You probably aren't gonna be able to do much with Usalia in the main story, since she's essentially a tank. And Armor Knights are so effective at tanking that you don't need her at all. But she eventually gets some incredibly useful abilities, and paired with a weapon that automatically charges the Revenge gauge (you get them from sending ships out to investigate high-ranking Netherworlds), she's a highly useful utility character. But again, you won't be able to use most of that until Post Game.

I think i turned her into a melee, thanks to all the ways to boost stats it's not hard to go against what they start as. Near endgame I was using her for magichange since she turns into fists and main dude gets extra actions. End game was just a sage for nuking the whole map and the dark knight majin type with the ripple dmg and double attack. Would get surrounded, regular attack and hit everyone.
Its very fun. I'd say you should look into how to unlock the generics when you get the chance so you can get to work getting the ones you want sooner rather then later.
It's known as a grinding simulator, but there's actually a lot more than that to it, and a whole lot to like. And since the story's completely self-contained (barring one line in the ending that gives you an idea where this story takes place on the timeline), you shouldn't have any trouble with this game being your first. You won't know who the cameo characters are, but the game does a good enough job of giving you a quick rundown of their personalities during their recruitment missions.

I feel bad that I never really leveled her up, since her Evility is amazing. Unfortunately, all mages tend to play exactly the same way, and I already had Metallia.

Yeah, I fell you. I wish they would have kept the books from DD2.
Yeah, books needed a balancing, not a removal. Better weapon skills could have made the difference- I remember there being only one Book skill worth using over regular spells, and it was a secret move. I don't even remember how you got secret skills in that game.
An actual Magic Sword class of weapon would be nice, too. Like, pretty much the same skills that regular swords have, but running off INT instead of ATK. I feel like Magic Knights are constantly in a compromise over a lack of such a weapon class, to varying degrees of success.
How good is she ingame though?
She's actually really good. I'm fuzzy on the details, but I think that her innate Evility increases her damage by 10% for every unit that's died on the current map, and her Overload brings back all defeated enemies as allied guests. But you don't get her until Post Game, and as stated above, it's easy for someone else to have her role covered by then.

I actually did buy the Season Pass when the game first came out. It was nice being able to use all the cameo characters during the main story, and since I new I'd be playing for 300+ hours, I'd be getting my money's worth. But man, could I not shake the feeling that I had been Jew'd hard. Especially since all the content was clearly available from the get-go, but they drip-fed it to people who didn't want the whole pass anyway, just to tempt them into dropping those fifty bucks.

I think Majorita has a better character than Metallica, which was my main incentive for using her, she's truly best girl.
Majorita is my highest levelled character by far, she's 9999 with several reincarnations.
Conversely, I believe I have Killia on 12 with no reincarnations.
They kinda tried to fix this in 5 by giving Magic knights elemental versions of their sword skills. Still having an actual magic based sword would make things better.
Not sure if you know this, but here's a pro tip: in D5, the number of Reincarnations you have don't really matter. All the "yellow bar" bonus stats you get come from mastering Sub-Classes. If you have all the Sub-Classes mastered, you'll hit the base stat cap of 10mil in everything by the time you're Lv.9999 again.

A lot of people didn't like 3 but loved 4. Which version of it are you playing anyway?
there are some weird mechanics like blocks which confuse you, but story and character wise I loved it miles more than D2.

I played through 5 and liked the character setups for 4. Disgaea 3 seemed kind of boring.
3 is pretty much considered the bottom of the barrel for the series, at least the PS3 version. The Vita port fixed a lot, but the characters and story are pretty trash aside from Raspberyl (Mao, Almaz, and Sapphire are much better-written in their cameos in later games). D3 also added a lot of new features that just didn't work in its original incarnation that had to be ironed out in later games. D3 and DD2 are pretty skippable.

I didnt like 3 very much. It seems to be the one everyone either loves or hates. Just didnt click for me. Mao just seemed like a very poor main character. I liked the premise of the plot of 4, but some of the characters kinda killed it for me.

I liked how the story in D2 had a few twists that the game expected you to be able to figure out on your own, rather than beating you over the head with condescending exposition. But for the most part, the story was pretty boring and took some really long, pointless detours. I don't even know what the hell Yukimaru and Fubuki were doing in the game. And I'll never forgive what that game did to Etna. She was my favorite character in D1, and D2 turned her into an unlikable meme character that wouldn't stop breaking the fourth wall.
