So I have never played a Final Fantasy game and I'm always confused every couple years when a new one comes out. Apparently it used to be an actual fantasy game series, and it had turn based combat, but now it has modern characters and settings, also it's no longer turn based, yes?

It seems like, much like Fallout, this series is losing more of its RPG elements as time goes on, and is becoming more of a GTA-esque action adventure thing. The latest one looks like fantasy GTA to me.

I long for a return to medieval-fantasy, where a peasant goes from scrubbing goats' asses to saving the world. FFXI was the last time they really nailed it.

FF1 was a middling DQ1 clone that did a few things right but a lot of shot wrong, 2 was the flawed prototype for SaGa, 3 is the blandest RPG ever, 4 is a hand holding narrative experience with a shit story, etc. 5, 6 and 7 was the franchise's peak, and even then they were just pretty good RPGs with several flaws. There's stuff worth experiencing throughout the franchise, especially the music and art, but people who think it was ever some kind of shining achievement of JRPGs needs a reality check.

Hell, even for the first FFCC Yamauchi himself asked him very politely if he would please make a FF game for the GC, that he did, but he quickly lost interest as the series went on, he just doesn't seem to like working with Nintendo for some reason.

So games 1 through 5? FF6 was hardly "traditional" fantasy and even as far back as FF1 they've featured science fiction elements. They made the first 7 games in 10 years. It took them 20 more years to push out another 8 mainline titles. So what's your definition of the "original games?"

Save in quality. The last good Final Fantasy was released in 2002. The only hopeful project in the foreseeable future is a remake of the most selling title in this franchise released in 1997.

Man it's optional. You don't even need it to break the game and be insanely powerful. It's just something to give the game a reason to speedrun it the next time with real ingame satisfaction if you manage to do it.

Final fantasy for me was always a journey trough a fantasy world. Not some fallout 4 tier shit map. Even witcher 3 has more diversity with the locations you can visit.

No they deemed a fucking AAA game which in this case was TR at 3m to be underperforming because that objectively is for an AAA game underperforming, then it sold 6m a year later then 8m further on and they said it exceeded their expectations.
