I'm re-playing it right now, it's loads of fun. Give it a shot OP

Yes, it's fun. Extremely flawed but fun.

Not the first game in the series to start with though. I recommend the original NES game or Super Castlevania IV first, then Akumajō Dracula X before this.

Yes you fucking retard.

>shit loading times
>boring level design
>unimaginative builds

If you're into pretentious pixel graphics and
>muh deep filawsufy
Too bad Sup Forumss favorite game is disgusting indie shit

>trying this hard

Yeah, OP. It's a timeless classic. I agree with the other user who said you should play some other Castlevanias too.

Castlevania III, and Bloodlines. Rondo of Blood is good to play before SOTN since the stories bleed together.

Yeah it's great.

>boring level design
>builds
>pretentious
>Sup Forums's favorite game
jfc if youre gonna bother to type it out at least try.

It's one of my favorite games of all time but I know I have some major nostalgia goggles for it. There's a reason it helped kick off what is one of the defining pillar genres of modern gaming, but if you play it for half an hour and dont really like the minute to minute gameplay i wouldn't bother.

>Dracula X before SOTN
Nah.

The first four Castlevania games are very different in style to SOTN, that'd be a jarring transition. SC IV is not metroidvania-style, it's just a standard (hard as fuck and very high quality) sidescrolling action game.

SOTN is in my opinion the best game in the series, but certainly the best that have the metroidvania style

What are its flaws?

play it just for ost
youtu.be/jaxVcPBBcg0

Anyone know what the best version to play is?

I one of the Sup Forums's cult classics, play it or die you fucking faggot.

Is there a point to lumping sotn with the rest of the castlevania franchise? Aside from thematic elements and references with enemies and shit its barely attached in terms of gameplay. Saying you should play the older games is like saying you should play FF 1-3 before you play the mmo.

It plays very slowly, it very badly paced, there are too many empty or with very little long corridors, some enemies are just hp sponges and often are north the xp to kill them.
The overall design of the map and flow of the game is very rough around the edges and clearly inferior to later Metroidvania games.

far too easy on the difficulty side for one

It's literally one of the greatest video games of all time.

this user did have one point in his bait that the OG PSX version's loading times are abysmal, but the PSP version or whatever the fuck doesnt have the original voice track which is kinda part of the charm. I'd say the 360 version or just emulate the original.

Sure but don't expect anything nearly as good as Super Metroid

see this one was better user. Keep refining it and you might actually hook a couple real (You)'s

Sometimes I wonder if there's a guy who devotes his whole day to baitpost Contrarian opinions. Yes OP, it's a pretty good game that has a lot of design flaws and bugs up its ass, but it's a classic absolutely worth overlooking those flaws

Even the cheesy voice acting has its charm, but that may be nostalgia.
Prepare for hours of fun

I don't know about "extremely." Elaborate.

What is a man?

A MISERABLE LITTLE PILE OF SECRETS

How's the Saturn port of it guys?

Just as good as Super Metroid but with a spooky mansion theme.
After you clear the map the castle flips upside down and you continue playing in an upside down castle

It was after sotn that all other CVs followed the same formula, thus the name 'metroidvania' came to birth.

So you could do like an old style CV, and the metroidvanias.

moonrunes get out

it's a really easy and broken game but still one of my favorites. it's beautiful, has terrific sound design, and has satisfying progression.

I believe it has some hidden content that no other version has, but I also heard it runs like total shit.

Maybe emulating it wouldn't be so bad though?

not good, you can play as maria though thats the only plus and theres a like 2 extra areas

yeah thats exactly my point. It seems silly to prioritize putting older games ahead in play order when really sotn and every game after could be considered a completely different franchise.

It has zero challenge at all unless you purposely handicap yourself, 95 percent of the game's inventory is useless, and the second half of the game is just the first half upside down (and without that second castle the game would be extremely short).

It still managed to be a great game with those shortcomings (and the huge amount of useless items can actually be in it's favor if you like hording, there are some unique one-off weapons you'll probably never use but have their own special effects as well).

It's insanely good. And I'm not saying this as a nostalgiashitter since I played it for the first time this year. Wish I played games like it instead of sports games on my PS1 back in the day.

>90% of everything you'll pick up is useless
>you'll forget you have subweapons a quarter into the game
>magic is overpowered and you have it from the start
>You can kill most every regular enemy before they even get to attack you or otherwise stun lock them.
>You'll end up exploring for no reason since everything you get is useless, seriously your inventory will be full of junk.

Aria of Sorrow is a better game.

A real SotN disc on a real PS1 had virtually no noticeable load times unless you glitched your way through the special hallways super fast. Menus only took a few seconds to load at worst.

?? Holmes i played it on ps1. Some of the loads werent bad but others were awful, and the menu was like hit or miss with freezing.

It's awesome.

Make sure to play Aria of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin if you like it, they're even better.

I'm currently on Aria of Sorrow since "discovering" this whole series not that long ago. The newer games are better but I wish it was more Dracula and less JRPG story wise. SOTN has such a great atmosphere.

>The game that SOTN is a direct sequel to
>"Nah."
ok

>dude you have to play Fallout 1 and 2 before 3

It's an improved Super Metroid.

They're the same franchise. Also, the older games were better.

>implying people who started with 3 aren't massive fags

I don't think it's extremely flawed. Your first playthrough will be fun because you don't know what the fuck you're doing, like any game. It's adequately challenging.

>SCIV
>hard as fuck

I will give you that it's very high quality though, dunno why that game gets so much hate despite being a pushover in difficulty.

Presentation is top notch but I lost interest when the castle flipped upside-down.

Already got summed up here

I liked it a lot the first time I played the game, but I tried replaying it a year later and I couldn't enjoy it as much. Anyways, the game is fine, it's got some pretty good sprite work and a sweet ass OST.

I say go for it, it's very easy when compared to other Castlevanias, but you'll probably have a nice time with it. At the very least, the music should stick with you.

>Akumajō Dracula X

Rondo of Blood and Dracula X are sorta different games, if you're talking about the ones on SNES then you're talking about the inferior game.

Either way classicvania titles are usually too hard for beginners, they have to go in knowing that the games aren't like the later entries.

Also 3>1>Rondo of Blood>IV>Dracula X>Bloodlines

>3
>best

mah nigga

Works fine on my machine.

If you for some reason decide to play 3 to get ready for the animated show coming to NF, play the japanese version instead (Akumajou Densetsu), it's much superior.

The pushover in difficulty is why some don't like it. The whip's versatility makes most sub-weapons redundant (no need for the axe anymore when you can just whip diagonally), and the game doesn't seriously try to kill you until the final few blocks.

Yes dumbass

I keep getting bored when I get to the reverse castle help

Pros
-Maria is super cool and has loads of shit that's not in the PSP version
-2 new areas
-A relic in one of those areas that lets alucard move faster

Cons
-Runs like dogshit.
-No really it's unplayable
-takes forever to load something as simple as the castle map
-frame drops all over the place
-backdashing is actually slower because it makes so much dust the game slows down.
-not even emulation can save you

>the easier version is superior
No

Reverse castle takes like an hour or so to clear since you know the way and are super over powered at that point.

It's not easier though?
There's more character actions and the soundtrack is better.
Why would you want to play the worse version?

>first time I played this was last year
>started from the morning and played in the whole fucking day, even got the best ending

I think it was the first time in forever that I simply sat down with a game and had so much fun with it. The best part was accidentally turning off the Cube of Zoe (I looked at the the item when I got it and I think I just hit off without realizing) and not knowing for three quarters of the game.

>shield rod + alucard shield
>crissaegrim easily available in the library

man that game has some of the most broken weapons in any game ever.

>this entire fucking thread
Nu-Sup Forums was a mistake.
Sup Forums should have died when Moot left, not turned into this post-ironic, rotting corpse.

To answer your question OP; the game is considered a classic for a fucking reason. I myself played it only last year for the first time and found it excellent.

I think the novelty of the saturn version alone makes me wanna get it, despite all its flaws. Damn I'm autistic, fuck it though

tcrf.net/Castlevania_III:_Dracula's_Curse/Regional_Differences

I don't feel like listing them all so read this, some major things though is that enemies flat out do more damage in non japanese releases and there are more enemies in more locations.

Nothing wrong with this thread, fartbreath.

No, never play it.

What are you talking about you retard? The whole thread is saying it's good but too easy, which is exactly right.

Uh you forgot cv3 in there.

Also OP play aria of sorrow on gba and all the ds ones. And the first los.

You can buy it on the ps store for ps3 or use your free trial of ps now if it is on there. Not sure though.

If you have a vita buy dracula x chronicles for 3 games in one drac x. Sotn and rondo. But its not the same as playing the psx version.

PSP has the most content, but it doesn't have the funny translation.
If you just want to play the game and don't care about memes it's the best version by far.
Too bad you need to unlock it first, but that's not too hard.

Well the bosses and finding draculas body parts in the 2nd half are pretty intagral to the game......even if you cheat to beat the bosses with shield rod and aluc shield.

but only if we're talkin' Akumajo Densetsu with that bitchin' VRC6 audio

youtube.com/watch?v=h2JWRJZwvJo

youtube.com/watch?v=GHG3e0bQe3I

What is THE BEST dracula fight and why is it Rondo of Blood?

Also pro tip before you start...look up to use the special spells of shields and weapons and fireball spell and alucards warp slash move. Shit like that isnt explained in game and these days there are no manuals for it so you qould never know how to do those moves. And the morph specials.

I feel both are good enough to play through. I played through and mastered the American version, then I just played through Jap version with ease while enjoying the new music.

Best Dracula fight is Rondo on the PSP.
He's got a whole nother form and you can't cheap him out with hydro storm.

Well aria is set in the year 2035.....so there is that reason kinda...

But yea i prefer gothic horror CV.... thats why lords of shadow 1 is good and 2 has major fucking flaws...i forced myself to finish 2 sonce i bought it on release day hoping playing as dracual would be even more fun tjan los 1 which i liked.

If I like early asstlevania but not metroid as much will this still be good or is it too different?

I love the level based ones on nes and snes/genesis

It's basically Metroid with skellingtons, so no.

It's very different, but you might still like it anyways.
There's a Richter mode after you finish it if you'd rather play it like an older castlevania, but there's no level seperation or anything like that.

>Richter mode
huh?
Some kind of ng+ or the same shit again?

Well I might be able to get over it but I dont care for the RPG aspects.

Can I ignore the RPG bits and just kill shit in cool scenery?

You would like dracula x psp/vita then and rondo.

You're just asking for it. Get out of this thread before someone spoils it for you.

>RPG aspects
You level up, equip shit and use items once on a while, that's as rpg as it's going to get.

Same map and enemies, but you play as the guy from Rondo and you have all kinds of streetfighter moves to get around.
There's no items, inventory, or leveling so it's very similar to the older games.
It's also a lot harder since you can't heal outside of beating a boss or saverooms.

>PSP has the most content, but it doesn't have the funny translation.

Factually wrong

The Dreamcast version of SOTN is the Definitive King of SOTN

youtube.com/watch?v=1NzAsBTxDjI

A NEW FUCKIN BOSSFIGHT

That fight is in the PSP version except she fights differently and actually uses moves she had in rondo.

>Some kind of ng+ or the same shit again?
when you start the game, (spoilers) you open to a prologue that takes place at the end of the last game. So you control richter at the final battle of the previous game.

if you input your name as "RICHTER" in the name screen, you start the game as Richter. he uses his normal subweapons and his item crashes, and even has some special dpad input moves.

>Can I ignore the RPG bits and just kill shit in cool scenery?

sort of. You don't have to level up or manage stats too hard, because you gain EXP naturally by killing stuff and occasionally a "level up!" pops up over your head.

But you collect items. its the nature of the game. you collect outfit items that affect your defense stats, and you collect weapons and consumable items that refill health or magic.

defense and attack stats are unavoidable. You level up and get stronger by also equipping new shit you find.

fir instance, this is your inventory screen for equippables. You equip a helmet, an armor, cape, a sword and a shield. (some weapons are two handed and take up both slots too, or you can dual wield. remember, you have 2 attack buttons)

I mean its honestly not that bad

>actually uses moves she had in rondo.

garbage. Adult Maria should fight completely differently than Child Maria

she grew up

Yeah that is pretty stupid; you should just play one and two and skip to New Vegas.

You fight maria in the psp version...

After reading most of it, I can't help but think that the JP release comes off as a better version, not to mention that its balance was how the devs intended it to be played.

Why would she forget all her animal summons that do fucking massive damage to everything in favor of kungfu shit she can't hit anyone with?

Of the 2D Castlevania games, Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night are the best ones in the series.

HMMMM

What's more cool

youtube.com/watch?v=oN_JhW5N0pQ
This

youtube.com/watch?v=6b9QKMfUQ-I
Or THIS?

Galamoth has very easy to break AI.
You can do the first with Richter in every version.

Since the fight is shit both ways I'll go with the PSP one since it runs in a stable framerate.

Glad you dont have to manage stats.
I dont really like the idea of changing equipment that much but it might be good I guess.

That second mode sounds cool as shit though

just try the game man. emulate it or something and if you dont like it stop.

It's shit
Play Hollow Knight instead

I was going to but now I know I can use the name to try the second one as well even if I dont like the first.
