Why did VR for gaming flop?
Why did VR for gaming flop?
Not a lot of people have the equipment or the proper space to use it. Not a lot of developers know what to do with it, so you just get boring, rudimentary shit.
too expensive
no games
already segmentation and exclusive titles when the platform hasn't even taken off yet
a pain in the ass to set up
lots of reasons
the most fun i had with my vive was in CM3D2.
not enough loli games
No major support from developers
>no games
>already segmentation and exclusive titles when the platform hasn't even taken off yet
I agree with these.
Lack of games that are actually games instead of "x simulator" that gets boring after ten minutes.
The only thing I can think off the top of my head that's worth playing in VR is RE7, but it's not mandatory.
Literally one game senpai.
I don't want to knock shit over in my apartment
It seems to be growing in Japan with arcades opening and developers there making games for it. Since they actually care about video games over there.
gimmick shit never fucking lasts and the industry will never learn this
Mabye I don't want to spend the money I worked so hard for over a technology that's still expensive as fuck and underdeveloped. Also the only thing that I have found appealing is Google TiltBrush.
>build $2000 pc
>im supposed to be impressed by wii-looking shit
Pass
Technology came too early. It hasn't had much time to develop but game developers were too much in a hurry to try to get into the "next big thing".
>he actually saved his image again to avoid getting archive searched by filename which would reveal he constantly uses the same image to make retarded threads
madman
>creating threads on other boards to post off topic
sup barneyfag
maybe because it was wasted on dumb shit like nu-resident evil.
They didn't make a lewd Kanna sim
It was always a meme though
Technology is still too young and expensive. The only people who can really use it are those with very powerful PCs. There's also PSVR but those still cost more than a PS4 would and its garbage because of underpowered hardware, seems like Sony is already abandoning it.
There is also no killer app that really gives people a good reason to buy into it either.
It didn't? Have you seen the amount of people that bought a Vive? It's only beginning.
>doesn't know about image hash searches
newfriend
>gimmick
>beta (or even alfa) stages of technology
>expensive
>setting up the equipment is a hassle
>VR "games" are basically overpriced tech demos
>if game tries too much it can easily give you motion sickness
Give it more time. Much more time.
this
It seems like a waste making all this vr stuff that just doesn't take off. Sony should have learned their lessson on making dumb extra stuff a long time ago with the eye thing. Move was only good for No More Heroes and House of the Dead.
It's taken a beating, but once someone manufactures a cheaper way the industry will go crazy
$800+ A system that can run it all to play glorified minigames
Are there any VR games where I can finally be a cute little girl?
Because you keep posting anime on the wrong fucking board.
There's some petty cool VR games like Raw Data and Arizona Sunshine. And for racing games, after you try driving with a wheel and a VR headset on even a triple screen setup seems like pleb shit.
Source: Rift owner. As a simracing guy it's been well worth my money.
I also use it regularly for custom maid 3D, which gives me the best faps
I do agree that we need a "killer" app, possibly a shooter with a decently lengthy singleplayer campaign that isn't just wave shooting. Arizona sunshine is kind of that but it also honestly isn't.
dumb animeposter
You'd think differently if you actually played it in VR and didn't start the series with REmake like a newb.
Seriously, RE7 in VR was great. It had flaws but for being the first released AAA developed VR game Capcom did fucking wonders. It captured so many sensations I had from the 90's when I first played RE1 and RE2.
Because VR for porn is great
Its a shame its locked behind a highly inferior VR headset.
Best monogatari is getting a VR game
Can't discount waifu simulation
The thing is that to play RE7 in VR on the PC you need a shitty hack that doesn't even work properly, so the only way to play it properly in VR is in the PS4. But PSVR is kind of rubbish compared to the PC alternatives.
>Oh shit yeah we're getting official Shinobu in VR, finally my life will be comp--
>PSVR
into the trash
You can't even fuck the vampire
VR for porn was better.
Nips didn't make doujin hentai for it.
I agree, it's real shitty that it's locked on PSVR for a year. If you haven't played it yet I recommend waiting until then. At least by then there will be two new DLC to play as well though and maybe a bundled version.
Because they haven't figured out good movement yet. Provided you even have a controller for the thing, walking in VR just feels awkward and unsettling, since "you" are moving but your body is not. Some devs try and circumvent this problem with that dumb "point to somewhere and teleport there" gimmick, but that's incredibly restrictive and arguably more confusing. As someone who isn't huge on vr but uses it occasionally, I can say that I have the best experiences when I'm stationary, even when it's something as mundane as watching vr /gif/ porn or using the Netflix app (that shit's great by the way, comfiest way to watch anything). When you're stationary, your visual perception matches your physical perception, and doesn't cause the same disconnect as when you're moving one way or the other.
Here's my list of proposed concepts for making VR vidya a thing
>some sort of Phoenix Wright styled legal drama, where you spend most of your time either on a small crime scene investigating evidence or in the court room during a trial
>any sort of racing game
>flight simulators (seriously how the fuck has no one done this yet)
>a kind of shooter where you're either in a tank or in a turret most of the time
>some kind of game show game, where visuals and interaction play a big part (I'm sure the You Don't Know Jack guys could think up something fun)
And my personal preference
>a mech shooter game where you control it from the cockpit and have to use various controls to make it go
Some of these definitely don't have what it take to be full retail games, they might work better in some sort of mini game collection or as little 99cent apps. Overall, I think VR has a lot of potential in terms of games, and I think it has a bright future, but it won't get there until devs start making real, high quality games that aren't just butchered ports of existing games, and until they start making mechanics to fit VR, rather than struggling to make VR fit existing mechanics.
Two reasons.
>expensive equipment
and
>no one wants to wear stupid shit on their head
>tfw you didn't fall for the VR maymay
>VR
>Gaming
>Flop
>Headsets still only on the first generation and barely a year old at this point
Pretty sure Flight Simulator X has VR support, and so does War Thunder and DCS.
>requires pricey hardware people don't already have
>requires a decent amount of space that a lot of people don't have
>difficult to market to normies
>no killer app
i don't know why the VR hype train got as big as it did last year, without a major killer app or a fucking brilliant and massive marketing campaign to get the normies to buy in, there was never any chance VR could become more than a niche market for the time being.
maybe in another ~5 years if they can continue to improve the tech and get the cost down to something close to impulse-buy levels, then VR might start to take off. but the way things look right now it's just as likely that VR will get dropped by the industry for another decade and we'll try again later. eventually one of these times they'll actually get it to catch on, but people who thought this time was going to be it were being foolishly optimistic.
>no one wants to wear stupid shit on their head
People said that about headphones too but nowadays if you play games using speakers you are labelled as actually braindead, and with good reason.
Why are people this autistic? Who cares what you're wearing as long as you're getting enjoyment out of it? Anyone that has tried a VR headset can tell you that a virtual world is much more memorable, meaningful and enjoyable when looking at it through VR instead of a traditional monitor. There just aren't more than a handful of games that are actually worth it (have actual longevity), at present.
>People said that about headphones too
No one ever said that about headphones.
nice leddit meme
also I've been playing this game since most this board was still shitting their huggies. 7 was fucking lame. Maybe the only cool part was fighting Jack. That was it though.
There's many autists that will give you shit for using headphones outdoors.
imagine how much money they could make
The VR consoles had terrible mechanics, an abysmal library, and it wasn't really virtual reality but more of motion controls with a monitor uncomfortably attached to your face.
People have been wearing them since the days of the fucking walkman. Stop talking shit.
>he doesn't have a surround sound gaming office
i guess if you live in a dorm room or something then headphones would make more sense, but if you have a house then i don't know why anybody would want to use headphones unless they're trying to avoid microphone feedback.
I don't think anyone in the gaming scene thought gen 1 VR headsets were anything but a way to kickstart a VR industry. Which considering the combined Vive, Oculus and PSVR sales, has already been done. Now devs need to actually make good stuff. The market is saturated with "my first unity project" and
Surround sound echoes through the walls and shit and alters the general acoustics and soundstage. No thanks.
I might consider it if I had soundproof walls to stop the sound bouncing around but that shit's expensive yo.
What about those cardboard vr/vrbox for phone?
What can you do with them?
any way to use them on pc?
Sooo... Has anyone had to deal with fixing/replacing vive controllers?
Housemate brought some friends over to show them the VR experience, they had some drink in them and my housemate just threw them in Brookhaven Experiment without explaining much. Lots of punching and arm swinging was involved and the strap on one of the controllers broke and the controller went full speed into the ground. It was one of the original infamous grey straps. Doesn't track no more, all the buttons seem to work just no tracking.
I was reading about it and it sounds like HTC don't want to replace or repair them under the warranty in situations like that. But surely because it was the strap that broke it's their responsibility? On the other hand though, the controller has fallen and has hit the walls before and there are multiple marks on it from damage. One time it fell when my housemate wasn't using the straps, and hitting walls just sometimes happen with inexperienced players especially.
Or should I just say fuck it and open up the controller and try fixing it myself? Seems like a common fix is just making sure the ribbon cables are hooked up okay.
1. Expensive
2. People don't like having shit attached to their face
3. A lot of people don't have the fucking space in their house to fit the VR area
4. Doesn't do anything interesting, the novelty wears off and then...
5. You're left with a bunch of really shitty VR games
6. No good games, porn games are literally the highlight
A screen on your face that serves as a sort of freelook camera doesn't do anything for games, for interactivity. In fact, the stiffness, tunnel vision, the fact that nearly all games leave you stationary only make it a massive source of limitations for gameplay. It's nowhere near the level of "immersion" to be something that enhances a game meaningfully. It is a detriment.
On the other hand, the thing that everybody seems to just overlook are the very accurate motion controllers. They are the thing we should all be focusing on, improving upon. They get lumped in with the stupid headset, but they are the real highlight.
i dunno, i saw an awful lot of VR hype from people i know that are into gaming, and for at least a few months there were a lot of VR threads on Sup Forums. If I remember correctly, every VR headset reported sales below expectations over the holiday season. I think there were a bunch of people that thought this was going to be VR's time to make it big.
No major publisher / dev "seriously" followed the trend so there was nothing to bring the normie crowd to it. Also too expensive
>also I've been playing this game since most this board was still shitting their huggies
So have I. It had its weak moments but I thought it was still pretty damn good. Granted, my favorite part of the RE series has always been the atmosphere, so after 5, 6 and the Revelations games which severely lacked that, 7 was a major breath of fresh air to me.
>People said that about headphones too but nowadays if you play games using speakers you are labelled as actually braindead
You're a liar. Music personalization in public was wanted especially after boomboxes and outdoor radios got on people's nerves. Once mobile headphones got released it was practically a blessing.
>Who cares what you're wearing as long as you're getting enjoyment out of it?
The people wearing it. People prefer to look normal, relaxed, and comfortable playing a video game. That's why the typical imagery of this is someone sitting on a couch with just a controller in their hand. And if something comes up, a person can press the pause buttom and set the controller to the side, unlike VR. Plus, nobody likes being a liability in their own home, so strapping a screen to your face that blocks you from seeing what's going on in your living space is not ideal. This is the reason the Wii died after a couple of years despite its initial popularity; no one wants to go through so much physical hassle each time they want to play a video game.
>run oculus test program
>half my shit is not compatible
WELL THEN
It's VR's time now in the sense that it's not just gonna die off again. The technology is just to good now for it to die off, unlike in the 90's. Looking around feels natural, head tracking is perfect, and the controller tracking is perfect.
The image quality/FOV is really the most limiting thing about the hardware right now but even then it's enough to impress newbies. The most limiting things right now are merely price, which is to be expected in gen 1, and compelling software that isn't just "wow factor" shit.
For VR to work it has to literally be Sword art online or .hack tier.
Sensory hijack and all.
those are too limited to do much of anything. with no headtracking they're pretty much worthless for VR vidya. they'd work fine for watching VR movies, i suppose, but the one that i've used is probably not comfortable enough to want to use for extended periods of time.
i don't think they're worth the money unless you really really want to watch VR porn but really really can't justify spending the money to get a proper VR headset.
I've never tried to use one with a PC but I would expect it can be done.
>People prefer to look normal, relaxed, and comfortable playing a video game.
People don't give a shit what they look like when they play video games. That's why so many people play games while they're fucking filthy, full of cheeto dust and in their undies. People who care about what they look like when they're alone at home consuming personal entertainment are autistic.
>And if something comes up, a person can press the pause buttom and set the controller to the side, unlike VR.
VR headsets have a sensor that detects when they're being worn. If you're playing a game in which pausing is relevant, chances are the game will pause automatically when you take off the headset. Literally the same thing.
>so strapping a screen to your face that blocks you from seeing what's going on in your living space is not ideal
There's solutions for this as well. The Vive has a passthrough camera, and Oculus has one in the works. Non-issue.
>This is the reason the Wii died after a couple of years despite its initial popularity; no one wants to go through so much physical hassle each time they want to play a video game.
No, that's not why the wii died at all. The wii died because the motion controllers were imprecise and weren't useful for anything more than gimmicky wii sports bullshit that barely works properly, since any motion more demanding than waggling the controller or pointing it in vague directions isn't gonna do shit.
INFINITE MONEY
>How do we appeal to the general public?
>I know, let's sell them something they don't want and is more inconvenient than what they already have.
The people who thought this would take off are utter morons.
Japan will save VR and video games because they're actually passionate about games beyond just being a casual hobby / passing fad.
Why did your mother let you get into anime?
>people don't want VR
only retards think this
Anything on a 2D monitor seems lame once you've experienced it through a VR headset.
>The wii died because the motion controllers were imprecise and weren't useful for anything more than gimmicky wii sports bullshit that barely works properly, since any motion more demanding than waggling the controller or pointing it in vague directions isn't gonna do shit.
Gee, that sounds familiar.
>Selling early access hardware
it's not failing devs are just experimenting with what works and what doesn't
remember how bad CD games were in the 90s ?
>Have you seen the amount of people that bought a Vive?
But how many actively use it? I doubt many people still play it.
Friend bought a Vive
Used it for like two weeks
Got bored of it
Cat knocked off one of the sensors, broke it
He put the whole thing back in the box
And returned it
>>people don't want VR
Where did I say that in my post? Unless you do what said and make it actual virtual reality, then go home.
If you cannot have fun with the Serious Same VR ports, there is no hope. (As in you)
The Serious sam games for VR can make or break people. I highly recommend trying it.
"lel brain immersion VR is the only true VR xDD"
this
That's what people expected and wanted. Shitpost all you like, I'm not the one with a poorly selling product.
No, it doesn't. You're just a retarded shitposter.
Literally nobody who has tried VR controllers claims they're impercise or not versatile, or anything like the wii's controllers or even the shitty PS Move. The tracking on them is perfect and movement feels natural.
Expensive and literally everything with VR capability is shovelware.
She needs to free the other girl
Because every developer used it as an excuse to QWOP the interface.
Who expected something that is impossible? Only retarded manchildren like yourself who literally live in fantasy.
>poorly selling product
>HTC vive
>more than half a million units sold since launch
>on a gaming peripheral that costs $800
Yeah it is "poorly selling" if you compare it to a fucking flagship phone but that's not a gaming peripheral is it now, retard
This.
Japs actually care about gaming
Western developers only care about putting minorities and women in video games to please feminist and numales
>That's what people expected
What the fuck? How fucking dumb are these people who supposedly exist? I don't think I've met anyone so fucking braindead before.
Everyone knew exactly what these fucking things were when the first crowdfunding project went live. It's not the 90's anymore, we're 20 years ahead in technology and rendering capabilities are so much better than modern HMD's are hardly comparable to old VR. People wanted that, now that tech is much closer to being capable of running it.
why do people do this. for an anonymous site anons are sure obsessed over other anons' identities. why not just do to reddit if you care about identifying anons so much. it's easier to look up people's comment history and you don't have to do it in a less reliable roundabout way.
Some people are easily identifiable only by posting style. Have you heard of anti crack kun?
This.
I also think its a technology that still got some ways to go to really shine. I think its the future without a doubt. Maybe not just yet.
Because people don't really want to play with a monitor strapped to their heads no matter how ""immersive"" it might be.
Playing car games in VR gives you an objective advantage for not having to push shitty keybinds to look around to check if you're gonna hit the douche on the inside of the corner or not.
>people
subhumans*
anyone can copy a posting style though. it's like accusing someone of stealing just because they look suspicious. it's not actual evidence to be used to identify them as the perpetrator. then you have the trolls/shitposters/marketers/shills who will false flag and muddy the water even more and pretend they're someone they're not. it's like anons can't imagine images being reused just because they're the first image on google that comes up when they want to post a pic related. it happens, but no, it has to be ALWAYS the same exact user shitposting over and over. it's the same as newfriends coming into a thread to ask a legit question without realizing they came in at the worst time where someone else was busy shitposting. and then oldfriends shit all over the newfriend and think they're skilled detectives by framing the wrong user for shitposting. this happens way too much.
vr is overrated as fuck
the amount of limitations that comes with vr games hold them back from being more
regular games offer more to the player while vr has you in one place at all times even though your body is the controller, its understandble why they vr limits the player, that doesn't make the games anymore enjoyable
>regular games offer more to the player while vr has you in one place at all times
Not all games use teleportation, some do have full locomotion. Like RE7 or Serious Sam.
>people don't really want to play with a monitor strapped to their heads no matter how ""immersive"" it might be.
"People" don't really give a shit what they're wearing so long as they're comfortable, and having fun. Many people have said that wearing a VR headset looks silly but then, when actually being shown VR, have a blast because as far as your brain is concerned you don't actually have a monitor strapped to your head, what you're looking at "feels" real.
This argument is only used by people who haven't tried VR and have a misconception about what it's like.
thick loli thighs
pretty glad I can try out both Vive and Rift at work, considering most games are only fun for like an evening or so
>otome function will literally never come out
just kill me
