Get a jailbroken slim, you can just pirate the games. Fat version at this point in time are practically guaranteed to die on you pretty quickly, yeah you can fix it, but only temporarily. Slim is safe

That model died on me whereas my launch PS2 is still going strong.

Not the OP but I bought a jailbroken slim PS3 and the guy was nice enough to put some games on the HDD as a bonus. The problem - I don't know how to add games myself. I meddled around a bit, and my guess is that I open multiman, then the directory browser, and then copy paste the game files from my USB to "GAMES" folder inside the "hdd0" folder - that's where the existing games that are on the HDD are located.
Am I correct?

You are right, but, basing on what I have seen so far, in my country the price for a slim 160-250 gb used one is 70-80€, since this one has 500gb and it comes under the models you recommended, so I'm seriously thinking about taking it. Will search for some other days before pulling the trigger.

in Australia i can get a slim ps3 for $60. got one for $30 once and a cechc (software ps2) for $30

The fat ps3 has a high rate of a failure after about a year or two, sometimes sooner. If you're lucky it might not.
