Is it that bad? I played FF 1-7 already and was planning on playing this one, but I heard it was incredibly flawed gameplay-wise. What's so bad about it?

It's terrible and the second worst game in the series.
But if you made it through II, you can make it through VIII.
No,stop listening to Spoonyfags.
I love 8 personally, the junction system is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it and Triple Triad is goat minigame. The story is nothing to write home about, though.
The story is shit.
The gameplay is shit.
Triple Triad is fun.
That is all you need to know.
It depends what you like. If you like childish characters like in most FF games, then 8 might not be for you.
You're right, the characters are so stupid that calling them childish would be an insult to children.
>The gameplay is shit.
ok buddy
Rinoa is a grade A slut that ruined the game for me. She admits to fucking your dickhole rival in a fling and feeling hurt and used by him. She literally asks you to comfort her as her second choice and gives you the whole "what matters is that I'm with you now" spiel.
Anyone who thinks this makes a good story is pictured on the left in pic related.
>He doesn't understand the characters so they are stupid
Typical retard that loves FF games.
play until the second disc
>I played FF 1-7
You'll have no problem with 8 or 9 if you managed to stomach 1-7.
He's not wrong. Junctioning is about as fun and interesting as a root canal.
>junction system is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it
how do i get the hang of it
turn tents into curagas within the first hour.
Is that chuggaaconroy?
If you got this far you might as well play it. Best summons, best optional content, best town, one of the best FF OSTs, best minigame.
why? what else should i do
It gets you 3500 HP right away. You can also play the card game for the Quistis card and turn it into Triple magic and get 255 attack on all your characters as soon as you beat the first SeeD mission.
When you put it that way, it does have several outstanding qualities. I think I ended up resenting the lack of cohesion in the world design, but even that lends to the dreamlike quality of the game.
... like, on paper, I felt "should" dislike the game, but for some reason I want to play it again ahead of VII / IX. Anyway, VIII is cool enough. Most of the Final Fantasy entries are worth at least one solid playthrough to see what the fuck the games try to do.
FF8 is fantastic.
The story is interesting. The environment work is incredible. They put a lot of work into drawing great backgrounds for your characters to exist in. They started really getting into animated backgrounds around this time so you can see the extent of their work translates well into 2017. The soundtrack is probably the greatest to grace a Final Fantasy. Clearly Uematsu's finest work. I still listen to the piano version every once and awhile. It's extremely comfy: youtube.com
The downsides to this game is that summons are long and that gets annoying. The junction system is very interesting in that it can break the game very quickly if you use it right. I view this more as a pro, but most intelligent gamers don't get to enjoy the struggle of this game when they trivialize it with good junctions and abuse abilities like "Card" to give you high level spells early in the game, giving your level 15 character something like 4000 HP or so.
This is SquareSoft's finest work.
The ending gave me the spooks back then
It's probably my least favorite of the "Golden Era" Final Fantasies, but I'd still recommend checking it out at least once. If you liked FF7 you might like 8 as it has a few things in common i.e the main protags are very similar. The battle system can take some getting used to though. People seem to really like triple triad for some reason.
Remember to drop the series once you've finished FF10, as you are missing nothing of value beyond it.
>This is SquareSoft's finest work.
Uhh, let's not get too ahead of ourselves; I'll defend FF8 until the end of time, but it's not even Square's best game on the PSX. That honor belongs to Einhander.
...
>mfw quistis is only 18
The junction mechanic is really powerful and If you spend hours reading guides and know a massive amount about the game before you even start playing, you can break the game and become ridiculously, unbeatably powerful on disc 1.
So, I mean, don't read those guides.
I know it's a JRPG and all, but how much time until the game actually starts? It looks like it'll be at least 30 mins of cutscenes and dialogue
Its one of those games where you don't know until you try. Some people don't like it, others love it. I personally really love the game, it has flaws yes, but the OST, the world and characters, and loads of story moments make it worth it.
nigga what? what planet do you come from? 8 was awesome but fuck me Triple Triad was the most boring, pointless, insufferable shit that everyone skips every time.
You're not confusing it for Square Enix's Playonline Triple Triad multiplayer card game (that was part of FFXI) are you?
These.
triple triad is fun tho
Quistis is the reason I ended up having a fetish for long boots, short skirts, blonde hair and glasses
This. It's customization possibilities are pretty far reaching. Can basically create your own custom character classes. Squall as a melee is kinda OP though. If you want to play the game and have a challenge play with a full mage party or create dedicated roles for each party member (tank, healer, DPS)
I could just never get into it and never found it fun to play. Some of the rules in it were backwards as fuck and it encouraged savescumming. It's the only optional content in the game I always skipped to be honest, but to each their own.
Did Spoony off himself yet?
