or shit like that? Do they also larp during their meetings or something?
Carter Morris
Why is Tom such a retard?
Landon Collins
Yeah, the localizers ended up changing it to ACQ Witches.
Jayden Gutierrez
i know, is hilarious following these people on twitter, don't interact with them, just sit back and see them foam their mouths.
Is gonna be 4 wonderful years
Brayden Phillips
It is censorship, whether you agree with it or not.
Xavier Carter
They're not as bad as the people that complain about the people that defend their right to complain.
Camden Price
That's stupid though. They created a pun in a game full of stupid puns and it just coincidentally was referred to as KKK.
You don't see niggers boycotting basic Bio classes over these things do you? The intent wasn't there, so this whole fiasco is completely on XSEED and to a lesser extent, Tom.
Zachary Robinson
Kotaku has to spin something for clicks man. clickbait title and misleading article to foster some arguing in the comments for return views.
Brandon Howard
Shemale witches especially, eh?
Cameron Williams
Not him but no it's not, it would be censorship if the meaning was changed. If anything changing the title actually preserves the original meaning. If the devs were specifically referring to the Ku Klux Klan it would be a different story but they weren't.
