Why do Japanese games with romance options have such shallow characters nowadays? Doesn't the target audience get tired of the same old cliches and archetypes? Why do people still eat up this stuff?
I think the issue is far more noticeable in other mediums like anime, but it still holds over to vidya to an extent.

The "target audience" are cripplingly lonely virgins who are willing to overlook anything and everything as long as they get to push a button and have an anime girl say "I love you".

Because that's all these lonely faggots know about women. Plus, 2D girls are made to be the ideal image of a woman. Also, for those who use it as an escape (and I'm sure a LOT of them do) they'd rather have some cliche archetype than some accurate depiction of the real thing.

A few reasons for this.

1. Remember that American and European media is not much better, they just have different archetypes and you're so used to them you don't notice them as much. Because we consume anime and weeb shit in the way we do, the stereotypes are more evident.

2. The japanese, more than us, LOVE their fucking stereotypes. You can equate it to them being very conservative or just them being very homogenous. If you look at real japanese novels or other "higher" works of fiction, you don't get this same stuff as much. But you have to remember that anime and manga ans shit is not considered a "serious" work of fiction. Its an entertainment product for most people. You'll get the "Watchmen" equivalents of complex and well made manga or anime, but they're not the norm. Light novels are a good example: They're basically paper back trash; pushing no boundaries and doing nothing but play up the same safe tropes in order to sell. VN's too. Much like the popular movies in America, the makers of anime know what sells and will provide it.

3. Romance, especially multi-route romance, is generally designed as an escapist fantasy rather than a true story. The demographic is such that they want to make the girls specific to "Types" while also being general enough to let people read deeper or more complex feelings or intents into things. To put it simply: They need these games to appeal to picky, autistic NEETS, so instead of making in depth characters with personalities that might turn the consumer off, they instead go with broadly attractive stereotypes which don't give the consumer any real reason to be turned off to them.
