I just ordered an Alienware 17 R4....
What am I in for and did I just fuck myself out of 2 grand?
I just ordered an Alienware 17 R4....
What am I in for and did I just fuck myself out of 2 grand?
A meme computer.
>What am I in for
A mediocre computer in every way possible.
>and did I just fuck myself out of 2 grand?
You fucked yourself hard m8.
>did I just fuck myself out of 2 grand
Yes.
I'm pretty sure you can get a better laptop for the same price.
A desktop for that price would be even better.
You sure did, without geek squad protection those 2 grands may just end up down the drain before you realize.
But it's not too late to sign up, what are you waiting for!?
Don't listen to these faggot virgins. You got a cool laptop
Anything alienware is overpriced shit
Cancel the order immediately. Hopefully it refunds all your money back.
you're retarded.
Could have got one off pcspecialist for half the price and probably double the power.
The specs I got on it are
i7-7700HQ, GTX 1070, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD, screen is 120hz and g-sync which I don't really know what that is and it's 1440p.
Really I'll tell you why I decided to get it. I've always thought Alienware was overpriced trash but I've taken a liking to the new line up they released. It isn't plastered in red and obnoxious fucking vents. I was looking around thouroughly though and I didn't really find anything else I liked except for Aorus and this one laptop I saw by Gigabyte. The aorus was more expensive for similar or weaker hardware and the Gigabyte while being really subtle in style and having similar specs had was a little too thin for my paranoia. I don't know but after some thourough research the Alienware wasn't super expensive compared to all the rest nor was it cheap in any means. But after the amount of reading I did I boiled it down and decided Alienware had the best deal for me personally. Hopefully it doesn't fucking die on the first boot and if I don't like it I'll return the damn thing. I've never owned a gaming laptop either, only desktops. So I'm going to wait and see
Even razer's overpriced laptops are better than ayylmaoware
...
the only guy i know that bought an alienware laptop had it burn out in like 2 years, and it was obsolete like instantly.
>HDD
you are a fucking moron
Here's an acer laptop with mostly the same specs for ~$850 cheaper.
>2 grand
You could have bought a thinkpad and a kickass desktop with that money.
you could make a top-of-the-line machine out of parts yourself for 1200
you got jewed
HD* my bad.
Nothing wrong with a big HDD, unless you want to drop like 1000$ on a 1TB SSD, retard. He has an ssd as well anyway.
>1440p at 120Hz with a 1070
There's no way you're doing better than medium settings m8
>same specs
>1060
>no SSD
I spent 1,400 making a nice desktop awhile back. I buy all means would rather have a desktop but I'm in the military now and needed a gaming laptop instead (for the time being at least)
I'm sorry man it's just too thin and I don't like the red styling. If I'm going to drop a good amount of money I'm going to make sure it's appealing to me in every way which truly is what I did. I've spent 2 weeks shopping around deciding what I wanted.
Depends on the game
Are there any modern titles noted for being particularly well optimized?
OP spent two grand on a machine that isn't even that capable at playing games.
OP here, when I get the laptop in I'll report if it has any issues and whether or not it was worth it. If I end up not liking it I'll return it and get my money back.
>laptop
>you could make a top-of-the-line machine out of parts yourself
Are you retarded?
>already explained why he needs a laptop
Are you retarded?
>gaming laptop
>$2000 computer
>120GB SSD
holy shit they fucked you hard
You better move around a lot or have a job that's boring and let's you play. Because these are the only reasons why you'd need a gaming laptop.
If you're just gonna be gaming at home you could've spent way less and gotten a better desktop.
Not that user, But My work computer is that, its far from thin.
I know it isn't a huge amount of SSD space but I think a lot of the price comes from the fact the laptop is built from aluminum and magnesium. It doesn't have any plastic in the frame I believe. Oh well, I can upgrade the SSD if I need to and 1TB of space is more than enough for me. Please be aware I knew all these things when I bought it.
Whats the latest on DSP?
>I can upgrade the SSD if I need
And now watch when Alienware says you voided your warranty
I joined the Navy 4 months ago and it's the only reason I'm buying a gaming laptop. I explained it here
>2 grand
>ask if you got fucked on price
>people tell you that you got fucked on price
>"yeah, but but I knew that when I bought it"
So what the fuck is the point of this thread? People aren't going to justify your stupid purchase for you.
>did I fuck myself out of 2 grand?
you wanted a meme gaming laptop and you're getting it, so no, I don't think so. Just enjoy it and be grateful and don't look to Sup Forums for validation :3
>laptop
will cook itself to death in 2 years
if you are gonna be a retard at least do yourself one favor and get a desktop
>will cook itself
Maybe if you don't know how to take care of your electronics, Pajeet.
Wanted to hear opinions and learn some stuff. It's fun to discuss things user and I'm lonely.
my toaster has been going strong for 5 years now
Even for gaming laptops, alienware are overpriced.
If you want a bigass gaming laptop, go with asus or MSI
I wanted to go with Asus or MSI but I just couldn't get past how hideous all of there laptops look.
Great only for the Oled panel in the 13'', garbage otherwise.
...
>have an alienware laptop I got out of box discount from Bestbuy back in '12
>upgrade to custom desktop 5 months ago
>power supply shits the bed
>back to using alienware laptop
I won't betray you again alienware
I also forgot to mention I dropped with it a new set of Sennheiser headphones, a Logitech G Pro I got on sale and a custom mouse pad with my favorite band reference on it.
Looking at my entire order I remember just a year ago I would have cringed at it but now I just like it all.
That's a pretty shitty reason. The physical appearance of the case being more important than price or performance?
While this used to be the case, it's not overpriced anymore. Do a price comparison vs others, you can get a 1060 for much cheaper than every other brand, including Asus, MSI, and even HP.
Not at all. But since I'll be coming home to use it as my main gaming system I want to be able to look at it and say I like it. I don't want to buy something I don't fully like.
For two grand you could have built a better gaming computer AND a better laptop.
MSI GT72VR is $1499 and the same specs. You fucked up.
I'm in the Army. Gaming desktop at home. I've been away for a month now and my gaming laptop has served me great for school and gaming. I own an MSI GE62VR I got for $1249. I definitely recommend going with MSI over Alienware or Gigabyte.
What's up Army bro, glad you are enjoying it
If you needed portable gaming, why not just get a handheld or a Switch? Do you really need all that power on the go?
I don't know how the 1070 in there compares to desktop ones but if it's even 70% as fast he can Max pretty much anything out there at 1440p and 60fps. Not sure about higher fps, but drop some settings and it'd easily run them.
Nothing exists on the switch that interests me except BotW
You could have built a nice rig for less
Good overpriced computer.
>That cooling in the image
I7-7700HQ
The feel when my 6700k out performs that temperature spike machine 24/7/365
So, what is the bowl for?
Honestly, the new alienware laptops design is really fucking nice. It's a lot better than the shitty car looking MSIs and the ugly as sin new lenovo ones.
I take it you also pay sticker price for cars and believe strippers actually like you.
It'll be a good computer and you'll love it, but in a few years when you want to upgrade, you'll remember the 2 grand you wasted and how your computer is only worth 200 with no possible way of upgrading.
tl;dr : should have invested in a desktop and bought a cheap/used laptop
Kek
If he wanted to sell it in a couple years he could easily get a grand out of it.
Eating that sweet chocolate he stored inside his new fridge.
It's an anti static apparatus
I drive a 2001 Mitsubishi Monterey Sport and I don't believe in going to strip clubs or anything of the sort.
This is the first major purchase I have ever made. I'm really tight with my money so this was a huge deal for me. I'm not buying another car for at least 5 - 6 years.
Then he loses 1000 dollars for it, plus who would by a USED laptop for a grand when you can buy a new more updated one?
Why so fridge like
Coulda had a 1080.
IMO should of went with the 13 OLED with 1060. With Dell's online military discount it ranges the same price as competitors.
I considered it but I once tried playing on a friend of mines 13 inc laptop and it was just way too small. I like a big screen.
128gb hard drive even the ps4 and Xbox one have 1terabyte harddrive for a 4th of what you paid
>Alienware
It's shit.
Good on you, user. Being happy with what you see IS important.
I don't have Alienware, but its no longer overpriced if you were to compare it with other laptops, considering other brands like Dell and Apple go for aesthetics over power, AW isn't that expensive nowadays.
Now whether is a good idea to drop $2k over a laptop for gaming it depends how much money you make OP, I wouldn't drop $2k on a laptop.
I took a chance on Alienware myself recently and got an Aurora R6. I like it a lot, no ragrets. If you got the dosh, do what you want.
How are you liking it? Any issues? Good performance?
>2grand
>gtx 1070
I like it a lot, maxes everything I've tried so far with at least 60fps. Only issue I had was it would black screen after exiting a game, but that was because my 8 year old monitor was set to 59hz instead of 60 for some reason. All fixed now. I even called Dell support and they actually spoke English and tried to be helpful, but it ended up being the monitor so oh well.
...
There you have it op.
Sup Forums has confirmed you got screwed and in return you confirmed you're a faggot retard.
Good thread.
gaming laptops aren't cheap and most of the price is because alienware makes there computers out of metal instead of plastic
There might have been cheaper options but I wouldn't call it a waste of money if you are truly in need of a laptop. I was traveling a lot for work and had an alright Acer laptop with a 760m. Think it cost me $1100 at the time but was well worth it when I worked away from my home country for 4-6 months out of the year. Ended up giving it to a cousin after I put together my computer about 4 months ago. Even though my desktop is way stronger than my laptop was I still miss the small form factor and portability enough that I might get rid of the PC I just made and grab a mid-high end laptop.
I won't tell you to get a desktop, as if you bought a laptop, I guess it's because you need something you can take with you, so the comparison will be irrelevent. But I won't lie : it's expensive for the specs. Moreover brand like this usually change all their products once a year, so you probably should have wait for the next refresh.
STILL, the quality of the material used by Alienware is way better than Acer, Asus, etc. Also, the customer service is beyond any comparison. I had a friend who got an Alienware and yes, it is impressively built and runs pretty cool for a laptop thanks to a good airflow management.
Alienware is overpriced, but it's also a very good brand. So you are not wrong wanting a famous brand when you're willing to spend 2000€/$ in a laptop. I have nothing against Acer or Asus but I wouldn't buy anything more than a 1000 bucks computer from them.
Though, the best price / quality / specs / customer service ratio you can find is probably MSI. You can argue that its quality is not exactly "as good as Alienware's" but it's still extremely well built with easy access to the ram, cpu and gpu. And it's much cheaper than Alienware.
> G A Y M A N
>L A P T O P
>A L I E N W A R E
So to answer you, it's not a "waste" of money : you bought a good laptop but for a very high price, so I wouldn't say that you made a good deal. Nothing to be ashamed of, but yes it was a bit of an expensive choice for a laptop.
there's a reason gaming laptops exist you retard
Bad customer support, literal pajeet tier. This is significant because customer support and help is supposed to be one of the advantages of prebuilt/craptops.
A meh computer that will play most games at high and sometimes ultra at 1080p 60fps. You could have bought a Computer that could do 1440p+ at 60+fps and then probably a monitor to go with it.
>there's a reason gaming laptops exist: retards
fixed
No one enjoys the Army. We adapt and overcome!
>I'm completely unaware that people have different needs and uses for things
I don't really have a strong opinion here, but Sup Forums seems to love pointing out how alienware is overpriced shit without backing it up. As far as I can tell, you get what you pay for. Granted, you don't NEED all that hardware to play a lot of games, but if you have the cash to spend and need a laptop instead of a desktop for games for whatever reason, I don't see where the "branding" is somehow inflating the price, especially considering you can't just build a laptop the way you do a desktop.
I have that fan, it lets you get a really decent overclock.
Just remember to install it properly
>I still live with my mommy and daddy and my room is so cool XD XD
sad.
They're good computers for about a year (if we exclude the awful price of course). These things degrade unbelievably fast. When it arrives, remove as much shitty bloatware that comes preinstalled as you can.
I'm enjoying my time in the Navy so far. I'm shipping out to Japan soon, I can't wait.
