Misery 2.1 is pretty good if you want an entirely new super hardcore experience.

Sup Forums hates it because they just dived right in, got killed a million times because they didn't read any of the manuals the game comes with (which are quite long and explain everything) and then fly into a rage any time they hear about it.

"hurr durr why didn't my pistol using normal bullets one shit kill guy in exoskeleton hurr durr?"

It's tough as shit, and sometimes unfair, but it's fun.

Also, you have Call of Chernobyl, which is really more of a sandbox experience which combines the environments and weapons of all 3 games, but doesn't really have a story. Just a few objectives and missions you can take from NPC's. It's pretty good for what it is.

You can combine both of them and download a mod called "Call of Misery", which is a misery mod for Call of Chernobyl. Can be fun.

Other than that, most mods, don't really change anything. They generally just change graphics or add weapons/change stats. Misery is the only mod I can think of that actually changes shit 180 degrees and is a completely different experience.

Vanilla is already very good, don't bother with too many mods on first playthrough, just get a bugfix patch or something and maybe up the graphics if you want to.

I've already played through vanilla SOC twice and COP 4 times. I'd like something different.

Misery is the worst fucking mod in the world

Enemies are abnormally proficient with weapons that technically should not be any better in their hands than yours, even with perfect aim.

Everything is lethal, like the regular game on the highest difficulties, but unlike the regular game, enemies are also bullet spongy.

Spacial threats are placed in areas to directly impede you, even indoors.

Enemy numbers skyrocket, which actually works against the pacing in some areas where measured threats allow adrenaline to rise and dip.

The economy is completely broken to the point where 15 sniper rifle roudns costs the same as a loaf of bread, and everything is far too expensive

Misery is literally an exercise in masochism. It doesn't add "difficulty" in a way that allows one to raise their skill, it adds artificial difficulty by increasing variables that just make shit take longer, in stead of forcing the player to grow and evolve.

I've been liking Radiophobia for SoC. It's a newer mod and adds nice looking guns, good gunplay and alters the story. I think it was based on an early build's story.
I unironically really liked ZoA, despite the stability issues. You could just play AMK autumn though.

For CoP, you could just go with a weapon mod and graphics pack. There's Misery (which everyone ITT is already talking about), there's pros and cons to it, but overall i guess i like it despite some pretty weird design choices, but i usually just tweak what i don't like. There's also SGM, one of the few mods, other than story mods, that adds a decent amount of new content to CoP. Go for Lost soul if you want somewhat better gunplay, and SGM geo if you want more quests.

Plenty more to talk about, but these are just a few.

Yeah, it is pretty bullshit. I left a comment on their latest 2.2 progress report regarding that.

It's stupid. 2 years ago it was like 98% complete, and even now they refuse to give out a release date.

I mean, what the fuck. At least tell us what year you plan on getting it done. No wonder people are pissed when you bring up their hopes and dash them constantly.

It's less that it's taking so long, and more that there really weren't many updates during that time.

If they made the update more ambitious, sure that's fine, but let people know. I guess you could go on forums but i doubt you'd get many concrete answers.
