Depends.
Some games, mods or projects that tend to tribute their series can be alright, if they're well done.
I like those who prefer to acknowledge the history of a series to the point they even hit the most obscure parts.

Generally, I've found that mods and fan games ruin the originals though, but of course theres some good.
Theres a shit tonne of rom hacks for sonic on genesis. Some are great, some are worse.

It was up for a month when they done human and orcs but pulled it down for some dumb reason. Theyre working on the other two factions PLUS campaign, so expect to see it all in 9 years or so.

I'm playing throug Lecarde Chronicle 1. It's fucking amazing and I plan on doing the neitre classicevania serie (except rondo of blood because I already cleared it)
And then I'll play Lecarde 2 and replay the metroidvania.
LISA the pointless was also fantastic.
