They were really unmemmorable.
I'd say 6 is also rather forgetful, specially after 4 and 5 with great people all around.

Game was enjoyable and if you played it at the right time in your life (when you were an overly emotional teenager) then it was really great.

Also it arguably has the best soundtrack

It's Irvine, the sniper you pick up at Galbadia who misses the shot on Ultimecia at the end of disc one.

There are good reasons for it with the story itself, but one of my problems with FF8 is that almost every party member who isn't Squall is stupid/incompetent at the worst possible time.

I was 10 when I first played FF8. It was my very first JRPG. I read enough of the flavor text in the ingame encyclopedia beforehand to understand where it came from, but I still thought the orphanage twist was stupid.

That's completely wrong though. Without Vaan the entire game ends when you get to the top of that big fucking tower and pick up the Nethicite McGuffin. The only truly useless character in 12 was Penelo, and that's because pretty much all her content was cut.

In all seriousness, this game would've been better if almost every character who wasn't Squall or Rinoa (you know the two worst characters in the whole franchise) weren't irrelevant after disc 2 to the game's plot.

The problem with Squall is that if he DIDN'T have the others there, the plot would be over in about ten hours, because those idiots just slow him down. Sure, he wouldn't progress as a character, but that's just a testament to the shoddy writing. Vagrant Story did the 'badass one many army MC with amnesia' much better, but to be fair, that came out after FF8.

You can really tell that Square spent about 1 year developing this. There are phenomenal parts to it (environments, the music, triple triad, etc), but the rest of it feels like a rush-job.

Also I think one of the more interesting ideas was "Who was in control, Sephiroth or Jenova. Hard to say because Jenova can easiably be compared to The Thing of all things"
