Why don't games use live action cutscenes anymore?
Why don't games use live action cutscenes anymore?
Annon I am going to drop one profound truth on you that will echo on forever.
If you have to ask, "Why is X this way?" In anything video game related, it is because of MUH GRAPHICS fags. They have done more harm to video games as a whole than anything else.
Because when gaming systems got powerful enough to handle full motion video everyone and their mother jumped on the idea.
It got associated with being cheesy and cheap so the well was poisoned.
Fine then lets just revel in the good old days
Not only are you wrong, you're also dumb.
Cost efficiency. Live Action costs a fuckload, requires a lot of set-up, has the possibility of really bad drama, and typically would now need at least one big name actor to really sell the Live Action factor.
>Muh Graphics defense force
Am I the only one that misses FMV games? They were like the B movies of vidya. So bad/cheesy that they were good.
>requires a lot of set up
>literally just a camera
>bad drama
>isnt that the point of these live action intros
>big name actor
>no
Live action is cheap as fuck to produce. Digital cameras have made video production costs drop so low it is retarded.
they're barely vidya-- at that point, i would much rather just watch a movie.
It's costly compared to CGI.
People did it back then because it was cheaper then CGI.
EA only held onto it because it's an integral part of C&C.
They ruin the cinematic experience.
SAG stuck its dick in the game industry for extra money.
...
Last NFS does.
>Tim trying not to lose his shit delivering this line
I miss when games could be dumb and cheesy
youtube.com
>He says to the person who actually wants more campy live action like RA3
Filming takes a LOT more than the camera. One of my college roommates is an extra, and the background stuff they do before shooting is way more extensive than people would think. Even sith what said, is still correct too. CGI is just flat cheaper.
They still make them. Check out The Bunker on Steam. It's about 2 hours long, but pretty interesting.
Quantum Break did it and it was the worst thing since my birth.
Yeah people hate fun, see
The live action was the best part about that game. It's horrendous gameplay was the real evil here.
>Quantum Break
I forgot that game existed.
I love the cutscenes in this game is much better than all farce awakens
There's been recently some FMV games, but in general, i don't think gaymerz would like to see something like this again.
>Cost efficiency. Live Action costs a fuckload
really? more than having to painstakingly animate every frame of a 5 minute cutscene for example?
It's called outsourcing it to eastern europe, india, or south america. they'll work for pennies
I wish they still did
youtube.com
Yep. Doing a 5 minute cutscene in LA can both take longer and cost more, depending on the quality of the cutscene.
oh I never thought of that
interesting. I always wondered how the fuck Metal Gear Solid games cold afford those hour long cutscenes
Alan Wake had great live action though. Dude even looked like the in-game model
youtube.com
yo buddy
>I always wondered how the fuck Metal Gear Solid games cold afford those hour long cutscenes
Doritos and Apple sponsorships
>trying not to lose his shit
I'm pretty sure the cracking is intentional because the character Cherdenko is unhinged.
Because they break the immersion and take the player out of the game.
Using in-game graphics for cutscenes was a huge leap forward for gaming.
where have you been, indiefags have been cranking them out.
>Be a kid
>Play Jedi Knight
>Hyped as fuck with all those live action cutscenes
>Years later Play JK2
>All the hype to the ground
I mean...JK2 was AWESOME but that thing had me disapointed the first time.
I remember seeing these cutscenes thinking "hey they used the same tech in the prequels!" Then you go watch the prequels and can't help but see the similarities
This.
Now go buy a nintendo Switch if you really love videogames thats it.
because they are cringe as fuck
Nikki, the best out there xp
I enjoyed NFS Carbon's live action vids, and that's a 200x game for ya =)
SPAHCE
In general pre-rendered/non-engine cutscenes (be they live action, anime, or 3D CG) have fallen out of style as the gap between what you can do with them and what you can do in-engine has shrunk. They made sense when your gameplay used sprites or low-poly models that couldn't do justice to what the characters/action was supposed to look like, but from the seventh gen onward the in-game assets you could make were usually good enough that the jarring effect of switching to pre-rendered video wasn't worth the increase in presentation quality.
Because every game tries to be very serious nowadays, there is no room for hamming it up.
