Because they're struggling to add enough original material to Splatoon 2 to justify it being an actual sequel. It won't be delayed, and they'll get the usual 'Nintendo Bonus' senselessly high review scores, but they're still (as always) keeping the extreme long-term brand value in mind.

I'm with you, OP. I'm considering buying a Switch solely for Splatoon 2 and I couldn't give less of a shit about Arms.

If any Nintendo game were released under a random indie studio name it would either be a breakout hit 8+/10 game, or a total bomb. Simply by being Nintendo-branded it is guaranteed to be 8/10 at a minimum.

It's being developed on an insanely fast schedule (especially by Nintendo standards). They didn't even commit to 'Splatoon 2' (vs 'Splatoon HD') until about a year ago.

Splatoon's reviews were silly. And they were basically all highly inaccurate within the first week if not the first couple of days.

ARMs looks like a great local multiplayer game, but I have no interest in playing it online and I don't want to buy another pair of Joycons when there are games with local multiplayer that I can play without.

Dude, Splatoon OG was made in less than a year. That's incredibly small for any new Nintendo IP. To be fair though, it did show with the launch game. The free dlc stages, modes, weapons, gear, and music really showed that they cared though.

Splatoon 2 looks like a vast polish and feels great. New weapons, music, style changes, maps, campaign, modes, old amiibo compatability.
It's a sequel that surely time and love has been sunk into if we're judging purely off of the dlc and splatfests added to the original.

Also, if they don't have the Ika dlc from the first one I will be so fucking pissed holy shit.

Honestly depending on the Global Testfire for ARMS, I think that'll be my major deciding factor for the game. If it's something I can get into, enjoy, and want to keep playing more of, I'll buy it, but if it isn't, I'll probably just see if it'll ever go on sale and pick it up then.
I'm glad that Nintendo's doing these things with more than just Splatoon, which sadly I missed the Testfire for 2 because my Switch hadn't arrived yet. It's honestly a good way to market your product and see what people think of it.
