Fightan

Do people seriously ask "how do i know which character to main"? What i mean is, who comes into the fighting genre only looking to pick something that is high tier instead of picking based on character and just getting good?

Surley there still needs to be actual enjoyment involved rather than just being a robot who picks what is efficient before hand? I have always picked who i like, even if they are shit or hard, because i like them.

What do you do Sup Forums? My mains btw

>Kazuya Mishima
>Sakura Kasugano
>sometimes Makoto (SF)
>Eileen (VF)
>Cassandra (SC)

All picked for no reason other than i liked them. But ehat about you?

It's something about human nature.
You know deep down that even if somehow you became the best at your character, someone who's the best with a better character would always win.
Because hard work cannot defeat hard work coupled with natural advantages

Some games have a ton of characters, with many of them being hard to actually get a feel for. Some good examples are Venom and Rachel, who you'll just have no idea what they're even doing as newcomers, so asking someone actually experienced with the game would help with that. Otherwise you're bound to only be drawn to newcomer-friendly characters because you can actually manage to do something with them right off the bat.

Personally I just look stuff up about them myself usually. Even if I don't really go into a game with the mindset of wanting to play the "same style" of character as I do in other games, but I often end up doing so anyway.

Sounds boring though.

>oh Tekken 6 is out
>who the fuck are THESE new characters??
>worm arab?
>chainsaw waifu?
>FAT FUCK?!
>"wait user, that "fat fuck" is literslly broken tier, get good at him.
>......... O-okay....

No. Id rather struggle knowing i did it for me.

I just pick the one with the biggest tits and practice like crazy.

See gents? "Honesty."

You may think it sounds boring, but going for high-tier characters is often necessary not to have a completely fucking miserable experience. If you're a tournament player, then chances are you're going to run into top-tiers alot even in pools. If your character has an incredibly shitty matchup against them, then most of your time is going to be spent on playing those unfun matchups. Sure winning will still feel good, but actually being able to fight on even ground just makes the experience more pleasant.

Players who main low-tiers generally bitch alot because of this. Those who play top-tiers have a more fun experience in tournament because they don't have to deal with that. It's not fun for anyone to just sit there with no chance in neutral or have to take some really painful setplay just because of your character lacking the tools that the opponent does.

It's not really something casual players can understand anyway, since their pride just won't let them. In theory, if you play the shittiest character and get every single read right, then you can win against the best character in any game. However, that's just now how it is in real life competitive play at all.

chun li in almost every game shes in, with the exceptions of MVC2, SF2 and Alpha 3

not only is she thicc and gorgeous, i genuinely like the way she fights - especially in 3rd strike

Those type of people usually end up suffering character crisis anyways. Picking a character with your heart is the best way to enjoy a game because not every player is going to perform with their character to their full potential anyway.

So im prehaps being naive? Its a shame though, i don't think i would WANT go be good at fighting games if the character didn't mean jack shit to me. Id feel like i am playing "high tier characters" game and not "game"

They have to feel good for me to play, I know that sounds vague as shit, but if someone is too clunky or awkward to me, it's not fun. After that it's cool factor/how much I like them.

I wish I had more chances to play against more than just random people so I can have long sets, figure out my playstyle and get pointers on who "fits me like a glove."

Well that's why balance is important for some people, since they don't want to be limited by that choice. It doesn't matter much for casual players or netplayers usually, hence why you still see an army of Slayers and Bullets online while they have little presence in tournament.

It's relieved somewhat nowadays because of patches that can give people hope, but that means waiting one out. Some people are fine with that, some people aren't. Hell, some characters that are shit in competitive play are better than the actual top-tiers in low-level play. Potemkin will shit all over players because of how much damage he can do off single reads, while Venom will struggle because of not being able to do their pressure and space control optimally.

i mained Nash in SFV but I heard he got gutted (I stopped playing and I didn't play much to begin with). I still can't really imagine playing as anyone else.

I heard Hwoarang was really good but I didn't really know why, I know I liked him the most since Tekken 3 but when Lili came out it was just all about Lili for me, with occasional Leo and Asuka

It sounds more about covering bases. Sometimes having a shotgun of secondaries can ease some of the slack in unfavorable matchups your main might have, and you might learn some new things and come back to your main reinvigorated and with new perspectives.

People don't ask that so they will be given a tier list to choose from. What most people as is "What should I main if I have these preferences?". For example, someone might like a certain playstyle or character type but if the character roster is huge as shit, then hacing the knowledge before diving in can be useful.

Personally I don't care. I main Bullet in BBCF and while I constantly hear she's trash and that there are better choices, I can't help but play her. I wouldn't recommend a player new to the genre, or even the series start with her though.
I think if you're new you don't want to play as a bad character because they'll give the player a worse experience of the game.

I main

> Xianghua (SC)
> Noel (BB pre centralfiction, then Es)
> Shen Long (BR)
> K (KoF)
> Ky (GG pre Xrd, then Ramlethal)
> Cyrax (MK)

That's why only the top tier characters ever win fighting games tournaments... not.

Hi luffy

Depending on the game I might pick a character that is known to be better for getting an idea of how it works but for most part I play whoever I enjoy.

I just go for rushdown characters and characters with good footsie potential or shotos because my memory is dogshit when it comes to remembering moves. Though really just play the characters you enjoy playing as.

99% of people don't play at a level where tiers even come into the equation.

There's lots of character specialists even at high level. Fighting games are amazing because you can always push characters forward.

Do that 1% seriously just get a kick out of "i will pick whoever allows me to manipulate this particular games mechanics to the max" like whats the point? To be best at something for nothing more than being the best at exploiting a specific game? With no rral interest beyond saying "i exploited x game best"
Its TOO scientific if you grt my meaning. No soul.

I want to make a good, balanced, fighting game.

Any tips/ideas?

Not tiers entirely, but top-tiers in some games can be incredibly oppressive even at lower levels of play, so it comes down more to common matchups.

Yes. Is there something wrong with that?

Competitive players enjoy winning, there's no bitching about "exploiting" or whatever. Both players are giving it their best, so coming out on top is naturally satisfying. You're not going to win just by picking a top-tier, you need to put an absurd amount of time into practicing and everything. Saying that the dedication that they put in has "no soul" just because of balance issues is retarded when it would be handled exactly the same way even if every single character was viable at the top level.

Girls. Waifus. Sluts. But well designed ones. But don't make it ALL about them. That's always shit. Have some Japanese karate bad boys in there too.

I simply pick characters when I like their style, both in how they look and how they play.

With that said, SFV is a fucking turd but goddamn Ed is fun.

Top tier characters are usually fun because they have a lot of options.
Also when people ask which character to play they usually ask based on interest in playstyle, not exactly tier.

At lower levels of play it usually doesn't matter because a character that's low tier may be easy to use and hard to counter for beginners, so at that level of play it's actually a better character that requires lots of training and setups to shine.

Some genuinely like how they feel and proceed to main the top tier characters, some have money on the line and want to have the best chance at winning, some play them for the matchup coverage in the case they come across a character their main just has a hard time handling. It's a combination of these depending on the player. Don't be hard-headed about it. Think about how much you really get by stubbornly playing one character, no matter how much you love them initially.

Virtua Fighter

Yeah i think so. They seem to be the best at something almost irrelevent to them. They just CAN.

>do you like basketball user?
>NO. But i am good at playing the game in a certain way when you have shown me the rules i know how to take those rules to the limit and will always do so. I just want to be the best at that and will change my style accordingly to those rules.

I mean, i once saw a video of a guy who could tell you what brand of lawnmower you had just by lsitening to the sound. He was "the best in the world" but fuck me what for?

Fuck off Luffy you hack

Make it fast like Third Strike
Make it flashy like Anime
If you can do both, you'll attract all of the twitch streamers.

But im saying there is something a bit odd about this scenario
>you play Tekken
>life long Mishima main
>Tekken 6 comes out in 2008
>BOB is completely broken
>knowing the base mechanics of Tekken, "1% competitor" drops his usual main in light of bew broken boy to ensure he wins at the game called "Tekken" even though he now just prostitued his previous choices simply to win the next game called "tekken"

How is it irrelevant to them? Like dude, ask yourself why do you play games, or anything really. The answer is that you enjoy doing it, right? Guess what, they enjoy being the best at something. It gives them enjoyment. It is not irrelevant.

Is it good? No. But does it even remove a semblance of this so-called "soul" that you talk about? The answer to that is no.

If all competitors are doing their best to win and practice the game heavily, then they're all just as dedicated to get to the top. A perfectly balanced game does not have more emotion just because of being balanced.

youtube.com/watch?v=JO1r6kRiP6s
Here is a game that's balanced like shit, with both players using characters that heavily "exploit" the game through OSes and heavily ambiguous setup. Despite that, you can clearly see that they have an extreme amount of passion, and no amount of armchair psychologist bitching about how it's "too scientific" is going to change that.

I'm notorious in my local FGC for always picking shit characters. I don't do it on purpose; in fact, in my main game, my character was originally top-tier and got hard nerfed. I just play who i like aesthetically and have bad luck.

Any way, point is, after years I got real sick of feeling crippled. I don't blame my losses on my characters; after all, I made the choice to play the character, and that was a huge strategic mistake on my part. But there are always situations that I can't really take advantage of, or situations I can't escape well, or I just have to make twice the reads of the other guy, and I get tired of it. It's discouraging.

So now I still only play characters I like, but I go down the list of who I like and pick someone who can compete. I don't really beat anyone I wasn't already beating, but life is a lot less frustrating.

And I still wheel out a low tier to check if they know their matchups.

I do. But i just feel like fighters are character driven i guess. I want to be good at my group of characters in Tekken, not the best at "the mechanics of Tekken" as best manipulated by whivhever nee broken fuck boy is in.

But i am not very good, let alone a 1% so prehaps my opinion is irrelevent on the matter anyway.

>2014 BB finals
Holy fuck that was good shit. I hope 2017 also delivers.

I usually jump into training/trial modes and go through each character. Something will usually "click" for me, whether it's easy combos, a certain playstyle or even a single move. The only thing I'd say is consistent in my mains is that they're good for rushdown.

>Nine (BB)
>I-No (GG)
>Karin (SFV)
>Cerebella (Skullgirls)

To be honest i would say i pick a character based on how much i like to play them but if I don't think they look aesthetically pleasing i probably wont pick them up.

Like i could never fucking get myself to main Fang or Gigas or Sylvie, simply because i think they and their moves look lame as hell.
I don't give a fuck about tierlists tho, i only care about doing the best i can with a character i like.
Beating someone in mirros gives me that most ragning hard on.

Okay, so you just have different preferences. You prefer to master a character. Someone else wants to master a game. Nothing wrong with either of those.

It's not about possibility it's about consistency. And if a character is consistently winning tournaments, that character is obviously not low tier.

I just picked him back in 1999 because he looked cool as fuck. 18 years later and he's still my main. I tend to like characters that can be played very aggressively.

>Brawl days
>Watching good DK players have to fight a DDD

Jesus why

It was like watching Shaq dribble a baby. That's not a fight.

>BBCP EVO 2014
I knew what it was before even clicking. Gonna watch it for the 50th time now.

Galileo pls come back, CF needs you ;_;

I hope so too.
>tfw the last BB tournament I watched had a Carl mirror grand final.

Lol

???

If you want to watch a great CF Grand Finals, then there was one not too long ago.

Top tiers usually mean you have more viable options at a high level of play, which most people find fun anyways

Smash isn't a fighting game but there's a lot of lowtier fags that specifically play the shitty low tier meme characters like Ganondorf and Jigglypuff just to be smug if they win and say "at least I'm not a tier whore" if they lose. Does the same thing happen in other fighting games?

except R.Mika is still good

Street Fighter won't bring Sakura so I don't know who to main in V. It's such a clusterfuck of a roster.

Yeah, that happens alot. Pot and Slayer players in GG, Susanoo players in BB, FANG in SFV ect.

Hell there's even a name for it dubbed after Dan, who people use specifically to be able to say that they managed to win with Dan, and then if they lose then they can just go for the Dan OS where the opponent shouldn't be happy because all they did was beat Dan.

Smash is a fighting game and yea it does

Or sometimes you get people claiming you Low Tier character is "cheap" and "for scrubs" when they lost with Mitsurugi.

People's opinion on tiers and characters change all the time. Xian made Gen in sf4. If Xian had not existed, no one would have ever even known about Gen. Of course there are characters that are generally strong and most likely won't suddenly be considered bad or vice versa, but if you don't pick the absolute low tier and go for mid or higher you can absolutely main them seriously in most games and try to bring them even higher.

It sure fucking is. Fucking terrible.

The SF Alpha movie, despite being idiotic, was decently animated

I love the mentalitiy of that.
>WOAH WOAH WOAH REMEMBER: you only beat my high tier and 4 ranks higher character woth your low-tier because YOU are the scrub.
>nobody ever plays that shit character so i got tricked is all you scrub PLAY THE GAME PROPERLY MY WAY

It's crazy SFV still doesn't have an honest high IQ character similar to her yet.

yeah, people have been doing that with Dan in Street Fighter for years
It annoys me because I just like the guy and there's a little story why I will always pick him

All that means is that Gen wasn't as gimped as everyone thought he was, not that there aren't characters who are gimped.

I forget who said it, but there's the saying something like "What do you a character with a frame-2 OHKO in a game full of characters with frame-1 OHKOs? Bottom Tier." Some characters are just unable to take advantage and put on pressure like other characters or what have you. I'm not saying not to play who you want, but do it know you're conciously making a shit descision and should be ridiculed for it.

I say this as a long-time low tier main. If you're going to do it, understand what you deficiencies are. Approach it with humility, and do it as a bad choice you're making on purpose.

best response so far desu.

for me, I had to try a lot of characters in sf4 before I ended up settling on zangief.
Which mostly just came down to the fact that I could never get combo timing right, so I just relied on SPD damage.

Whenever a thread of mine gets purged I type Lol in a random thread to check if I'm warned/banned

The funny thing is its possible to meet "dans" all your life in martial arts.
>WOAH LOOK AT KYOKUSHIN KARATE! I WANT IN!
>i teach karate you know
>oh really cool!
>turn up
>it's just shotokan no contact point fighting
>shiiiiiid...

Looks like you good. What did you post?

>I can't break throws or duck
>But you're the scrub for throwing me

It takes some powerful cognitive dissonance and it fascinating to see it on display.

Ironic eceleb thread

Literally braindead : the character

as is ky, raven or leo, fuck people who play these pieces of shit

You just sound like you enjoyed being bullied in school and are a bit of a masochist

people who think they're good by picking high tier should be ridiculed, many times I've had this happen and I switch to their guy, the top tier one and fucking stomp them because they don't know what they're really doing
it's stupid that there are people who think like that but to them, winning is all that matters
I always want to get better and thus actively avoid picking good characters unless I like the look of them or if they're someone I always picked and they get buffed

play how you like but don't push how you feel on other people because there will always be sometime willing to bring you down a peg
I play modestly and humility and I always will do so

Never trust any Dojo that hired a real graphic designer

Only trust dojos that rented an old garage and that make you wonder if you're really at the right place when you show up

This.

To be fair, any blue rank i meet in Tekken who plays King and thinks they are being cute with this i just throw them back over and over again. For some reason thry don't like it when its them.

>All that means is that Gen wasn't as gimped as everyone thought he was
That's exactly the point. A good player can bring a character further than what the current opinion of that character stands. Tiers are not some magic shit that's written in stone, they're born from player opinions and these come from how people play the game. A character that's not believed to be that good may be taken a step further if a good players decides to dedicate himself to that.

>and should be ridiculed for it
I don't see why if you don't use that as an OS.

Also I am not OP. I personally don't main characters I feel are too shit, so characters who are just bottom tier and I think are just not able to win properly. Usually anything from lowmid up has the potential to be usable.

Please don't.

In SF I'm a Shadaloo guy. Always Bison and Balrog regardless of where they stand on the tier lists. I used to like Akuma a lot too but in SFV I just can't get into him and I have a two-character limit, if you try to actually get good at more than two characters at a time you'll never progress.

Ao far out of Aikido, Shotokan, Judo and BJJ i have only found that Judo and BJJ work well under real pressure.

I'm okay with that if for no other reason than SFV would ruin her like every other character they brought back for it. Alpha 3 Sakura is best Sakura because she always felt like an SNK character there and I do better in SNK fighters

What's a good "theme" for a fighting game?

I'd like to just do a world tournament, but that feels overused/

I usually try a slew out and she which one I suck with less and do nothing but learn them

That's why Black Adam was my boy during Injustice and took those GL spam shitters down a few pegs every time I came up against one.

It's the same reason my best team in MvC3 was Spiderman Tron Bonne and Super Skrull

how? the world tournament in a ring thing rarely fucking happens

Alpha/Zero Sakura is best Sakura because she needs to 16 years old. The idea of a 25 year old Sakura in SFV just doesn't sit well.

>I always want to get better and thus actively avoid picking good characters unless I like the look of them or if they're someone I always picked and they get buffed.

This is a trap. Most low tier characters are low tier because of a lack of options. You are gimping your understanding of the game by playing with a non-functional character in addition to making a poor choice over all.

When you pick low tier, you're boxing with one arm tied behind your back. It's not an impressive feat, you're just a retard for tying your arm behind your back and losing, and you should be mocked. Do it anyways of you like it and all, but you're dumb.

This is, of course, only talking about an actual tournament with money and placements; none of it applies to casual play or online play.

t. D-tier main

when you play top tier you know that you have lost because you yourself have made errors

you're never fighting matchups or blaming your character for loses so in a way it's the best incentive to improve instead of getting lethargic and into a "my character could never beat that character anyway" mindset

plus who doesn't like winning, seriously

A shady as fuck tournament from an "official" and "legit" source will always be the best kind of tournament. Especially if there seems to be no organization or enforcing of rules. Like you can have participants like the protagonist, a literal serial killer, a child, some one who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the straight laced rival who's there to investigate the blatant disregard for legality in a government run tournament. Literally GG1. Older stuff from early in development wrote it as a death tournament. Some win quotes are left over from this, case and point Ky's quote to May.

Yeah this is a good reason why to play top tier also

It was so annoying to hear faggots from Sup Forums use Dan then say HEHE I USE DAN IF U USE GOOD CHARACTER I WUD WIN XDDD

If it turned out that in Tekken 7 Lucky Chloe COULD be the highest tier character, i wouldn't suddenly drop Kazuya to pick her up just to have an advantage.

t. brick

>SFV is SFA4 but isn't because of marketing reasons
>Only 1 SF1 character other than Ryu & Ken
>No Dan
>No Rose
>No Sakura
>No Final Fight characters
>Nobody likes the SFV original characters
>Most returning characters feel like they've had their limbs removed compared to previous games
How did Capcom mess up so badly?

Tiers are magic shit that's written in stone; our human understanding of them is just limited. The mechanics don't change (well, except when they do, patches etc.)

It's possible for a character to be overlooked but that opportunity to be "discovered" only exists for characters who have that untapped potential.

If you play a character because you think they're better than everyone thinks they are, you're not making a low-tier pick, you're picking a high-tier no one else knows about. But don't put your eggs in that basket blindly; unless you understand the game and see that potential, don't lean on that unlikely hope to get you through. It's unusual to have that potential.

I dunno, I kind of like the idea that Sakura is a 25 year old high school dropout that still wears the uniform because she's on her way to becoming a karate hobo, like Ryu. That might just be my age talking, though. I considered Sakura a waifu before I knew what that was because I liked her as an energetic older sister type. Suddenly I was 20 and she's still about 16.

This isnt Alpha 4 because the Alpha series has footsies and good normals

And the shills are defending it yet

>fuck people who have little frame of reference for guilty gear's mechanics and pick the closest thing to a shoto to get their bearings
Yeah no, fuck you. I'm not picking chipp, dizzy, or ram or some shit and pick up bad habits because I barely know what the fuck I'm doing. I don't care about this pretty boy fuck that much either, but he's at least stable.

The low tier option select is the fucking worst
>HAHA I BEAT YOU WITH LOW TIER
>LOL YOU ONLY BEAT ME BECAUSE IM PLAYING LOW TIER

If there's already an established character that you like then sure pick them. Tekken's tier is pretty tight knit anyway

I however have never played a Tekken before, and plan on going in with Leo because she has a jack of all trades playstyle and is also a very good character

>SFV has no defense! DLC characters are all shit!
>Capcom Cup champion wins with Guile
>SFV has no footies!
>Greatest fighting game player to ever live, Punk, dominates playing the most honest footies to ever grace Street Fighter

>I considered Sakura a waifu before I knew what that was

She was my first fap before i understood what a fap was. Couldn't even shoot a load of cum when i orgasamed.
