Just made a thread an hour or so ago about playing STALKER and using mods or whatever. Got lots of shit for using STALKER Complete. And after playing with the starter kits, I gotta say that Sup Forums was right. Complete sucks ass compared to the little amount I've already played. Thanks guys

You're welcome. I was there, made one of the posts.

How are you finding it so far?

As stated in last thread its harder, in that my accuracy is garbage. But graphics are gorgeous

Attaboy.
Yeah, the starting gear IS shit, on purpose. Like someone said, instead of using invisible walls and other bullshit excuses so often seen in other games, STALKER's only "restriction" that is kinda stopping ya from running from the beginning to Chernobyl NPP are your shitty hobo-tier weapons and suits. It's doable, but not really recommended.

The later gear improves exponentially, but so does the challenge. Something mods like Complete totally ruin.

Ray of hope when?

Neat, a STALKER thread!

In case there are some potential rookies lurking ITT, thinking of starting this magnificent series, Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links: Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

Right after the release of Gunslinger. ;_;

wait for the army patrol to get out of the aggro range of the checkpoint and blow them away for their rifles
or use the sawn off with darts/slugs

Right. Ambushing roving bands of bandits for some loot right now. Leather jacket isn't doing much right now

Yea I rushed a checkpoint at that train bridge. Managed to get some rifles and grenades out of it

There's a merc suit stashed in the roof of one of the buildings at the rookie village.
youtube.com/watch?v=Jfl-bKOqCts

you can find some pretty neat rookie gear for 100% free, if you explore the places carefully.

I just hate how people spill the beans of this one like it would be an obligatory knowledge. It's almost as bad as recommending the Complete mod; ruins the feeling of exploration and survival the start has.

the odds of finding the merc suit are almost equal to finding the broken army suit that's not even supposed to be in the game.

How to get these to run on win 10? asking for a friend haha

seriously though fuck windows 10 just want to play some stalker

I did find it all by myself on my first playthrough. It was still a Sunrise suit back then as well.
Back in 07, the basics of the Half-Lifan' hadn't totally been forgotten by the players.

Thanks for reminding me never to "upgrade" from W7 Ultimate.

Does compatibility mode work?

I never had a problem running it on Win10. But I use Steam version and not retail so not sure

I had a few problems trying to start it today, if your issue is a blank screen with the sound still playing I ran in compatibility with windows vista and that seems to have got it working.

any mods to improve performance for toasters?

I was introduced to STALKER through Sup Forums and after 2 years, i still love it so damn much.

I even completed MISERY 2.1. Gotta say that the other games don't feel nearly as difficult anymore.

Also BEST GUN

Starter Packs. See If your toaster REALLY is a toaster, setting the rendering mode to Static Lighting (DX8) is the first logical step. Instantly skyrockets the performance on any modern-ish machine.

My laptop with nothing but 2ghz i3 CPU and Intel HD Graphics 3000 gets average of 75+ fps like that, with otherwise ~High settings, with Starter Pack's texture mods.

I found out about STALKER in a gaming magazine back in 2005 or so, and it seemed interesting as hell. Noticed a couple years later that it'd come out, but the initial reviews were only "OK", so I was a bit worried it'd become just another generic tunnel shooter along the way.

Fortunately that was not the case, and first patches fixed the game to stable state.
10 years later (jesus fuck!), I've put 1000s of hours to all three games, with and without mods. And to be honest, threads like these always make me want to return to the Zone once again.

>I even completed MISERY 2.1. Gotta say that the other games don't feel nearly as difficult anymore.
as an AMK1.4 fan, Misery 2.11 wasn't even that bad. Even with the "Black Road" and "Dark Mode" both enabled, I ended up being OP as fuck by the time I hit the Yanov station.

Care to give me a quick rundown on AMK? Sounds interesting if makes MISERY babby.

How can you have missed THE literal granddaddy of all STALKER overhaul mods? It's a literal classic, and like many (used to) agree: the definitive STALKER experience.

Misery has tons of borderline clutterous stuff that definitely can make it even more challenging than AMK, but just in different ways. AMK sticks to original aesthetics and feels, but cranks up damage and restores cut content. Also has some other surprises, that especially the fans of the Roadside Picnic may recognize and appreciate.

>Care to give me a quick rundown on AMK?

Complete is casual mode. This game wasn't meant to be easy, it relies 100% on its extremely oppressive atmosphere.
My problem with the game is that being a hobo stalker is the best part of the game and as soon as I get gud gear it becomes piss easy because I already know how the AI behaves.

Ah. pardon me but i haven't given nearly as much time to SoC than CoP. But now i have a reason to play through it again.

Call of Pripyat was my first proper playthrough and i finished it multiple times before SoC so that might be the reason. I'll start downloading this immediately.

blagodarya bro.

Just finished my vanilla playthrough of all three games. What next?

The ultimate STALKER experience is CoC. If you say otherwise you can lick the salt off my nuts.

>My problem with the game is that being a hobo stalker is the best part of the game
My nigga.

That being said, with years of experience with lurkin' and postin' in Stalkan-threads, I've come to realize that people generally get divided into two groups:
-Those who love the rough start,
-Those who don't and didn't expect such learning curve.

For the latter, the ages old advise has been to play AT LEAST up until the 100rad Bar. Most players agree that is the spot where the game truly "begins".
For latter hoboists... just stick to worse gear? I actually started a jackets + double-barrels only run once with the old OL mod. Got all the way to the Army Warehouses, then just quit for some reason.

Attaboy.
A bit shame you finished CoP first, but eh, that's life.

I can't stress how much the game's version number matters in case of AMK1.4. If your game is not 1.0004 (best achieved with fresh installs of [pirated?] retail copies + manual patching), you can expect it to be one huge crash-o-matic. Even on right version, I do suggest making "hard saves" via the Main Menu's save game function from time to time, instead of just relying on the Quick Saves.

Did you get the TRUE end in SoC? If so, modding time!

CoC is just boring.
TFW 3.8 did the sandbox roaming thing way better, way earlier.

Begin your crippling depression knowing that there will be no more STALKER games...

who needs new games, when you got kazillion MODS to choose from? With new ones popping out like shrooms during rain, each year!

play Call of Misery for CoC, its main appeal is the prolonged hobo phase

I never liked gimping myself in games, but the frantic feeling of fighting off a group of bandits with a sawn-off shottie and a pistol just can't be replicated when I have an AK-102 with a grenade launcher, enough medkits to revive all of Clear Sky, and armor that can withstand quite a lot of impact.
I will say though, the TOZ-34 is the best gun in the damn game.
>accurate for an impressive range
>fucking stronk
>never jams
>kill a bandit with two quick shots and reload all in the spawn of 2-3 seconds
>ammo is mad plentiful
I should do a TOZ-34 run.

good job OP, you weren't a faggot today

Sup Forums is always right. remember that.

>I should do a TOZ-34 run.
That's pretty much what I did with OL all those years ago. Still got screenshots from the days as well.

the mod did also have a non-sawed off SxS shotgun, which I also used from time to time. Pretty much the same as Toz, but with slightly different stats. I did carry a handgun on me as well, but I limited my suit to just leather jackets and similar, while compensating with Artifacts.

anyone get a bug (with ZRP) where you do the fighting arena stuff and get teleported to the top of a building in the duty area?

was really weird, only workaround i found was using the teleport list to warp to one of the exits to the bar area and walk back

Nope, cant say I have even heard of such bug.
Then again, it's been ages since I visited the Arena.

CoC is endless power creep and once you're an exoskeleton gauss killing machine there's nothing left to do. Killing people serves no purpose other than hoarding more stuff.

>tfw we will never have such a huge STALKER boom as the summer 2008 again
young newfags can't recall it, but we had nonstop bump-limit hitting Stalker threads, day and night, for weeks if not months. Sometimes, multiple threads were up at once. People sharing greentext stories about their adventures, vets tutoring rookies, new mods were released and discussed all the time... magical.

This was before /vg/. Before Catalog. Before Captcha.

this is exactly the problem of CoC-style sandbox mods. And just about every other open world survival game that's not a STALKER title: you're "surviving" just for the sake of survival. There's no other goal, no plot to unravel, no main and sidequests. It ends up being a job, not an adventure.

The top 3 mod catalog of 2008:

>for rookies: Float32
>for PC enthusiasts: Complete 09
>for challenge / for the lulz addicts: Oblivion Lost 2

Honorable mention:
>for slavs: AMK 1.x

>STALKER's weapons are inaccurate!
>The enemies are bullet sponges!
reminder that these two claims mean "I am a huge casual" in the plebeian language.

>Xray engine will never get an open source reimplementation like Morrowind, X-Com or Thief, that fixes all the issues and improves modding

>you will never ever play the STALKER 2
>we will never get to make mods for the "X-Ray 2"

...

...

...

once i realized that i was using shit weapons and missing all the time, the game opened up and got twice as enjoyable

a proper rifle with a decent scope and suddenly guys with armor are dropping like flies

>when you get so good at sniping you know instinctively where to aim to get the kill
Is there a better feeling?

...

TO MAKE THIS PERFECTLY CLEAR

ALWAYS
PLAY
ON
M A S T E R
D I F F I C U L T Y

THIS IS *NOT* SOME "HARDER IS BETTER" MEME, THIS IS GAME MECHANICS FUNCTIONING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

That's exactly part of the trilogy's charm. The gear-based progression system is just so damn satisfying and simple. Yet in a pinch, any rusty peashooter can drop enemies with a shot or two to the head.

No. One reason I love ironsights and bullet physics. Latter which many rookies don't seem to realize to be implemented in STALKER games; the lack of tracers on all of your shots may just add to the confusion.

it's been a while...

...

'suckers are for succ, not fug

Then give me a TL;DR on what mods or updates to use if I've finally gotten to STALKER on my backlog faggot.

none just place it

Just go to Google and search for STALKER Starter Set. I got mine from Moddb

where the fuck did this come from?

I'm not falling for that, Bloodcyka.

When i was younger i visited my Cousins in Poland every summer. The breakdown of Communism was still around in every part of of the country, especially the buildings.

We left the house in the morning and just returned for having lunch, just to get out as soon as possible afterwards to go on another adventure until the Night came.
Exploring abandoned factories or Farms.

And all these feelings came back when Stalker was released and i saw the buildings and felt the atmosphere.

I miss those Summers....

Thank god Stalker 2 will never come out.

I'm getting 15-25 FPS in Shadow of Chernobyl, and that's in 720p, min-med settings, and no AA. What the fuck? I have a fucking i7 4790k, 16gb ram and a brand new Titan X Pascal...

I can't get past 30 FPS in a 2007 game... now imagine a poorly optimized 2017 engine, lol.

Works for me lol

Turn the settings up.
I wish I was kidding.
STALKER runs better at higher settings than lower settings.

a friend of mine is playing the lost alpha mod and wants to know how to reduce the knockback after being shot. he says it makes it impossible to aim for about 2 seconds, and he just gets killed because he cant shoot back. does anyone know how to fix this?

After playing CoP for so long, it feels good going back to SoC. My biggest problem with CoP is starting with a rifle and being able to find end-game equipment on the first map, the progression was completely fucked. I really feel bad for all the people who had it as their first STALKER game.

Don't get shot.

I gave up on SoC just after Condor. Then a year later I tried CoP and had a blast, it made me go back and play SoC all the way through. For this reason it will always be my favorite STALKER game.

Downloaded a fuckhueg pack for SOC and its the best pack ive found so far.
How can you boost your reputation with stalkers that you cant do jobs for i.e loners you rjust find? I had a squad of 4 breekis and now i want a stalker army to run the zone if its possible

>tfw I was spooked as fuck when I got to the wish granter

I don't know if it was might to be scary but it sure scared me

Believe it or not, I actually had 5-10 more FPS with my previous gtx 970.

I tried putting everything to max when I first started the game, since I thought my card could max it out. It was like a power point slideshow lol. Would only go up when looking at the ground, or up in the sky.

I used complete. It's dated now, but nothing really wrong with it back in the day outside of the wishgranter thing.

Last mod I used was the elite mod.

OP here. I've noticed that a lot of screenshots have the game vivid and colorful. Are those from Clear Sky or did I do something stupid when installing these Starter Kits? Mine looks great but looks kind of bland color wise, I suppose thats what its supposed to be for grim atmosphere and all?

>that picture
I just got back from my first side mission acquired in 100rad Bar and I must say, that image depicts my feelings perfectly.

well considering my computer from 5 years ago can run Soc, CoC and CoP at maximum, each with mods with 60+ fps

i have no idea what the fuck youre on about

you guys like the new lost alpha?

Speaking of stalker. I want to play CoP. Should I buy it on steam or should I pirate it? If the latter, from where?

I'm sure you can buy it for cheap off one of those alternative digital retailers.
