So after I beat Persona 5, I had a hankering for some REAL SMT gameplay, since Sup Forums is always up it's own ass about it.
I have to say, though- Strange Journey's been pretty enjoyable so far.
Just left the Costco from hell (Carina) and started poking around the junkyard (Delphinus).
Anything I should watch out for? Any hot demons I should look out for or fuse?
General Advice?
(SMT General too, I guess.)
Benjamin Gray
Bump with my team after stuffing and mounting Horkos on the walls of the Red Sprite.
Jose Hernandez
>Any hot demons I should look out for or fuse? I think that there's a giant naked zebra lady, but idk if she's in this game
Benjamin Wood
Thinking of playing some SMT too. Is there a guide to SMT games? Which one should I play?
Oliver Allen
I'm probably like 20 hours way from Zebratits, if I had to guess.
Maybe less.
Oliver Garcia
Can you make Doppelganger thu fusion? He can reflect gun/phys and it's dope
Josiah Allen
Different user here, I've picked up Soul Hackers recently and I keep getting my ass kicked in the Akane Mall Warehouse and wanted to know what demons are good healers in the level 35-45 range.
Elijah Thompson
There is, though I don't have the guide for it on hand. The stories are self-contained for the most part; most people recommend starting with IV or IV:A on the 3ds.
Bentley Evans
>neutral Good job getting Doppelganger at least, he's good the entire game
Adam Foster
You should be pretty close to getting mitamas. 6 Points of STR do make a difference. Horkos+Deathbound+mitamas is pretty alright. I think Pisaca gives a source for Grand Tack, 2nd best gun skill in the game. Trust this guy, he's your friend.
Christian Gutierrez
Digital Devil Saga if you want a traditional JRPG. Nocturne or SJ if you want what makes SMT unique. A lot of people woudl recommend Nocturne over SJ for your first game because SJ is considered more difficult, but I think SJ is more grounded and a better place to start, the only really tough part is the teleporter mazes, which are more annoying than they are difficult.
You could also go for SMT IV like this user said bu it has a slow, very tough and sometime just poorly designed beginning, so it can be offputting.
Blake Martin
Yep! You totally can. I made on just before fighting Horkos.
Nicholas Cox
Enjoy
Josiah Price
SMT3 Nocturne is a good choice. One of the best entrance points to mainline SMT. Then you can try SMT1 and SMT2 or even try the remakes of the original Megami Tensei games on SNES.
Devil Summoner is pretty good. Devil Survivor if you want a grid RTS style game. Digital Devil Saga is the most straight-faced JRPG of the spinoffs.
Aaron Lee
>Momunofu Dude is always a laugh
Camden Hernandez
I haven't really been given any obvious choices on Law/Chaos yet- my neutrality is entirely based on chain attacks for damage.
Horkus was weak to lighting, which is why I had Raiju, it's kinda mediocre otherwise.
Adrian Cox
I am skeptical of the masked man
Landon Anderson
>go pickup the stuffed Mothman it's the real thing
Jackson White
Trust him, son of man, he would not steer you wrong.
Jack Gonzalez
HALT, SON OF MOTHMAN
Nicholas Johnson
What a coincidence you bring this game up on Mother's Day
Jayden Davis
Mastema is your friend.
Chase Powell
I am skeptical of her forehead
Samuel Bell
Tell me about him. Why does he wear the mask?
William Johnson
Perhaps he is wondering why you would shoot a man, before throwing him into the Schwarzwelt?
Nathaniel Gonzalez
Be wary of your alignment. It's weirdly easy to change.
That's it. If you're that far in you know what to do. I went into this game with no advice, you can too.
Daniel Rogers
>decide to play all mainline games >start SMT2 since I played 1 some time ago >it's a fucking chore but finish it eventually >start Nocturne >get fucking destroyed
I have like 11 hours in, I feel like I should play on normal instead of getting getting my ass handed to me left and right but I don't really wanna play all the way up again.
Dominic Flores
If you weren't aware of it already, I believe SJ goes by Pokemon rules and experience is split between you and all the demons you have out. If you wanted to grind the MC (and you will need to grind a fuckton for certain bosses), switch out all your demon bros whenever you end a fight
Colton Baker
Hard modes in SMT games are generally not worth it unless you are feeling particularly masochistic.
Ayden Hughes
I never knew that...
Could have saved me sometime getting ready for Mem Aleph
Brandon Evans
SMT3 on hard is really fucking hard. It's not worth it.
Angel Jones
That's actually really helpful; thanks user. I was wondering why exp seemed to drop off a cliff once I outleveled an enemy by a handful of levels- I figured it was an antigrind mechanic.
Jace Fisher
I was doing fine until I got to Matador. I just beat Dante and I can't get through a dungeon without savestating or wasting everything I have. Not sure if I have the energy to keep going or start over.
Jaxon Miller
The only thing you ever need to know about mainline SMT games is that true power comes from friendship and the bonds and experiences you share with those in your life.
Jacob Ramirez
>Want to play SJ >DSJ comes out Soon™ so im holding back HMMM
Anthony King
Matador has always been the wake up call boss for SMT3.
Elijah Bailey
just fuse doppleganger and breeze through bosses with reflected damage
Jace Nguyen
This was exactly *why* I decided to play it.
Folks have been freaking out that the non-yukiko is going to ruin the game, or make it persona, or something.
Figured I'd get the vanilla experience before playing DSJ in a year or so.
Ayden Sanchez
Remember doppelganger's reflect becomes more powerful the weaker he is
Joseph Collins
No, you have it right, that's also a thing. Being overlevelled means you get less EXP, but having less guys out means it won't be distributed as much
Shits kinda unfair since all the bitchin demons you want always seem to be 5-10 levels away
Jace Hughes
...
Liam Rivera
I suppose if it becomes a problem I can summon another one at base level.
He's way too useful with all his buff skills and reflects to NOT use him, though.
Kevin Perry
I played all the game on hard mode but I got stuck at the end against the true final boss. you can avoid this by going for a STR build tho
Joseph Miller
Is it actually viable to put all of your level up stats into STR in Nocturne?
Austin Lee
Provided you don't die from getting hit and missing, it's viable.
Parker Jenkins
Mem Aleph would be hot if she had better hair
Logan Watson
yeah. the game just hates magic. there's no mind charge and all the physical skills do waaay more dmg. Also if you go for the TDE you get a skill that only makes them stronger.
Nolan Wilson
On Normal? Yeah, no problem. On Hard you will definitely want some EN to actually survive shit. Some AG for accuracy is nice too. But if you're dead set on WORLD OF STR, go for it. Just remember that Masakados gives +10 to all stats if you're going for all magatamas.
Luke Gomez
Hell I started as a magic fag and ended up using phys skills because they are far much better.
Alexander Perez
Mostly, but not all
Asher White
Why would you play strange journey when there's a remake on the way
Eli Sullivan
See Also I can emulate on my phone and it beats the shit out of any mobile game.
Jaxon Watson
BECAUSE IM LE OLDSCHOOL SMTFAG AND NEW SMT IS FOR NOOBS!!!!!
Jack Phillips
get ebin jojo reference and blow up everything
Nicholas Bell
Relent. We don't act like this in SMT threads.
Christopher Torres
How do you deal with phone emulators? I really can't stand having a button overlay (and by extension my fingers) covering a fairly large part of the screen.
Adam Morgan
Doomguy can literally solo the extra secret boss Strongest SMT protag ever
Leo Edwards
>Strongest SMT protag ever Patently wrong.
Hudson Fisher
SMT games have never been hard unless you consider difficulty RNG bullshit.
Caleb Bennett
It was less awful with certain older games since you can force all the buttons to the bottom.
You also rarely use the bottom screen in SJ so it isn't too awful.
It was worse when I played something like Ghost Trick the used the bottom screen more readily.
Overall though, you just shrink the buttons and learn to deal. Getting a bigger phone helps too.
I've been able to make sizable dents in my DS backlog that I wouldn't have otherwise playing on my phone.
Nathan Murphy
I've died a handful of times, mainly from running into a blind pack that shitwrecks me, or going blind into a boss.
The game has been fair so far though, I never feel like its tedious.
Here come the powerlevels. We can all CHIM YHWH out of existence, user.
Ethan Martinez
I can't really think of a handheld/console other than the NES to have few enough buttons to make that worthwhile. Maybe I'll grab a SNES one and try to play SMTI and II. Worst case scenario, it's bad and I stop.
Easton Brooks
Are there other SMT games with a similar feel/setting to Devil Survivor? I like the concept of weird demon shit going down in everyday society
SJ has you fucking off to Antarctica, Nocturne tales place after civilization gets trashed, haven't tried anything else yet
Nathaniel Long
DemiKids maybe. Soul Hackers is in a sci-fi society, but they're definitely in society.
Nolan Bennett
Actually, the early Persona games are exactly that.
Nathan Perry
Persona 2's gameplay is some of the worst out there though.
Anthony Rogers
Devil Summoner?
Wyatt White
SMT1, if you like old games to the point of being unplayable.
Carter Perez
>tfw devil summoner 1 and if... will never be translated
Julian Flores
SMT 1
Cameron Roberts
It's an improvement over persona 1 though
Daniel Price
this, even if it's not modern day, it is still happening in a non-demon society
Caleb King
SMT1 and Soul Hackers.
Colton Peterson
no it isnt
Isaac Hernandez
>Tfw Persona 1 is my favourite battle system
What happened, user? Too many damage types for you?
Kayden Sanchez
Here's what the PSP one I have looks like on my phone, for reference.
Jaxson Hall
Does P1 have Tera skills?
Andrew Gonzalez
It's not like any of them matter
Ethan Davis
Play SMT 3. It has one of the best fucking atmosphere in an RPG. I love that apocalyptic shit. Graphics are old but it augments the desolation and darkness.
Sebastian Peterson
Persona 1 has the pointless grid and for most fights you just gun down everything.
Lincoln Ortiz
I still don't like how much the control stick and dpad cover, but I may as well give it a go. Is Retroarch still the way to go for phone emulation?
Matthew Harris
>SMT thread >devolves into Persona discussion
gee
Joshua Roberts
P1 rules, fuck everyone that memes on it as being bad.
Samuel Reyes
>Shin Megami Tensei: Persona Eat a dick anyways, there was little persona discussion anyways
Elijah Peterson
>Finish SJ >Start Nocturne on Hard because I feel like I'm ready for anything >The very first enemies I encounter in the game kill me in a single turn
Hahaha, hard game very fun hahaha
>Painfully make my way to Matador >Shit Party >No healing items, no SP, no Makka >Grinding is impossible because the enemies are too strong
And then I started emulating p4.
Kayden Ross
If you're emulating psp, just use the mainline ppsspp app. The retroarch core is horridly outdated.
Isaiah Bennett
Retroarch covers most shit up to ps1/gba.
It's basically just a bundle of emulators you can get separately though.
DraStic and ppsspp are what I use for the DS and PSP, respectively.
Isaac Thompson
60 000 Macca well spent.
Where the hell is the Gigantic!?
Angel Martinez
>Grinding >In an SMT
>Picking Hard >In an SMT
>Going to P4 >Of every single MegaTen game
Wyatt Moore
>Kaneko and Cozy have given up on SMT AGES AGO >SMTfags still refuse to die FACE IT IT'S OVER SMTARDS
Gavin Davis
>rush into hard in a game you've never played before >getting upset late in the game at matador to realize that hard is actually fucking hard Literally get the level 18 demon from fusion that's null to force and has media and it's easy. Matador loses two turns everytime he uses a force ability, even if he catches a force vulnerable party member
Easton Jenkins
>7 now kiss
Liam Allen
FUCKING PERSONACHADS IT'S NOT FAIR EYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH
Jose Price
I never understood why persona fans are chads by default. I have seen nothing involving persona with chads
Gabriel Smith
Is there a decent way to emulate phone games on PC so I can play SMT1 again? I already played the SNES version with the fan translation and kind of just want to see what's different in my experience since it's been awhile. Every time I try to get some sort of phone emulator on PC its full of ads and downloading random bullshit.
Jonathan Brown
YOU'LL LOVE SECTOR ERIDANUS
YOU'LL FUCKING LOVE IT
I HOPE YOU LIKE PUZZLES TOO
LIKE STEPING ON SOME FUCKING RANDOM TILE ON SOME TIME OF THE DAY
FUCK man I don't know, this game didn't leave me happier than I was before playing it, I don't know, its a strange feeling.
Zachary Green
Persona protags >Larger dicks >Fun to be around >Interesting conversation anytime you want >Nicely dressed and groomed >Crack jokes all the time >Will take you places >Broad social spectrum >Know interesting people you will be introduced to >Behave like real men >Smile on their faces most of the time >Can dance and cook >Chills in the school
Mainline """protags""" >Tiny dicks >Socially awkward >Quiet >Inhibited socially >Boring >Prefer to stay home >Hate to dance >Sad faces >Make you cringe >Creepy >Often have either anger or anxiety issues >Shoots up the school
Kayden Young
Do it for him, user
Kayden Jones
>tfw using that PHYS repel on doppel on endgame bosses >I think it was the nigger >he hit fucking hard >the demon is like lvl 20 >the boss is like 50 lvls stronger >demon just reflected like infinite damage
I laughed so hard hahahaha.
Michael Torres
Eridanus was great, but people here are always complaining about it. And so were Grus and Horologium.
