Man this game is so bad, I don't get the critical reception of it.
Everything is so outdated and poorly done, only the combat is OKish but it gets old pretty fast. Japanese developers really need to step it up because they are far behind from the West.
I dislike Japanese storytelling. It's repetitive, it drags on forever with usually very little payoff. Or a payoff so convoluted and messy you lose interest in the story. I hate to be "that guy", but seriously, story-wise, undertale did so much more with so much less.

The combat is competent enough, and there's plenty of gameplay variety, as you'll switch sometimes to 2D mode, or a side scrolling shooter like R-Type, and then it goes twin stick shooter,
While there are some MMORPG tier quests that you fetch stuff here and there, there's also quite a variety of quests, like that one that makes you push boxes as in a Zelda puzzle
Many elements of the story/world are interesting, the differences between androids and machines, interaction between 9S and 2B and especially this whole hazy atmosphere, where you're not exactly sure what's going on and the underlying conspiracy themes were pretty gripping to me, I've stopped playing some games before the end recently but I couldn't put the controller down with Nier Automata, I wanted more of that world and all that shit.

Actually, there is, but it wouldn't be a problem at all if the performance matched the looks. And last gen gameplay is nothing but a compliment in my book.
