hmm, yeah it happens pretty often in Japanese games (Tameem, Kojimbo, Kamiya, Itoi naming the most important story location after himself, etc), but I can't really think of a good western game example.

Apparently Gordon Freeman was pretty based around Gabe Newell when he worked for Microsoft (Black Mesa was essentially Microsoft for science)

I don't think a simple cameo is the same as making yourself the protagonist or the protagonists love interest.
