The main issue I have with sandbox sandbox games is that regardless of how much of a blast they are, they are ultimately a fuck around game which leaves a lot less replayability in my opinion.

Zelda series has always been one of my favorite series but I'm not going to give any of their games a pass just because. In an unbiased opinion, the game is an 8. The lack of a proper story really killed me with this game. The other things in this game just piled on and I can't give this game anything higher than an 8.

Not sure if people these days are just so used to the recent shitty mediocre games that anything that's good becomes the best game ever. And it's true, so many games that released over the past few years were mediocre.

I played BotW on the Switch and agree about it not really being much more than an 8/10. Sure, in terms of exploration, world interactivity and other open world and sandbox mechanics, it's a 10/10. But I don't need 120+ fucking shrines that all look the same giving me more stamina and hearts I don't need, or korok seed nr. 566 out of 900 for more inventory space. I want to find something unique when exploring, and there just isn't enough of that. Even a fucking dragon on top of a snowy mountain leads to another fucking shrine. The damage calculations in the game are pure trash; you either get hammered by trash mob goblins for 8 hearts or you upgrade your armor to trivialize damage. The main dungeons were fun (especially the one in the desert) but they were way too short and there's too few of them.

Personally, I found Darksiders II to be more entertaining. Running around an empty world fighting the exact same enemies over and over gets pretty repetitive. At least DSII has some variety.

Recently replayed OoT and it's only slightly overrated, for its time it was amazing though. About to finish up my replay of Twillight Princess and it's even better than i remembered. You're right that there is some exaggerated fanboy-ism, but Nintendo does make some pretty fun games...
