3 to 8 are some of my favorite games ever.

Love it, I still replay VI and VII every 2 or 3 years.

I only played 6, 7, 8 and 9. 6 and 7 are my favorites, but 8 was comfy too. I hated 9 and Ubisoft's abomination Might and Magic X is terrible.

Same here. Is there anything that can compare to these games?

This

6 is the most playable game of all time for me, it's the first game I install on a new computer. Got the boyfriend playing it with me too.

The series as a whole is good, 9 was pretty shit and X was a huge disappointment, but before that it has almost nothing but great games.

I used to get really pumped up during character creation.

I absolutely love 6's completely messy art direction.

>CGI intro that is almost nothing like the rest of the game, neither in looks nor in content
>3D world with sprite objects and NPCs
>edited real images for player characters
>stock photos and images of the staff for NPC portraits
>painted images and touched up CGI models for items
>completely different looking CGI outro with random enemy models used during the celebration, including fucking CANNIBALS

I only played 2. I didn't like it much.

>Play MMVI with three friends as kids
>Each of us calls the shots for a single party member
>One on mouse, one on arrow keys, etc
>Start out getting into petty arguments all the time on what to do, by the endgame we are a cohesive unit

Honestly the best vidya experience I have ever had.

See you, cheapskate.

>Oh hallo! Schön dass du da bist!

The German vocie acting was amazingly bad in the best way possible.
Roderick sounded like a humungous faggot, Alexis like she didn't gave a shit, Serena had some massive orgasms whenever you identified something expensive and Zoltan sounded like a cynical prick.

Is there any other first-person RPG you play with several characters? I know of Wizardry 8, but couldn't really get into that (dunno why).

Not with free movement, no. All other blobbers are tile-based.

That sucks. I love the freedom in Might and Magic.

I never got why 6 is considered better than 7. Both are amazing though.

6 had a considerably larger dev time and it shows all over the place. Take monster sprites for example. Both games have 3 tiers of each creature with different colors. In VI, all of them are hand painted. In VII, about a half just has a monochrome filter slapped over them.

Bump.

Get these shit games outta here

Everything in the M&M series have been messy as hell. Fuck, even the franchise itself is a jargled mess. It's always set in a fantasy world but all of a sudden you get cyborgs, submarines, aliens and laser rifles from interdimensional gates and shit.

kys

That's only if you play with the patch

The difference in resolution between VI and VII make VII significantly better, especially in cluttered areas. Also VIs portraits looked stupid af and you could only be human. VI was horrendously balanced with melee being absolutely worthless.

Never played this but have been curious about it. What kind of series is this? Are all the games connected or different things? What's the best way to jump into this series?

Might and Magic 1-8 are connected. There are also excellent, turn based RTS games that you should try (Heroes of Might and Magic 1-4) who are connected to the RPG games' worlds.

>RTS

Meant to say strategy.

8 games continuing the story/plot? That sounds like it could be a pretty great story.

There are different plots for each game, but many of the characters feature in more than one game and they all take place in the same universe.

>turn based RTS
>turn based real time strategy
Apart from that, Heroes isn't even anywhere close to being an RTS.

See:

tomb of varn is the best dungeon ever made in a video game

What's the best way to start the series? Start at one and go in order? Or are there remakes/collections/remasters/etc to take into account?

youtube.com/watch?v=Jf-2LB5PLho

I would start with playing the Heroes of Might and Magic 2 campaign, then play Might and Magic 6, then Heroes of Might and Magic 3, then Might and Magic 7. That would make sense story wise.

I did not expect that order. Thanks. About how many hours of gaming am I looking at with those 4?

didnt HOMM IV shit on the entire setting?

also MOM X takes place in HOMM IV+ setting yeah?

The order is actually kinda crazy:
1, 2 and 3 are straight sequels, 4 seems to be disconnected at first but then ties in with 5 which on the other hand actually continues the plot of 3.
Same goes for 6 which then continues in 7 which ALSO continues the plot of 3 but from another perspective and also continues in 8. This confusion doesn't even include the Heroes games which also add to the story.

6 and 7 are already like 30-40 hours each.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 is a turn-based strategy game that takes place in the same land (Enroth) as the RPG game Might and Magic 6. The events in HoMM2 lead up to MM6. Then HoMM3 (again, strategy game) takes place after MM6 and the story of MM7 (RPG) takes place after HoMM3. The characters in HoMM2 and HoMM3 are connected to MM6 and MM7. I understand you're confused, but start with HoMM2 and it'll all make sense.

Let's say there are a lot of good reasons to dislike those titles.

M&M X felt like someone only read the TV Tropes pages of the older games so they can make pointless references to them for nostalgia brownie points, all while not knowing how and why the games actually worked.
I only played up to the golem boss of the elemental forge and felt like I hit a dead end since the game basically leaves no room for creativity and demands to be played like IT wants, not like YOU want.
I didn't have any earth defense spells, I couldn't level up anymore since the enemy numbers are fixed, I couldn't get any more money since the "work a week for chump change" backdoor that all the other titles had isn't in the game and I also couldn't go anywhere else since the game is railroaded as fuck.

Yeah, the entire world was destroyed and they took a portal to some other planet or something. Didn't really like Heroes 4.

So 1,2,3,4,5, HMM 1, HMM2, 6, HMM 3, 7, 8, 9? And don't play 10 or HMM 4?

Basically, but I'd rather play HoMM4 than MM9. And you can play HoMM4 after you've finished all the other games.

I keep trying to get myself to play the games but the art direction is eye cancer and I can't stomach it.

Same with Wizardry 8 for me.

Art direction grows on you, you can enjoy it the same way you enjoy a B movie about sharks.

I used to love them as a kid, but I'm afraid of replaying them in case I find out they were secretly shit

Spoiler: They weren't

this is the video I always think of, this combination of absurdity and sincerity

the actual might and magic games aren't that great, because modern conveniences, and rational stat design simply aren't present

i played 6 when i was young and my vivid memories of it include spending money to ride a horse around, seeing some kind of monster on the balcony of a house and it kept casting spells at me, and also seeing a troll under a bridge. did 6 have any of these?

I dont know why people like 6 so much, you still have to click on buttons instead of having hotkeys, and the art style terrifies me

the low color VGA stylization of 5 was much more appealing, and it still had the 'one block at a time' exploration method

this is a bit off topic, but 'arcana' on SNES was an above average might and magic clone, probably will feel a little more modern than the actual MM games

I remember skipping on the series due to the goofy 3D portraits (most likely devs or their relatives). Or was that another game? Either way, those still disgust me to this day.

What? 6 has hotkeys for everything.

7 > 6

Which are your favorite HoMM themes? These are mine:

That's like 700 hours of vidya right there I'm guessing.
