When it started it was popular because of the cross section of young anime fans and young furries that it appealed to. It was basically like a crudely drawn anime fan comic except the artist made the smart choice to make his own characters and world instead of infringing on an established IP, and it ended up growing into its own brand. It's actually more popular now than it was 10 years ago because the creator ended up growing into a good artist and stayed engaged with the community.
