He's a plot device character. Both in the game and in all of the side material, the entire point of his various incarnations is that he goes crazy at the slightest provocation and does incredibly stupid grimdark things.

This premise is blithely retarded once, and you're expected to believe that the entire lore and background of the game comes from him repeatedly going crazy and people compensating for that in an incredibly contrived and stupid way basically forever.

I can't imagine who actually thinks he's well-written. Even Tarofags should have standards. Taro's had tons of characters going nuts for good and believable reasons to drive his plots. 9S feels like a clumsy satirical caricature of that.

The game doesn't provide the full context of 2B/9S's relationship. The side stories found in the world-guide and the concert transcript fills things in. Search for translations of 'Memory Cage' and 'Memory Thorn'. If the /vg/ thread is still alive, the sticky has links to all of the translated side material.

If you manage to read through it all you'll get context and insight not found in the game, such as the relevance of the JP Weight of the World Lyrics. It sucks that you have to go through supplemental material to get the full story, but Yoko Taro does this with all of his games.

Look, I bought into the hype and all those threads here.
I got the game, I played up to the Forest Kingdom, and yes the story mode is pretty much 10/10 in terms of settings, atmosphere, music etc

But
Why are the sidequests so bad? they are dragging down the game so much and it makes me lose interest.
Most of them are generic, go there kill x enemies, or pick that item
But I could forgive it...however, they also do stuff like "here is a red circle on the map now find that item" which would not be so bad exepct that something you can't find that item
There is literally a mission where you need to find a part, I spent like 20 minutes trying to find it and gave up and went back and then 9S says "we can't find it, let's talk to the operator" REALLY?
And then I spent 20 more minutes looking for the Yorha Betrayers, only to google it and find out the mission is glitched and can only be accessed later
There is also the matter of levels, why can I fight the Black Belt robot which is level 40 when I am only level 15?
Yes some would argue that they like this "challenge" but it's more of a bullet-sponge than anything, and the fact that knowing I can't do certain side quests now means I don't want to do them at all
It's a fucking pain to start a side quest only to find out you are not supposed to do it yet, this is a bad game design
