In Japan he is and has always been genderless, and was always identified in a gender neutral way.

Genderless dream construct, if I recall that's mainly to help facilitate dualizing with the kids since it'd be kinda weird to have a boy basically fusing with a girl or vice versa.
So is Reala, for what it's worth. Though I guess they're more male in design (and especially VA in JoD, while Nights has a female VA they sound androgynous enough to kinda keep the theme going.)
