Custom games were unique, experimental, and super fun. Every day that you launched Battle.net you knew you could expect something new and surprising to play.
Enlightenment Era: 2005-2008
The breadth of games being hosted have started to become more homogenized. DOTA has started to gain some prominence. On the plus side Frozen Throne's release gave some more map customizability features such as custom 3D unit models among other things like naval units which kept things fresh. Map makers were figuring out the limits of the map editor. Someone programmed the first host bot and released it to the public at the end of 2008.
Dark Age: 2009-2010
Host bots overwhelm the custom games list with a shit load of empty games for DOTA, with a few bots for Vamp Fire and a small selection of TD's, and just general spam URLs to scam websites. The number of players logged onto Battle.net has begun to drop dramatically. Warcraft 3 became synonymous with DOTA.
Ded Gaem: 2010-current
The few remaining non-DOTA players hoping that Blizzard would one day ban host bots or have them filtered-by-default either stopped gaming in general or went off to Starcraft 2 only to be disappointed by how shitty it was compared to Warcraft 3.
>enlightenment era 2005-2008 WC3 was already dead by late 2004, with DOTA autohost bots taking over 90% of the custom games list.
Dylan Powell
Fuck DOTA, i never enjoyed that shitty map and having to swim through hundreds of fuckin dota "servers" to find a fuckin tower defense or some survival game was pain
Brody Green
>DOTA autohost bots taking over 90% of the custom games list.
Host bots came out in 2008. DOTA got its first WCG tournament in 2005.
Matthew Flores
>custom games no, user, you are the cancer

Asher Brown
Can you source me on that? Because I'm convinced that WC3 went to shit around the same time that I started playing WoW, which was mid-2004. It was because of them that WoW replaced my freetime over WC3.
Lincoln Mitchell
this is bullshit i played WC3 back in 2004
Aaron Hill
>tryhard madfag detect
Elijah Taylor
How is playing the game in it's intended form making me "le pro gam3r"? Wc3 was developed as a strategy game with 1v1 matches as a balancing gold standard. You're just using it's engine for retarded meme maps
John Foster
golden era: 2002-2005
dota era: 2005-ded
fuck dota.
Thomas Bell
>Wc3 was developed as a strategy game with 1v1 matches as a balancing gold standard. lmfao did you even play warcraft 3? the game's balance is whack with some races dominating 1v1 while the others dominate team games
Christopher Lewis
Ah custom games, for the casual retards who were to shit to play regular vs mode
Julian Price
Nobody. And I mean: Nobody would give a shit about WC3 without its map editor.
Which saddens me, because it's still the greatest map editor a game ever had, especially with TFT
Joseph Lopez
It's time to move on, user.
We know you miss the golden age of gaming because, well, you were younger and didn't give a fuck.
Your nostalgia is taking over, just like the rest of the people in the world who play vidya. Just move on.
Alexander Perry
dont listen to Sup Forums's top underachievers
Landon Gutierrez
Well blizzard helped kill wc3 when they forced delay upon everyone for no good reason. I tried to get back into it like 2 months ago but it's not fun to play with 2 second delay and on private servers such as w3arena I just get shat on.
Charles Young
>which was mid-2004
So before WoW was even released?
Kayden Ward
Didn't WoW come out like November 2003? I guess I got a year wrong
Ryan Taylor
Sup Forums is casual central of the internet, they like to claim they are "hard core" but whenever it actually comes to proving thier skill vs another opponent they all of a sudden hate anything not massively casual
Eli Hall
same buttmad esports-watching fag detected
Eli Kelly
if they watched esports they would at least know wc3 is not balanced for 1v1 in the slightest
Carter Nguyen
fuck off meleefag losers

>le ebin vanilla faggot

He's talking about WC3.
You are literally retarded. congratulations you little Asperger-bot
Leo Reed
He's not talking about WoW, retard.
Dylan Ortiz
>is a warcraft thread >is obvious bait thread >will inevitably get bogged down by WoW dicsussion because /wowg/ is a literal clutsterfuck of furries, autism and JoJo the shitposer >this happens in EVERY single WC thread

Kevin Foster
Now I want to play Enfos
Or Castle Fight or Darwin's Island
Anthony Hernandez
>will inevitably get bogged down by WoW dicsussion because /wowg/ is a literal clutsterfuck of furries, autism and JoJo the shitposer so which one are you since you brought it up?
Luis Sanders
>because /wowg/ is
are we in /wowg/ right now, or are we AWAY from /wowg/ right now?
you know, there might not be as many games as before, but i could install wc3 and log on right now and find many things to play besides dota
Joseph Martinez
My friend, thats a post from /d2g/, you fucking moron. Go find me a thread on Sup Forums that has ASSFAGGOTS
Joshua Cox
>playing autism maps like run kitty run holy shit lmao get some taste, i bet you played the RP maps and life of a peasant too you cringelord
Wyatt Perry
Maybe at scrub levels. In pro games the races were well balanced.
Blake Ortiz
You are delusional if you think Undead are as strong as Orc or NE in 1v1. There's a reason WC3 is getting a balance patch soon while BW isn't.
Adam Johnson
>le Fuck off
Cooper Bennett
No.
Henry Brooks
>tfw out of all of the AoS games on WC3, DotA Allstars became the most popular even though it had one of the worst game designs, terrible community, and was filled with stolen content
Jackson Wilson
Source on the balance patch? I'd like to see what they want to change.
Nathan Clark
yeah that's most popular wc3 maps
Jonathan Russell
Which of these maps would you like to see made into a full game, like Dota?
Which of these maps do you think would ACTUALLY be successful as a stand-alone game?
Connor Sanchez
find-the-traitor maps have potential to be standalone games I think
There was one RTS that was fucking bad ass. You started on a planet and could zoom out to see 4 worlds on the map. You eventually worked out to go to outer space and could drop pod marines and even a spider infestation onto the planet. Shit was dope as fuck. Some of the spaceships could even go planetside. They'd be fucking huge of course but it was so worth it
Eli Bailey
>worst game designs sure smells like mad cuz bad >terrible community can't argue with that one >filled with stolen content pic related
Lincoln Martin
Dark Deeds, Memestasis, Uther Party, and Warlocks
James Long
>Not playing SC custom games instead I mean sure the map editor wasn't near as good, but it didn't have Dota cancer.
Ryan Butler

Asher Jones
>dark deeds >uther party Did you mention those autism maps on purpose as a joke or did you actually enjoy them? That's embarrassing as hell mate
Anthony Martin
Enfos, a million times Enfos. So much fun playing it.
Josiah Peterson
It's not dead, just filled with chinks and eastern europeans.
Nathaniel Cox
WERE MY DBZ BROTHERS AT!?
if you play future trunks or the Androids, your a huge faggot.
Charles King
None of them. They were all pretty fucking bad. The only reason Warcraft 3 was fun was because it had immense variety. Playing the same map repeatedly is like going to a really low quality buffet and eating only one thing. Quantity is more important than quality.
Nathaniel Howard
>>worst game designs >sure smells like mad cuz bad Nope. The majority of the hero designs are incredibly dull, as the game took a quantity over quality approach. The same goes for items and the recipe system was extremely clunky. There's very little strategy to engage in regarding the actual team/AI in comparison to other AoS maps. Denying is the result of laziness and people think it somehow adds complexity, when it just adds tediousness rather than fun, which is really an ongoing theme for the game in general.
>>filled with stolen content >pic related You can't be serious. Allstars from the get-go was a combination of stolen ideas. Over the course of many years code (literally line by line), ideas, and artwork were stolen from other maps, and that is a well known fact particularly for those were involved in custom map making.
Juan Gonzalez
X hero siege was fun as hell
Gavin White
Some good survival pvp stuff with crafting and basebuilding would be good but people are slowly making these. uther party would make a great cheap steam game to kill time with friends. None of the good TD maps are listed in the image. Castle fight and civilization were great. Seriously tho, why isn't YouTD on that list?
Fuck I miss spending like 8 hours a day after school working on that shit every night. I'm one of the creators of Pyramid Escape by the way, but I abandoned the project when WoW released.
Levi Reed
Arent they making a game based on warlocks?
Jordan Hughes
>bots in 2004 Fuck off retard.
Aiden Murphy
I listed them because both have excellent replayability and the capability for normies to enjoy them. They are not all "autism maps"; that designation goes to WC3 RPGs.
Levi Ortiz
yeah just checked, there's several. check out spellsworn on steam.
Isaac Cox
>You can't be serious still waiting for that proof
Brody James
dark deeds is definitely an autism map
Jordan Phillips
i never played this, and i regret it
how did the map play like?
Nathan Johnson
I found it funny that Blizzard only kept it up for such a short period of time so that only 6 maps ended up in the hall of fame. At least the 6 that are there are deserving.
Cooper Smith
I played Cell
Nathaniel Parker
>game comes with map tools >people use said tools to make maps
How is this not "playing as intended"? Do you hate fun?
Adam Clark
>Footman Frenzy by HatoUP except it was made by Nosferatus and HatoUP and his faggot clan stole it and stole all the development credit
Brayden Cook
i miss hero siege
Ethan Brown
i never understood the appeal of that map, the only times i played, people just picked the most broken heroes and it was just a matter of killing stuff in a tunnel
Justin Sanders
I could drag up plenty of archived threads on WC3 map making communities and lines of stolen code, but I'm not going to waste my time. You must have been completely oblivious if you didn't know Allstars was filled with stolen ideas. Hell, it's called Allstars because the hero pool initially consisted of heroes taken from other DotA variants, without the creators' permissions of course, including Eul until he started getting paid years later.
Camden Peterson
no competition with other players, everyone's a winner no matter how shitty you are.
it's a terrible map to be honest
Daniel Ross
>buy a bottle of Cola >drink Cola >stick the bottle in your butthole >"The bottle was included, so I'm using it as intended"

>Goku >you decide the entire game; if you rush Broly and the sagas the whole game is already over, no one can compete >Vegeta >like Goku but slightly worse since you don't get the Broly bonus >Gohan >like Goku but slightly worse >Future Trunks >trash, might as well turn into Krillin and use the cheat that lets you get 5000 attributes in 20 minutes >Piccolo >by far the worst character; shit even if you use the cheat to get a huge stat multiplier, only gets one beam, complete embarrassment, the only character that can never maintain its stat multiplier not to mention it only applies to strength, what the fuck >Androids >only good if your opponents are mentally retarded and let you grind a bit >Buu >technically could be better than any of the Z-fighters in the long run because candy grinding is strong, but no good players will let you candy grind >Bebi >you will never actually possess anyone worth possessing >Broly, only use is to use the cheat that lets Broly get infinite stats >only use is to die to Goku and give him +300 attributes or to cheat with Bebi; a good Broly will always type -stuck at the start so that he dies before Goku can get to him >Cell >actually somewhat decent, but a good Gohan will always kick your shit in >Metal Cooler >in the long run, no one can beat him. If the game goes on for 30 minutes and no one is stopping his grind, the game is over, there are now 500 metal cooler clones that no one can defeat
This map was such a disappointment. The game is skewed so much so in the favor of the Z-fighters. With good players, it is entirely impossible to win as evil.
Dominic Torres
>I'm not going to waste my time sure, because it's not true and you have no proof whatsoever. I'm not as stupid as most of these children on Sup Forums who will believe anything they hear or see with absolutely no supporting evidence.
Adrian Ward
>putting cola bottles up your ass is not allowed
Josiah Perry
you go around killing npcs and to get stronger. than bosses from the show and movies will spawn and you have to kill them first to gain even more power or special items before everyone else. your in a team, either the good guys (goku, picoolo, gohan etc) or the bad guys (cell buu, cooler etc)
if the other team kills everyone on the opposite team, that team wins (everyone made sure not to kill everyone to make the game last longer)
Ryder Jenkins
I mained island defense. It has a lot of depth and could easily succeed as a standalone game
Oliver Reed
>lock brown (freezer) asap >create a couple clones and put them on patrol randomly across the map >rinse and repeat >babby tier saiyan players cry in all chat >win and start another lobby haha nothing beats a good freezer
Ian Hughes
>helms deep
i loved that game. hell, i was such a big lord of the rings fanboy at the time.
Easton Anderson
You are fucking stupid if you're such a fan of what is now known as DotA and know nothing of its roots. It even says the following on the fucking wiki: >DotA Allstars, originally created and developed by custom map makers Meian and Ragn0r, who took the most popular heroes and compiled them into one map
That same spirit of "compiling" (AKA plagiarism AKA stealing) things continued throughout its existence on WC3. You can literally go ask anyone else who was a map maker on WC3 and you would hear the same. It's not speculation; it's a fact.
Thomas Evans
>you go around killing npcs to get stronger more specifically you aggro as many npc as you can and then level your beam attacks and destroy the stack thats following you
the route you take in the first minute of game to aggro and kill as many npcs as possible without dying literally decides the game right there
Adam Williams
>it's a fact because i typed something out with no cited sources whatsoever
Parker Hughes
Oh, sorry, I can't find any peer-reviewed journals regarding DotA history for your fucking perusal. The best I can give you is the wiki which already proves the foundation of my claim. The rest of it is archived in countless discussions and threads. Even though you claimed to be "not as stupid as most of these children on Sup Forums" it would appear that you must be very new to Warcraft and the internet in general. Otherwise, you've simply had your head extremely deep in the sand.
Thomas Edwards
can i play any of them alone?
Jacob Gray
I dont know why YouTD never got very popular.
It was by far the most high quality tower defense map ever produced by the community with balanced, high variety towers with lots of intricate mechanics and systems. Even the towers looked great with their pseudo-custom models and not 5 variations of the cannon tower in different colors.
Tons of replayability with randomized spawns, tower research, items and the builder xp system.
Sure, it required near autism to beat (240 on atleast medium) but it was objectively the best solo TD map. Could even be played in teams or as 1 team if that's your thing.
Its even still updated to this day and it's the only game I still log on battle.net to play.
>mfw beating the final level 240 boss for the first time
Owen Butler
Wait is that true? Fuck man, my whole life has been a lie.
Jose Price
>SotDRP I could build better shit in that map than in the actual editor. Good times.
Wyatt Taylor
>seeing that druid circle dance for the first time after beating it I still occasionally play a couple of matches while watching a movie.
Owen Nelson
LTA & LTF are basically improved versions of daow
Blake Brooks
Played YouTDby myself earlier today. It really is a ton of fun - especially when you can get the advanced heroes. The game is kinda difficult though, the way I win is by getting the priest and getting some sweet auras on him. Don't know any way to get as far with other builds.
I really hope that custom games can make a return somehow, so many fun games I'll never get to play again.
Samuel Young
I've played it so much now that I can do 240 mdium pretty consistently by now in roughly 2 hours
X-regen is usually what ends my runs, that mob mod is busted with dps requirements
Jayden Turner
