>you're a little late, kid

march 14th. that's when this vulnerability was patched

*decrypts you*
Heh, should of never mssed with a STEM graduate....

>windows

WOW HOW WAS I SUPPOSE TO KNOW WINDOWS UPDATES WORKED

That's what you deserve for pirating shit. Also
>keeping sensitive files on a non removable drive on an Internet connected device, without backups
Normies were a mistake

>he didnt update his copy of windows

I'm still paranoid to turn my PC off for fear I'll have this when it turns back on

my sides

Could you get your files back from this superior ransomware Sup Forums?

Nah, if it was 6-10 I could tho

As long as you've been keeping up with security updates you'll be fine. Most of the systems that were affected were out of date in that regard.

>Not having repositories, copies on several computers and physical backups.

ISHIGYTTYGIGGYTY

What if not?

I haven't. So yeah. I updated earlier after PANIC

You can't infect a pc if it doesn't work.

If you don't open suspicious emails or share a network with idiots that open suspicious emails, your computer can be outdated as shit and you won't be infected.

Haha, tell them bro.
Common sense masterrace, amirite? xD

Dang that is a fat ass

Is this true? God dann it I've beaten dad so many yes in the head to make him stop reading spam

What if I just turn of the internet connection.

A don't have a little brother or a retarded cousin that installs malware

it's simple as that

>noscript
>ublock origin
>firewall/port monitoring program

there is no way you can malware unless you are a retard that enables all scripts on sites, downloads malware without checking the md5

So this... Is the power... Of the PC Master race...

Kek, you don't get bullshit like that on the ps4

>But you have not so enough time.

thanks for encrypting my files virus-kun

telpeorts behind you
*pays ransom*
heh personnely Im not a poorfag kid

No, antivirus software is important too, especially since you're browsing Sup Forums and probably have downloaded random files from questionable sources before.
But since you're a random fucker and unlikely to be specifically targetted by sophisticated cyber attacks, not openining random email attachments does spare you of this crap, yes.

No.
Infected machines scan random IPs, and if they're vulnerable, it's gg.

>not making backups regularly

My PC can explore right now, all I'll lose are some savegames from games, all other important data and game setup files are stored across several RAID 1 5TB HDDs which are off most of the time.

I thought that was ol' retarded Tony Danza in the thumbnail.

doesn't infect my GNU/Linux machine

>PC FATS WILL TRY AND DEFEND THIS

so lets list the faults

>encryption virus that stops you using most of your files
>steam owns all your games and can block or take them away at any point
>basically no physical games at this point
>literally started the kickstarter / early access / unfinished garbage era of gaming
>shit to no exclusives these days
>constant graphics whoring shit games like skyrim with mods / gta 4 with mods or still claiming crysis is best looking game ever
>no local multiplayer
>doesnt get a lot of multiplats
>significantly higher investment for no extra return

PC should have a fucking containment board like Sup Forums absolute scum of the gaming world

>Infected machines scan random IPs, and if they're vulnerable, it's gg.
How do you presume they infect your computer without putting any files on your PC?

and this is why you should never buy or trust amd. they blatantly had some involvement in this. everything bad to happen to pc has amd involved somehow.

Thats because nobody uses Linux, who the fuck wants to autistically input twenty lines of code into a terminal just to open a document

that's the reason this virus is a big deal -- the exploit in windows that exists allows exactly that.

block THIS
*unzips backup*

I made sure to keep my security up to date so I'm not worried about this, but how invincible is this encryption really? Is your only real recourse to cough up the bitcoins?

so have any anons or normal every day people got this virus yet ?

all i've heard is nhs and other companies ...

>tfw mac / ps4 / switch master race so wouldn't know

>Not just formatting

it's dead already see

...

I had been thinking about encrypting all my files anyway.

>taking a screenshot of a post with an image on it instead of saving the pic
>being a phoneposter
NORMALFAG REDDITORS LEAVE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

You can crack the password to decrypt the files.
Can.
On average you'll die before it happens though.

Pretty much.

That doesn't help already infected machines, just stopped the spreading.

I'm pretty sure that that's not how this virus works, at all. You still NEED to have malicious files on your pc, the difference is that if your pc shares a network with other pc's, the virus infects them as well.
That's why a lot of institutions like hospitals and schools have been infected.

IMAGINE BEING SO FAT

Not 100% true.

The only infection I ever remember getting was back pre 2010 on my old XP machine, I went to Destructoid (yeah, it was relevant back then, so don't get all triggered) and one of the ad scripts infected my pc in less than a second and completely took control of the desktop background. Couldn't change it; trying to open desktop properties brought up their own fake screen of it to try and scam me etc.; was quite difficult to remove.

That was the day I first installed adblock.

It's fixed and anyone who actually downloaded the security updates is fine. Big companies got hit because they never update.

the infected, deserved it.

They do put files on your pc, that's what the IP scan is for: to detect machines that have the vulnerability, you numpty.

WHERE ARE THE THREE CHEESE PIZZAS

Doesn't that only apply to local networks?

>using Windows
kek

So what happens if you pay? does it really decrypt?

They putting it through open 445 port with vulnerable smb1 protocol.

>Unity
Absolutely disgusting. OpenBox3 masterrace.

It hit yesterday you mong.

Didn't this only happen to around about 75,000 PCs across 99 different countries?
It's only making the news because it happened to a hospital.

>does it really decrypt?
Yes, otherwise no one would pay.

Do you agree with trans women participating in woman-only competitions and beating the shit out of everyone because they're actually male?

Just FYI you shouldn't give in to the ransom, because not only may they not actually decrypt your files, they'll also pass your details on to others as someone who conceded, which will make you a more likely target in the future.

never negotiate with terroists

>he doesn't run GNU + Linux

What the fuck is this? I've been seeing it posted a lot today. I haven't turned off my computer in like 2 weeks will this happen when I restart it?

Maybe (not).

>linuxes behind you
nothing personnel, kiddo

Yes, these people are pretty reliable for criminals, though I wouldn't be surprised if this huge volume of people wanting to get their shit back means some will fall through the cracks despite paying.

oh no, not my rare Pepe folder pls

What antivirus can Sup Forums recommend me to use?

STOP DOWNLOADING THOSE COMPUTER GAMES user THEY'RE GIVING US VIRUSES

*Proceeds to open every spam laden email

youtube.com/watch?v=u8qgehH3kEQ

Salty milk and coins

>kidnap someone's wife
>ask for $1mil to give her back safely
>get paid
>kill wife
>walk away

No but you're right, an anonymous criminal on the internet would definitely be true to their word.

Everyone does not update immidiately when an update hits you retard. If they did, people wouldnt' be having this issue now.

Windows Defender is fine. Just make sure you use an up to date ad blocker, and don't visit dodgy torrent or porn sites.

75,000 elderly and retards

spam emails are automatically filtered to spam, there is no way in hell with all the warnings that you would be some dumb enough to click the attachment

especially from mandinga walamabe who is a billionaire from africa.

Antivirus won't help with this.

Common Sense 2017.

who still shares a computer? it's not 1999 anymore

Brain.exe+CommonSense.exe combined with BitDefender. If you're retarded, no AV will save you.

Common Sense 2017™

Just install this if you have windows update disabled
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms17-010.aspx

I ATE THOSE FOOD

Is it enough to just open email or you have to open embedded file for infection?

this virus isn't as a result of opening an email or some random program. you can get hit with it by doing absolutely nothing at all. it will get pushed to your pc via the open net if you don't have a firewall/antivirus. it scans for open ports.

There's a software that will manipulate your score.

common sense

I do not, but seeing women acknowledge the fact that they can't possibly beat a man always makes me smile.

Close port 447 and disable SMB.
Install gentoo after that.

You don't have to click anything to catch this virus. Having an SMB port (445) open to the Internet on an unpatched Windows is enough for your machine to become infected without any user input.

That would equivalent if someone kidnapped thousands of wives, others wouldn't pay if they knew they will kill her.

They are though. How about educating yourself on the subject?
And your comparison hinks because people aren't gonna take chances on the live of a loved one. The other user was right, if ransomware folk were unreliable, nobody would pay, they'd shrug because their data would be lost either way.

Reminder that viruses dont infect your machine out if thin air

75000 thousand people literally clicked the dubious email they received

They are demanding $600 for, say, 100,000 computers. If people pay and they decrypt they stand to possibly make $60M. If someone pays, they don't decrypt, and then that person reports it, no one else fucking pays.

The only reason ransomware works is because people know they get what they pay for. Just keep them happy and money will flow.
Even one scammed customer means you're not getting a dollar more from it.

>mfw haven't updated win 7 in over 2 years
>PC works just about the same as before
Gimme a rundown on this thing because JUST NOW my stupid ass is starting to get paranoid

As an avid Microsoft Edge user, and Italian Horse Porn enthusiast, I must say this virus has me worried. I may have to conquer my crippling fear of OS updates to avoid becoming a victim.
