Which game has the most unique setting?

Which game has the most unique setting?

in terms of what?

if you mean lore and worldbuilding it's definitely xenogears

American Mcgees Alice takes place in a catatonic girl's brain.

When are we getting a turtle's dream in outer space game?

I'd say if we consider that psychonauts is more creative

oddworld

Chrono Trigger

LSD

Or this

>game has unique setting
>all it serves as is a pretty background skybox with nearly no mechanical significance
Hate this shit.
Fuck off with this. I'm looking at you, RPGs.

Xenoblade definitely had one of the most unique, interesting and coolest worlds. The idea of living on the back of two giant fighting gods is fantastic. Macro vs Micro, the actual worlds were really nice too. The swamps, fields, caves, great sea and cities were all unique and varied. Definitely one of my favourite worlds to explore in gaming.

Xenoblade's world is at least Vertical as fuck (Well Vertical then sideways across the Sword)

It's fine if you don't agree with me. Just post a better example instead of being a faggot.

What

Never heard of that video game.

Gravity Rush is neat, Tearaway had a fantastic world

The fuck are you quoting me for

They interpreted your post as a stab at Xenoblade because it's the OP pic.

Man when someone pointed out how surprisingly static X's world is compared to Xenoblade...

Take, for instance, the Ether Mine and that giant revolving drill in the center. Or the crystals in Valak mountain that emit vertical rays of light at night. Or the entirety of the Mechonis, with all those moving parts. X has barely any of that; even the floating islands in Primordia hardly float, they just kinda sit there (with no explanation to boot). I guess the game had some unique weather effects, but the original had those too, and the ones that damaged you constantly were pointless and annoying.

Nier

?

Final Fantasy XV.

Wish we got a follow up to madness returns. Felt like a game that experimented too much and had it's best ideas cut

wow look at all that area I can't explore

...

Kinda.

I feel like they put work in to the areas before they actually committed to the concept. There's nothing about a lot of the areas that suggests you're on the body of a titan, other than you can see the other titan in the distance, feels like they were cobbled together and forced in to the concept rather than organically woven in. Gaur Plains and the marsh are the biggest offenders.

Thats because you'd need to actually play video games faggot.
Do not reply to me ever again.

the game started becoming a reality when Takahashi looked at a figure of two giants, it was the crux of the game

@376497061
make me, no (you) for you though

Valek Mountain snows because it's being covered by one of Bionis's hands

lol

While not too exciting aesthetically, Vindictus takes place in basically purgatory. It's the only game I've seen use a purgatory setting without LOL LET'S JUST MAKE HELL WITHOUT THE FIRE

I recently got round to playing this.

I've never felt so constrained in an open world game before. Ironically, the game is actually pretty okay when it's in corridor mode (dungeons, etc) and the camera doesn't spaz out. I can't believe how static and non interactive the world is. I remember climbing up a linear path on a mountain to get to a dungeon, finishing the dungeon, and being absolutely dumbfounded that I couldn't jump over a 2ft rock to bypass walking back down the mountain. The whole world is like that. It looks nice but doesn't encourage exploration at all.

>the game started becoming a reality when Takahashi looked at a figure of two giants, it was the crux of the game
If that were true, I'd expect a lot of the areas to at least show that you're on a Titans body. They just feel like generic JRPG areas that the game constantly tells me is on the body of a Titan

The Bionis and Mechonis felt like living, breathing worlds, which is ironic considering they were long dead gods.

the world is actually super consistant and has lots of things that indicate you're on a giant, you just have to be observant

see for an example. If you use cheats to zoom the camera way out you see yourself on the parts of the giant, it's just hard to tell because bionis is fucking huge

Like what, exactly? I just finished playing both of those games and I like Madness Returns a lot and felt it was pretty damn good other than dragging in some parts. Only real thing I was disappointed in is the White Rabbit not being in more.

I get that, however, the game does a poor job of conveying that organically

Look up the art book my dude

As someone that loves Xenoblade, Stalker and Morrowind deliver that similar feeling of world awe. KotOR and EYE Divine Cybermancy are good too, but are more linear and smaller

Were you expecting a fully explorable moving body with no transition screens? Not even PC has anything like that, much less for the Wii. You can actually see other parts of the body depending on your location. Colony 9 and the Bionis shin are visible from the sewer entrance to Colony 6 for example. Most people never even notice that.

It's funny you say that, XC2 shows and undulating world in the trailer as you travel on the huge dragon

>Were you expecting a fully explorable moving body with no transition screens? Not even PC has anything like that, much less for the Wii
No? I was expecting something other than "generic JRPG area but we constantly tell you it's on the body of a titan". There's nothing separating, for example, Guar Plains or Colony 6 from any other generic grass plain in any JRPG.

I think he's saying that placing a standard grassy area on a giants body is not very organic, which is true.

At what part did they run out of dev time? Just before entering mechonis?

never, nintendo gave them more time and funding to finish up. This isn't xenogears

You know, I might be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure devs don't work on games linearly.

Also there's more cut content on Bionis than Mechonis

Mechonis needed a cool outdoor area (Not the Beach). Walking around some rusted junky shithole would have neat.

The shot of that moving neck/head in the XC2 trailer made my heart feel weird. I'm excited.

>not the beach

there is no other way there'd be an area like that while making sense unless you go to the foot of the mechonis which is dumb since you can travel via sword valley

I really love Xenoblade threads, they're fairly rare but it's great to see other people discussing the game. I thought you'd like to know user.

The plains are part of the leg and are instantly recognizable on the titans body as you progress the area and seen on the titan model in cutscenes. You can even see them in the OP artwork. It fits the lore and it's unique enough that most games don't have that level of detail.

>fairly rare

m8 there is at least one daily

Just looking at Guar Plains, what indication do you have that you're on a Titans leg?

There's nothing indicating that. It's a generic grassy plains area placed on an arbitrary part of the game world, that's it

Plot twist. The titans are fucking huge and the shitty textures and models dont make it apparent enough.

They must not be when I'm usually active because I don't see them pop up regularly. I still enjoy them a lot!

Even the level design doesn't reflect that you're on the body of a titan.

What about the marsh indicates that you're on the hip?

Look directly in front or slightly upwards. Climb to a higher altitude for a better view. Also, you're standing at the edge of an abyss from so high up you can't see the bottom because of clouds. In a normal world you'd expect the place to be a cold mountainous wasteland, not a lush grassland.

t. enviromentalist pro

You dont know shit about the laws of thermodynamics of the games universe.

Skies of Arcadia has to be one of the most unique settings for a game

Their dead bodies essentially just make up the surface area on which life and societies flourish

Morrowind is the answer.

Weebshits ITT need to realize their jRPG's stories and settings aren't worth more than some furry's fanfiction.

looks like zeal in Chrono trigger

>calling jRPG stories furry fanfictation where there are literal furries in TES

I think there's far more to Gaur Plains than just "standard grassy area", though. There are a number of caves, ruins and lakes to explore, and as you progress you do ascend slightly upwards, which goes to show that the upper leg isn't quite parallel to the water below. And then there are those narrow pathways around the edge of the leg which clearly show how high up you are.

To me it feels organic because being on the body of a dead titan has no particular significance in itself, and it doesn't have to have one - the life that flourished on it is just a natural consequence of ether, the essence of all living things, and how the Bionis was positioned the moment it died. The game even explains that the shoulder, which corresponds to Valak Mountain, is all snowy and cold because it faces away from the sun, which for some reason is stationary in the game's universe.

I love how they construct the world.
just look at pic related.
The house is made of cardbox + can
I wish nowadays people can construct interesting world like these.

and not the "generic buildings" style that surprise noone anymore.

Don't know about most unique, but Morrowind/Elder Scrolls definitely wins for most detailed. Basically fucking everything in the game has its own lore, history, culture, politics, etc written from scratch, and often from the perspective of multiple races/societies. It even has its own obscure metaphysics and religious mysticism.

>Grassy Plains

Yeah but he's the god of biological shit (And being a dick) so it's a given that the god would be made of rock with shrubs growing out of him.

I don't know what a God's leg would actually look like so if I know how they could have made it look more "leggy"

Remember Me.
I can barely say any other game that come closer to this one.

Unironically Touhou, it takes place in a small area of Japan separated from the modern world that's full of magic and monsters, akso has some pretty cool lore too

Still waiting for a game where we get to explore a dried up ocean with mutated sea life that has adapted to land and all kinds of eerie shit

I still don't know whether those giants have their own gravity or not.

Really? ff15 felt like the most boring world out of any final fantasy game.

Why does nobody ever talk about this gem

Sorry, forgot pic

The Void

Nice wallpaper, fuckin saved

FFX

>HUURRR DAH MOUNTUNS HAVE CURVY SHITS ON THEM!!
>YOUNEEEEEEEEEEK

Never post again

Bloodborne takes place in a dream within a dream in a nightmare's nightmare past.

If there was an award for needlessly complicated and weird setting, FFX would win it.
