In my opinion, the real way to save the franchise would be pulling a Reach. Redesigning all the alien races to look more intimidating and completely alien.
Make Asari smaller and have an insect like appearance. Give Salarians four stubby legs and a more lizard like face and neck. Make Turians akin to elites by making them taller, give then an extra pair of arms at the front of their torsoes, give their mandibles a purpose and make their digigrade legs more of an alien dinosaur look. Quarians should be more cybernetic, bulky and cloaked in mystery, not space waifus.

A lot of people liked the Star Trek-esque space opera theme of the first game, and the electronic soundtrack that came along with it. When 2 came along and was more like a Michael Bay movie, it rubbed those people the wrong way.

Dead Space 3 sold really well, but that didn't stop EA form canceling the series even though the devs ended it on a cliffhanger.
